I’m more than usually discombobulated today and am having difficulty forming my thoughts. Trump’s rant at NATO yesterday, though, and Rutter cosying up to him - is that the right way for world leaders to go, do we think? I understand the NATO members were relieved to have got this done (from the Grauniad): "The final summit declaration, signed off by Trump and 31 other alliance leaders, affirmed the countries’ “ironclad commitment” to article 5, which says that an attack on one Nato member is an attack on them all.” Although, I suppose, of course Trump would agree with it, as he wants to use it to get NATO to support the war he and Bibi started in Iran.

I absolutely think there's room for Good Cop Bad Cop when handling Trump.

It's embarrassing for the person who takes one for the team as Good Cop and has to oil Trump up.

But as long as this is a team effort by the Europeans, with as much unity as a herd of cats can ever achieve, then I think it can be an effective way to handle him.

The Good Cop role is a temporary one anyway, because sooner or later Trump will fall out with them over something – either because he crosses a line and they tell him No (Starmer and Meloni); or because he's throwing a tantrum about gravity acting downwards and someone's gonna get scapegoated regardless.

So then the Europeans have to wheel in a new Good Cop to supply him ego kibble. Working as a team makes this easier.

That's exactly what I thought. After going to Turkey where he claims they built a brand new airport terminal just for him, and he seems to think all new roads too etc, someone told him about the Iranian clerics wanting him dead. I think he honestly believed they were going to name things after him to glorify his name, not glorify his death.
