A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour* *government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Thanks @Nuthatch26! Good timing for a fresh new thread. Can't begin to guess how this one will end.

I expect the fall out from makerfield will fill this thread up!

Placemarking. Thanks @Nuthatch26

You are all wrong.

The perfect Christmas double is the Sound of Music in the afternoon with some chocolates, and Con Air in the evening with some more booze.

We have to leave some space for visitors and for those who keep posting here by mistake.

Hello!

I am away on my own - which I hate

I may be posting more than usual! In the evenings anyway

Hello 👋

Are you on holiday, or away with work? I'll be up late tonight anyway, for polls closing. Well late for me anyway. 😂

Thanks once again @Nuthatch26 .

I'll probably watch a bit of news post by election. Wonder what the turn out is like.

@Nuthatch26 I'm away for holiday

Only up north - haven't had to go far

I don't venture very far!

It was a bit last-minute, because I just felt like the flat was closing in on me and I don't have any work next week - and mum
seems to be okay at the moment which is unusual

I'm supposed to leave on Tuesday and I was quite keen to stay here longer to avoid the heat wave that's allegedly coming - but it's unlikely I'll stick it out on my own for that long!

In one of these weird hotels, that's a mix of incredibly shabby and okay it's quite cheap and I've got like a kitchen area

So we'll see how it goes.

I will probably go to bed early tonight, because I'm always anxious before I go away, so I didn't sleep much

I think we're expecting the election result between 2 am and 5 am, I'm quite often up at 2 am but probably not tonight!

Nuthatch26 · 18/06/2026 16:43

@SapphireCasino
I hope you enjoy it, a change is as good as a rest as the saying goes. Get some nice food/drinks and enjoy a change of scenery. You might feel better once you've caught up on sleep.

I do love me some Con Air. It's one of those few movies - Raising Arizona is the other one I can think of - where Nicolas Cage is probably the least hammy actor on the screen.

DancingFerret · 18/06/2026 18:53

Thank you @Nuthatch26.

Not sure what to make of the incident with the yacht, not least because the wife said they'd altered course by two degrees to avoid a collision with the Russian vessel.

The recommended change of course is between 15 and 20 degrees; two degrees over a short distance is negligible. I'm not defending the Russians because I wasn't there, but I do wonder if the Russians weren't firing guns in the air to attract the yacht's attention.

Thanks for that. I mentioned this yesterday, was hoping to get your opinion on it. Perhaps the couple on the yacht were a bit scatterbrained, and/or Russia tit-for-tat after the very conveniently timed seizure of a black fleet vessel (straight after Healey and Carns resigned). Hmmm.

In her account of the incident, the wife stated the warship had sounded its horn five times. My take on that is whoever was on the bridge was concerned about a possible collision. (Five blasts from a ship's horn would make most sailors sit up and take notice.)

(Going back briefly to the number of degrees to alter course, two is ridiculous and meaningless. We work on 60 degrees to make sure the other vessel can see we've changed course.)

She then went on to state they were under sail and therefore had right of way under maritime law. This is a common misconception. There are situations when power must take precedence, especially in relation to large vessels. The wife seems to have a limited grasp of the COLREGS and doesn't seem to understand maritime law.

Unfortunately for this couple, they've become the subject of quite a few cartoons doing the rounds.

Sounds like shooting at them may have been the only way to get them to fucking shift! 😬

I despair at some of the sailors in our marina. Deep pockets and scant knowledge. We've towed in our share over the years.
