What songs do you find especially sad or moving?

Interested to hear thoughts…

For me there are two that are very personal:

• U2: with or without you - we played it at my dads funeral, I was 13 and he was 41, it has a lot of significance outside of being a sad song generally
• Joy Division: Love Will Tear Us Apart - similar to the above, and made more sad with the fact the lead singer hung aged 23

special mention to Queen - No One But You. A friend sang it in an am dram production recently and I’d never noticed how heartbreaking it was

just interested as could do with a good cry!

“Cats in the Cradle” - I grew up with and loved the Ugly Kid Joe version, but now I listen to it as an adult I find the story in the lyrics unbelievably depressing.

Abba - “The Winner takes it all” - I cannot get through that song without weeping, it is gutwrenching.

Elgar’s Enigma Variations the same - having watched so many Remembrance parades at the Cenotaph it is extremely moving.

ABBA- slipping though my fingers........if you have children😭

Another one for Puff. My son had an amazing imagination at a very young age. He had a community of imaginary friends who were generally with us. I hadn't thought about Puff for years and DS was around 15 when I heard it again and it broke me. Many of the other songs named above make me cry too.

Me neither. It chokes me up so much. Puff so lonely and the underlying message about children growing up and not believing in magic. Breaks my heart!

Oddly, I often tear up the first time I hear Fairytale of New York at Christmas. I do wonder if there’s some childhood trauma there!

Quite a few songs make me tearful. Music really gets under my skin. Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, Into my Arms by Nick Cave. I’ll stand by you, the Pretenders. I’m sure there’s loads more!

Streets of London by Ralph McTell always has me in bits. Always On My Mind by the Pet Shop Boys gets me too.

10,000 miles by Mary Chapin Carpenter. It was featured in ‘Fly Away Home’. All our family loves it and it links us together like a silken thread ❤️

I usually loathe anything by ABBA but dd's dance school did a show recently with this as one of their songs. Having listened to the lyrics, it seems even more poignant that I heard it in dd's last show as she will be going to university in September. 😥

Surprised nobody has said ‘Tears in heaven’ apparently the poor child’s mother would never listen to it. I don’t think there’s a sadder song out there.

Sam Stone - by John Prine, the line 'there's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes', is a just a devastating comment on addiction.

and Ships in The Harbour by Tommy Prine, written after his dad died,

'When I'm by peaceful waters, it gets harder and harder
I'd do anything just to talk to my father
But I guess he was leaving soon, as we do
Yeah, I guess he was passing through, and I am too'

just a very simple expression of loss.

At My Most Beautiful by REM. I don’t blink at Everybody Hurts but that one kills me.

What Sarah Said and Passenger Seat by Death Cab for Cutie. Also love I Will Follow You Into the Dark but I’ve listened to that so often it’s a bit less intense. (Am seeing them live in September ❤️)

Pink Bullets by The Shins. I wish he would EVER tour over here.

Ombra mai fu by Handel (the Largo). Problem there is I haven’t found the right recording, whereas -

Oh yes I actually thought first of Cranes in the Sky by Solange Knowles. My bereavement song.

Dreams by the Cranberries; Dolores’ voice was absolutely sublime and it’s a gorgeous sentiment. I always associate it with the Derry Girls too, and the time of the Troubles resonates with me as I have relations in Derry. Then I get sad about the loss of Dolores and how her poor young children must have felt. It does piss me off that it’s now been bastardised by a stupid car advert 😬.

The Queen "Made in Heaven" album. I listened to it when my Dad died.

If tomorrow never comes Ronan Keating.

Just typing that brought tears to my eyes, I called in Morrisons on the way home from seeing my mum in hospital, it came on the instore music. My brain knew instantly she wasn't going to make it but I didn't want to listen. I visited her the following day to find at that exact time she's had another heart attack and was told to prepare for the worse. 11 day later she died.
