What songs do you find especially sad or moving?

Interested to hear thoughts…

For me there are two that are very personal:

• U2: with or without you - we played it at my dads funeral, I was 13 and he was 41, it has a lot of significance outside of being a sad song generally
• Joy Division: Love Will Tear Us Apart - similar to the above, and made more sad with the fact the lead singer hung aged 23

special mention to Queen - No One But You. A friend sang it in an am dram production recently and I’d never noticed how heartbreaking it was

just interested as could do with a good cry!

The Scientist is now firmly linked to a death of a main character in Slow Horses for me (avoiding spoilers there). It rests somewhere between laughter and tears.

In the same way, Hugh Grant singing Killing Me Softly in About a Boy is laugh aloud funny, but brings a lump to my throat every time I watch it (which, as it’s my family’s choice of Christmas film is every year).

I chose it for my husband’s funeral, I wanted it to be a proper celebration of his life and it was, but now it’s my go to ‘feeling sad’ song.

We saw Bruce Springsteen at BST in Hyde Park and he'd just covered the song "Nightshift" on an album. I stood in a crowd of thousands and sobbed my heart out as my darling Dad had only died a few months before and it was the first time I'd really gone anywhere since he'd died. Still makes me cry whenever it comes on the radio. And he loved The Proms, I had a bit of a sob on Friday night listening to the 1st night... he always made me buy the programme and would ring me to say "are you listening to this". It's been 3 years and I don't think I'll ever get used to missing him.

These Days by Rudimental - a bit of a cathartic/emotional narrative anyway but this was the first song we realised our son liked beyond nursery rhymes etc. He is autistic and severely learning disabled, non-verbal but he just grooves. It's a bittersweet feeling listening to it when not with him but joyful when watching him 😊

The night will always win - Elbow. There's a live version of it in YouTube recorded at the Eden project (I think). Such a sad and beautiful tribute to his late friend.

The Killing of Georgie by Rod Stewart makes me cry every time I hear it. Listen to the lyrics and you’ll see what I mean.
