What songs do you find especially sad or moving?

Interested to hear thoughts…

For me there are two that are very personal:

• U2: with or without you - we played it at my dads funeral, I was 13 and he was 41, it has a lot of significance outside of being a sad song generally
• Joy Division: Love Will Tear Us Apart - similar to the above, and made more sad with the fact the lead singer hung aged 23

special mention to Queen - No One But You. A friend sang it in an am dram production recently and I’d never noticed how heartbreaking it was

just interested as could do with a good cry!

When we met the father giving the service a few days. beforehand, he asked if we wanted a song to play as we arrived and as dad’s coffin was brought in. We decided that no, we’d prefer the pianist just tinkling away.

I like to think my dad had other ideas. As my brother and I drove away from the meeting at the church, “These are the days of our lives” came on the radio as soon as we started the car. It was a surreal and beautiful moment and the song carries the biggest meaning of all now.

Fields of Gold, by Sting. I took my dad to see him at a beautiful open air venue just a year before he passed away. It was the most brilliant concert. When dad got sick he’d sit and listen to it and he’d cry quietly. It was very special for us.

Fast Car by Tracy Chapman. Just the sheer hopelessness of it.

I had a tear yesterday at Streets of Philadelphia. It came on, in the bar in Kos on holiday and I was explaining the film and the song to my daughters 😓

I'd lost my job, I had a family to support and it had all got to much - I cried on my then wife's shoulder when this was on. When it finished she then said 'enough of that, now go get a job'. It was probably meant at motivating but I was on my proverbial knees. I never opened up to her again.

Nimrod by Elgar - Rousing is a such poor adjective for that song.

Amazing Grace by The Scots Dragoon Guards (instrumental piece). The day my FIL died it was played on Pick of The Pops on Radio 2. I was making my way over to PIL house to join DH and the rest of the family and had to pull into a lay by for a week. FIL was a very good bagpiper and composed pieces too.

Don't Cry Daddy by Elvis. I was 13 when it was released, I heard it once and have never been able to listen to it again. The first bars of the intro and I have to skip to the next track

During Covid, I turned 40 and cancelled all my lovely plans and was thrown into work wearing PPE.
I saw some horrible things professionally (one thing in particular which stopped me in my tracks) and like everyone else, struggled with kids, husbands failing business, kids missing milestone events.

The kids primary school put a montage video together of all the children to the soundtrack of ‘My lighthouse’ and I remember their stunned faces as I started sobbing. I think it’s a Christian song and I’m not religious but it broke me.
