I think it is a terrible state of affairs, and if you don't mind, I wanna rant about it.
What the F do all these political scientists do all day ? How the F can they write papers and journals on politics, and be understood, when there are no international (so far as I am aware), commonly used and expressed definitions for what they are talking about.
Why can't they all just organise a conference or something and piss off for a while and produce an international guide for descriptive terms for political positions, herewith to be used by politicians and media. Invent some new words if need be, in multiple languages.
I would like to be able to read political news and see something like " NY Mayor Mamdani (E3S2) gave a speech today)"
Here the (E4S2) would mean something. E for economic position on an Overton scale, S for social position and whatever scale describes that.
Uncle Xi would be, President of "The PRC Xi (E1S9)" .
If they were to use something like that, people would instantly be able to see Mamdani is a 3 on the political Economic scale (mixed economy with some state-owned services), and a 2 on the Social rights scale, as in very much pro). Whereas Xi ( E1S9) would mean Economically all state owned, Socially - fuck human rights.
And the newspapers and political media could have a little standard footnote with the scales.
Honestly, when I read stuff such MN and I see, for example an LGBTQ activist described as "Far left", I shake my head. Because economically far left is communism. And trust me on this... there are no LGBTQ rights in communist countries.
Oh, and another thought. Under my idea for an ISO Standard : Describing political positions, politicians etc would ideally have to self-identify. So give Trump the standard (in optional picture format), and say to him "pick your position", and the press and the media will use that. And debate it of course.
BECAUSE IF THAT HAPPENED, AT LEAST WE WOULD KNOW THAT TRUMP HAD SEEN SOMETHING EXAPLAINING A THING HE APPEARS TO KNOW FUCK ALL ABOUT.
