Nothing like a teenage daughter to keep you humbled…

I leaned into the culottes and polka dot trend this season and was delighted with this bargain in Sainsburys last week. I thought I looked great. Effortless and summery chic etc etc. Until 14yo DD looked up at me with withering disdain and asked why was I dressed like a Tombliboo.

We had a similar situation last year when I bought a striped teeshirt and they called me Bagpuss for the whole summer.

Super worm! 😆😆😆 I can see how a long, pink puffa coat would look like a worm! Brilliant 😆

Callmecynical · 19/07/2026 21:38

I can no longer wear my favourite magenta coloured dress after DD’s observation “it’s bringing out your inner plum”! - brutal.

OhLaDiDaDiDa · 19/07/2026 21:38

I bought a gorgeous sage and cream striped T shirt to go with my sage jeans and cream jacket. Dd15 said I looked like a pistachio vanilla icecream. And then add, “oh and stripes mum? Just no.”

OneNaiceSnail · 19/07/2026 21:39

Last weekend I wore a new playsuit sort of thing that had a lovely blue and white swirly pattern. My dd told me I looked like a Wetherspoons plate 🫠

Mycatismad · 19/07/2026 21:40

I just get a no just no from DD, or sometimes it's just a look.

Gallusoldbesom · 19/07/2026 21:41

Yep, mine are the mistresses of the cutting put down. However as they’ve got older they’re quite keen on my French Connection, Reiss and Cos clothes and eye up my (few) nice handbags. Fortunately for me one is much bigger than me and one much smaller so my clothes and boots/shoes are safe!

MilkBreadToiletroll · 19/07/2026 21:42

In the interests of science, I clicked on the link before reading what your daughter had described you as. I got Tombliboo straight away too, sorry! 😆

Please, please, please op can you tell us all what this means? 🤣🤣🤣

You have obviously never watched In The Night Garden on cbeebies😂 The tombliboos live in a large bush and play with building blocks

TenThousandSpoons · 19/07/2026 21:44

I tried on a leather biker jacket and my dd said I looked like Gangster Granny

Dirtyrose · 19/07/2026 21:45

and spend all day in my extraordinary bush stacking my blocks

This means???

Oh it’s where the Tombliboos live and what they seemingly spend all day doing. If I’m to be a Tombliboo I’m giving it my all.

I've not watched Cbeebies since around 1986.

Was it after that?

Babyputyourpantson · 19/07/2026 21:46

I got a lovely mid length leather look mac from Tesco and tried it on with my black jeans and biker boots...DH said I looked like a Nazi officer...it went back..

SummerPeonies2026 · 19/07/2026 21:46

‘ I am not sure your tent like dresses are that flattering’

I thought my linen dresses were great until dd said that!

tooloololoo · 19/07/2026 21:46

Google In The Night Garden

Bunnycat101 · 19/07/2026 21:47

She’s not wrong though- the Tombliboo comparison made me giggle but also made me realise that kids who were watching in the night garden could now be quite old which in turn is making me feel quite old.

I also feel better ignoring my own daughter as she suggested she’d style me for an upcoming interview. She suggested Ugg boots and a playsuit 🤦‍♀️ so I feel no guilt discounting her advice for the next decade as she doesn’t yet have a clue.

@JamieOliverPetrolStation I need to know the context behind your username.

(outfit sounds really nice btw!)

It’s a CMAT song about her phobia of seeing Jamie Oliver on posters at petrol station delis. Jamie’s a good sport and appeared in the video.

If I had criticised my parents appearance in that tone back in the 1960s I would have expected a slap across the face.

About 2004 onwards, I think

There's a brilliant thread in classics about the gap between expectation and reality when it comes to clothes, something about Suzie Quattro's fat nan...

cupfinalchaos · 19/07/2026 21:48

I’m surprised they’ve even heard of Bagpuss? I used to get a little chuckle from dd when she disapproved. Having said that now she’s older, she’ll ask me what I think about something she’s bought.. and I realise she’s finally grown up!

IlovedLadybirdbooks · 19/07/2026 21:49

Caused Dd1 great embarrassment by looking at sparkly birkenstocks.

Ooh sparkly Birkies?! Off to Google 'em and buy some

wheredidtheteago · 19/07/2026 21:50

I bought (what I thought) was a stylish long lined blazer and got roasted by my mates all night who called me a peaky blinder 🤣

DS1 was born in 1999, DS2 in 2009.
ITNG arrived sometime between. DS2 was a big fan.
I don’t think there even was CBeebies with DS1?
