What songs do you find especially sad or moving?

Interested to hear thoughts…

For me there are two that are very personal:

  • U2: with or without you - we played it at my dads funeral, I was 13 and he was 41, it has a lot of significance outside of being a sad song generally
  • Joy Division: Love Will Tear Us Apart - similar to the above, and made more sad with the fact the lead singer hung aged 23

special mention to Queen - No One But You. A friend sang it in an am dram production recently and I’d never noticed how heartbreaking it was

just interested as could do with a good cry!

Landslide by Stevie Nicks. Especially when she sings it with Lindsay Buckingham

They used the cake song in the new Beetle juice movie. Doing my head in now as to what it's called or who sung it 🧐

Edited to say I googled and it's McArthur park by Richard Harris.

Edited

Donna Summer covered it in 1978.

There's a brilliant YouTube of Harris performing it live. Such a complex song too.

An old break up song of mine was Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime by the Korgis. I noticed one of my sons has it on his Spotify .....he had a break up last year. An eternal story I guess

Max Richter - On the Nature of Daylight 💛

Man of the World by Fleetwood Mac ( Peter Green)
Excerpt from a teenager opera by Keith West. It absolutely freaked me out when I was a child and can only listen to it now ( I’m 63!)

shea leaving home by the Beatles. When my dc were small it came on the radio and they were crying saying “it’s so sad mum!)

Vincent - Don McLean such beautiful words and raw, he really writes beautiful lyrics

there was a rumour for years that Killing Me Softly was written after seeing a performance of Don McLean, even if not true I can understand the reason why this song has been connected to him

My Baby (My Own) - Diana Ross she is singing about being left to hold the baby it’s beautifully simple in the message

Beautiful Boy - John Lennon

Strange Fruit especially by Billie Holiday

She’s Leaving Home - The Beatles

Puff The Magic Dragon makes me teary too

Annie I’m Not Your Daddy - it’s an upbeat song and I quite liked it though I knew the lyrics were cruel. It was on a playlist and ds said to me mummy this isn’t a nice song he was about 5 at the time and since then it makes me feel sad when I hear it

I think the most moving song I’ve ever heard is Angel by Sarah McLachlan. I played it a lot when my Dad died.
