What songs do you find especially sad or moving?

Interested to hear thoughts…

For me there are two that are very personal:

• U2: with or without you - we played it at my dads funeral, I was 13 and he was 41, it has a lot of significance outside of being a sad song generally
• Joy Division: Love Will Tear Us Apart - similar to the above, and made more sad with the fact the lead singer hung aged 23

special mention to Queen - No One But You. A friend sang it in an am dram production recently and I’d never noticed how heartbreaking it was

just interested as could do with a good cry!

They used the cake song in the new Beetle juice movie. Doing my head in now as to what it's called or who sung it 🧐

‘Sorry, love Daddy’ - Brian McFadden is the song that gets me.

Firework Night - New Model Army. The front mans eulogy for his lost brother in arms.
Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol played at a family members funeral, they were so so young.
Song to the Siren - The Mortal Coil. Heart achingly beautiful

Good shout for Cowboy Junkies, lots of their songs are tear jerkers. I had the good fortune to see them recently and the singer joked about how sad their songs are!

Romeo & Juliet by Dire Straits. I saw Mark Knopfler play it live and was definitely tearing up during it.

Bjork Come To Me from the Debut album. I listened to this on repeat when caring for my ex when he had a breakdown. We had split but I was still so in love with him.
I mean this is over 30 years ago but I would find it very difficult to listen to now. It is a very very beautiful song.

It’s Quiet Uptown from Hamilton. Every time I watch or listen to Hamilton I think, ‘This is the time I won’t cry!’ Reader, it never is.

I had managed to erase Puff the Magic Dragon from my traumatised brain but this thread has brought it all rushing back I’m sorry to say.

If you look up some of the lyrics to mmmbop by Hanson they’re actually really sad even if the tune is bouncy. Complete mismatch

Anything by Leonard Cohen.

Another one for Puff the Magic Dragon. I remember listening to that song one afternoon in primary school and crying when I imagined poor Puff waiting for Jackie Paper who never came back 😢

The Swan is very sad too imo.
