Nothing like a teenage daughter to keep you humbled…

I leaned into the culottes and polka dot trend this season and was delighted with this bargain in Sainsburys last week. I thought I looked great. Effortless and summery chic etc etc. Until 14yo DD looked up at me with withering disdain and asked why was I dressed like a Tombliboo.

We had a similar situation last year when I bought a striped teeshirt and they called me Bagpuss for the whole summer.

No matter how many times I read this is does not make sense at all!

I am glad to hear you have an extraordinary bush though ;)

That part cracked me up 😆

In fact all of your stories have made me laugh WAY too much.😆😆

Thank you all for them! {{HUGS}}

DontKillSteve · 19/07/2026 23:36

Had a fringe put in, felt very boho/60s- HeMan.
Cut said ‘do’ a bit shorter- Richard III.

You have obviously never watched In The Night Garden on cbeebies😂 The tombliboos live in a large bush and play with building blocks

My imagination was much more fun explaining it.

Maybe a large bush, but, is it extraordinary?

imtiredandiwanttogotobed · 19/07/2026 23:42

Tried on a swimming costume and teen DD said ‘you look like a slim person from the back’

chesterelly1 · 19/07/2026 23:45

My DD2 is brutal! I sent a yellow top back and in the reason for return box I wrote “daughter said I look like a fat banana”.
when she was about 8 I asked if she liked my outfit and she said “depends - will you be wearing it if you’re out with me?”.
blue and white striped top - Mr Smee
jeans and a grey sweatshirt - on remand
loads more that I’ve managed to block out.

Stressedoutmummyof3 · 19/07/2026 23:49

It doesn't seem to matter what I wear (maybe I have bad taste) DD2 nearly always says "are you wearing that when we go out?" with the look.
I brought myself a long coat with a tie and my eldest asked why I was wearing my dressing gown to work.

jenny38 · 19/07/2026 23:49

Wearing my new shorts on holiday, and a cap because its hot. Teen has called me Dora the Explorer all week. Has started shortening it to Dora, im worried I might be stuck with this name....

Stressedoutmummyof3 · 19/07/2026 23:51

Oh and my kids are always happy to say how grey my hair is and have I thought about dying it. I accept that I am going grey now but they've been telling me that since I was thirty.

pinkpony88 · 19/07/2026 23:51

This reminds me of a meltdown I had at 13 when my Dad thought he was going to parents evening in a burgundy turtleneck jumper. Seems ok now but at the time it was world ending 😆

SurvivalInstinctsOfABakedPotato · 19/07/2026 23:55

I can be a bit hippy, baggy tie dye trousers, band t and chunky cardis etc.
Had someone coming over from my work (which I dress very 'smart office') to view an item I was selling.

Son 14 asked how much I got for a gram these days and if dressing as swampy was what I was going for.
He looked mortified I wasn't going to change 'cos no one wants to buy from the dealers house'
Wouldn't mind but he speaks quite posh for where we live and made me question myself 😂🤦😂

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 19/07/2026 23:57

I have drawn a total blank on my kids ever dissing my outfit choices, though I am sure there re some.

But then, maybe not. After all, they have had to be seen in public with their Dad, as he wears a Hawaiian shirt, jorts, Adidas slide sandals and above the calf white athletic socks. They have known companioned humiliation and have coped. Pretty well. At least okay. Perhaps some therapy was needed....

Akitamum · 19/07/2026 23:58

I bought a red and black checked shirt that I thought I would wear open over a black vest t-shirt (reliving my youth😂) and my 19 year old DD said I looked like I was about to open a millennial burger joint whatever that means 🙄

Super worm 😂

lnsufficientFuns · Yesterday 00:16

Landfill cunts. Tell them to fuck off

mathanxiety · Yesterday 00:17

One particularly memorable conversation happened afrer I had bought myself a pair of dungarees. DD(14 at the time) asked where exactly I planned to be that day, and when, so our paths would never cross.

mylifeisexams · Yesterday 00:26

I am loving

counterculture supply teacher
John the Baptist
Soviet grandmother
super worm 😂
generic Pixar mum - genius!!

Teens are brutal and hilarious! My DD has said so many similar things I just can’t remember any of them right now!

Gentlework · Yesterday 00:27

I'm so impressed by the creativity of everyone's scathing teenagers! 🤣

Magicalthingsappear · Yesterday 00:28

Yes
I loved my fancy bottle of Tauer perfume . All my teens agreed it reminded them of something lovely like holidays but no one could place it until one day my son worked it out. "That’s it !" He said. "You smell just like the premier inn reception!"
😫

BananaSplitSundae · Yesterday 00:28

I put some mousse in my hair and back combed it a bit to style it nicely to go out and DD aged 6 asked why I had put on a Hagrid wig

You have obviously never watched In The Night Garden on cbeebies😂 The tombliboos live in a large bush and play with building blocks

I watched 5 minutes of it once, with my 20+ Yr old son

We agreed whoever wrote it was off their face at the time.

NoWinnersOnlyLosers · Yesterday 00:41

Bought myself a bodysuit with poppers in green with ruffles on top. My DH said I looked like a lettuce.

Bought myself a stripped blue and white maxi dress for summer, he said I looked like our bedding set.

My dd has form for saying I look like her grandma in what I wear.

Still, I don’t listen to them and wear what I like

DS said my new cashmere wrap looks great because it makes me look like John the Baptist.

This has made me laugh far more than it should!!!!

LadyWiddiothethird · Yesterday 00:44

Got new glasses,my son aged 48 said I looked like Ronnie Barker, good I said, because I have 4 pairs all the same.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · Yesterday 00:47

I gpt a black and white striped pants recently which I thought was cool.

My daughter took one look and said " beetlejuice, beetlejuice, beetlejuice!"

One time I was in the local pub wearing blue jeans and an open white shirt with a vest top inside feeling fab and a random leaned over to me and asked me was I just back from a Michael Bolton impersonation convention. Never wore that again.

HesterLeggatt · Yesterday 00:49

My child is non-verbal, with profound special needs including learning disabilities, so you’d think I’d be fairly safe from this sort of thing. You would be wrong. Was in M&S the other day, and I tried on a straw hat. He laughed so hard he almost passed out, then leaned over, took it off my head and dropped it disdainfully on the floor before trying to very firmly steer me away from the hat section. Harsh!
