What songs do you find especially sad or moving?

Interested to hear thoughts…

For me there are two that are very personal:

• U2: with or without you - we played it at my dads funeral, I was 13 and he was 41, it has a lot of significance outside of being a sad song generally
• Joy Division: Love Will Tear Us Apart - similar to the above, and made more sad with the fact the lead singer hung aged 23

special mention to Queen - No One But You. A friend sang it in an am dram production recently and I’d never noticed how heartbreaking it was

just interested as could do with a good cry!

Though now I've looked up the lyrics of Puff the Magic Dragon and am so sad for Puff.

In My Life - The Beatles. Had it at my brothers funeral and always makes me cry. Beautiful lyrics.

The Rainbow Connection - The Muppets. Reminds of watching the show with my grandad. Happy tears.

Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) - Green Day.

Slipping Through my Fingers by ABBA. Reminds me of my DD (and youngest DC) leaving for uni knowing she’d probably not live at home again. Gets me every single time.

There are so many songs that hit differently depending on what memories you attach to them. For me, one that always gets me is Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah, there is something incredibly fragile about it. Also The Cinematic Orchestra - To Build A Home, that one feels like it captures love, loss and all the things you can't quite put into words. I think the songs that stay with us are often not necessarily the saddest ones, but the ones that become tied to a person or a moment in our lives.
