A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I feel like she may be in possession of information that is stressing her out... I accept I see everything as a conspiracy though. Well, I do now. Not so much in the past.

I think one of the very large drawbacks of SM is that it enables conspiracy theories to spread. Add this current government with its endless U-turns and playground politics into the mix, and life in general has become a perfect storm. It's not for the faint-hearted.

It seems to me people who take notice of current affairs and consider the possible scenarios arising from some very dubious policies need robust mental health combined with a well-developed sense of black humour. We're definitely living in "interesting times".

I must admit I haven't noticed much racism towards Kemi, maybe one or two posts that were deleted. I do remember one horrible one a while back. Hopefully the posters concerned are pulled up on the posts you describe? Racism, thinly veiled or not, should not be allowed to stand. There is far too much of it on MN.

I don't know if the posts are still there, and I don't want to read them again so won't be checking.
Obv can't TAAT so I won't say any more, but if you've read the same ones, they shouldn't be downplayed.

Not always.

Some are still standing.

That my observation as well.

I also won’t go into detail, but there was one breath taking remark the other day that’s still standing.

Did anyone report it? MNHQ can vary in its responses. Some posts they will delete, others they won't, even though the posts might be equally offensive.

Again, we can't TAAT.
No I haven't reported. Personally, I think its best to let them stand for all to see.

Burnham's team said to be furious at the £5bn black hole according to briefings given to journos.
Starmer showing his true colours again. Good riddance. I don't know how he can show his face at Nato.

Bit late to the party for this thread. And I'm days and days behind keeping up with politics. Many Labour supports seem to have taken Butler's lead as permission to treat Kemi with appalling racism. Not that it ever seems to slow her down but you'd think they'd rein it in just because it makes them look so dreadful. I do think it's best to leave those posts up, I don't see why those posters should be spared the shame.

Not that they feel any shame, or even agree it's racist.

No. Their teflon-coated, shame repellant rank hypocrisy is well practiced and something to behold, you are absolutely right. But their racist slurs against Kemi aren't any less racist because they are too ignorant to acknowledge it.

Nuthatch26 · 01/07/2026 16:50

I hope this isn't just lip service from Burnham. Fingers crossed he means it.
The Conservatives were planning to table an ammendment to close the loophole in the law.

Andy Burnham has demanded that ministers do everything possible to deport a Pakistani grooming gang ringleader who is due to be freed from prison on Thursday.

In a tweet on X, Mr Burnham, who is expected to succeed Sir Keir Starmer this month, said: “Like everyone, I want this vile criminal out of the country. Victims must come first. I will ask the Home and Foreign Secretaries to review all possible options – and they should consider nothing is off the table.”

Let's hope so. I do think Burnham will be better in this regard, compared to Starmer. Whether it's being less removed from the general population or if it is just that Burnham is far more politically astute, it's an effective way to signal a more human reflex to something that offends most people's sense of fairness.

I'm hopeful too. Burnham doesn't have a good track record on this topic locally, but he has a chance to rectify that as PM. Fingers crossed.

I suspect we will find he makes the right noises, but right noises, but doesn’t have the stomach or grit to unpick this mess.

From the article:

“neither has been deported to Pakistan after the pair, who were dual nationals, renounced their Pakistani citizenship to avoid being returned. Pakistan has, as yet, refused to take them back given they are no longer citizens, despite diplomatic requests by the UK.”

It’s hard to deport your own citizens.
It’s hard to deport criminals because their countries of origin won’t accept them back.

It would take some real will to sort out with a lot of folks on the sidelines wringing their hands.

Yes. I'm willing to put my PollyAnna hat on and suspend my disbelief for so long but if it just amounts to a puddle of words then I wouldn't be surprised.

...But then, I was that muggins who thought, well.. I wanted the Conservatives to win but maybe if Reeves grows the economy and Streeting improves the NHS, then we could reduce the welfare bill and things could be alright?..and I held my breath till the first autumn budget when all hope was lost

Yeah, I know. Probably wishful thinking on my part.
Burnham will know that this will be a big issue in the mayoral by election. The Restore candidate is the Dad of one of the victims.

They need to aclimatise!

Kick off time is 1am Monday morning. Not ideal.

When I think of the people he hit with stress him missing out on major sporting events is a bonus.
