A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

It makes my angry how Labour have made people feel this way. We had that same feeling of 'what's the effing point' when the business went under.
Discussion around how to keep money and assets away from the govt's reach are commonplace since Labour got in amongst people I know.

I'm an accountant. Honestly never been so busy with clients wanting meeting to discuss exit strategies, winding down, early retirement, IHT planning, etc. Working people have had enough and are actively planning to step off the treadmill, stop paying taxes, stop employing people, stop working, etc. I've been an accountant for 43 years and it's never been this bad. Can't remember the last meeting with anyone actually wanting to start or grow a business - must be last year, whereas most of my working life I've been working with new and growing businesses on a daily basis. The country is utterly screwed.

Andy’s not interested in AI….Well, AI’s interested in our Andy, whether he would wish it, or not.

Must admit - I am looking forward to this joker becoming PM. Especially when he has to open his mouth to defend policy etc.

No wonder he wants to avoid Westminster, because Kemi is going to tear him apart.

There's no suggestion at all of PMQT being moved to Manchester, so Kemi will continue to have her chance every Wednesday at 12.30 in Westminster.

I don’t have an issue with devolving powers to the regions in principle. I guess the issue is are they planning on cutting budgets in the central government departments (education, health, etc) to get more money out to regions or are they talking about yet more taxes?

@Ereshkigalangcleg I’m hoping that the aide RS spoke to was speaking out of turn and that there will be a proper engagement with AI. However with Ed M looking most likely to be moving into No11, can we really see him abandoning his net Zero principles to give tax breaks to companies wanting to build data centres that will be needed to make the U.K. an AI hub?

I don’t have an objection of principle either. And I think all would accept that local services and other things like local roads and planning have to be administered locally.

But IMO we should be limiting local government not expanding it. There are any number of rotten boroughs, run by all the parties and by independents, and a great deal of waste.

In the end I’m sure that central government wouldn’t shrink but local government would grow. We have more than enough elected posts and public sector already. We don’t need more tiers of it.

Of course, if we could do all this more cheaply and efficiently by pushing money and duties downwards, great. But I can’t see that happening.

I should add that the Tories went in for some of this and I always thought they were wrong to do that too.

He’s probably worried about getting his phone stolen in Khan’s lawless London /seems particularly to affect high ranking Labour types.

We are heading towards a UK socialist republic.

You will own nothing and be happy.

They are all WEF trained.

Its very concerning.

That seems to lead to being involved in an investigation for Labour.

I can believe it, my accountant said the same. You only have to read a few posts on MN to see that so many don't understand the impact this will have on our economy.

There are rumours abound that Olly Robbins is in early talks for a return. Suggestion that he could be appointed as national security advisor or similar when Burnham takes the reins.

Take that Starmer 😁

Yeh, it worked out as I wanted 😀

Olly back and bollard out. Happy days!

I doubt that Badenoch will savage Burnham at PMQs. Her improvement at the despatch box is partly her getting to grips with it but mainly that Starmer gave her so many opportunities to attack and ridicule him. Burnham will be a harder target for a while at least.

I don’t think it would be tactically good to lay into him from the start anyway. If I were an adviser to Badenoch I’d tell her to start soft, including an offer to work with him to make the necessary cuts, reduce tax and create growth. That would piss off the Labour backbenches.

Once Burnham has a track record Badenoch can start kicking him.

Spot on. 🎯

There will not be any London & SE to tax, soon.

Billionaire Michael Platt’s BlueCrest Capital has warned the UK is “no longer a serious contender” as a place to do business after losing a £200mn legal battle with tax authorities.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday unanimously dismissed an appeal by the investment firm, which had been battling HMRC’s attempts to tax its partners as employees since 2022.

The appeal centred on the interpretation of legislation on the taxation of salaried members and its application to some members of BlueCrest Capital Management, which was formed as a limited liability partnership in 2009.

Goodness some really get rattled by Kemi don’t they, is it that her success makes them feel worse.

Good on her for taking up their headspace so much.

Bullandbear · 01/07/2026 12:12

Looks like Burnham’s new chancellor is confirmed.

I mean, he has the same qualifications for the role as the incumbent.

I said the same on this thread about an accountant who I met at a local networking group

She specifically said that a lot of people really are leaving the country

But as I was wondering when I was up north last week and I saw so many shuttered shops and businesses ... I was chatting to a local lady about this and I said "what happened to all these business owners? What will they do now?"

And I realise she may not have had a free conversation with the total stranger 😂 but she got very serious and she said "I honestly don't know"

that is something I genuinely wonder. From other conversations I've had at local networking, I get the impression that anyone with money is going to be running down their savings but what happens at the end of that?

And I often talk about the sense of hopelessness there seems to be around, which is now coupled with the sense of nobody wanting to do their job properly, and while it's difficult, I kind of don't blame them

So where do we end up? What happens next?

The strain on Reeves is etched on her face; if the bags under her eyes are anything to go by, she's very short on sleep.

I feel like she may be in possession of information that is stressing her out... I accept I see everything as a conspiracy though. Well, I do now. Not so much in the past.

I must admit I haven't noticed much racism towards Kemi, maybe one or two posts that were deleted. I do remember one horrible one a while back. Hopefully the posters concerned are pulled up on the posts you describe? Racism, thinly veiled or not, should not be allowed to stand. There is far too much of it on MN.

A 100% correlation to her being short on any policies for growth, then.

Ditto for her remaining tenure as chancellor.
