It's a bit nuts that 20-45% (soon to be 30-50%) of rent goes directly to the government - that being the tax just due to rental, ie on top of the tax paid to buy the house for either a house-owner or landlord.
Kind of 30-50% of the profit, but given that mortgage can't be offset, it's not far off the whole rent.
...and yet people somehow blame landlords for high housing costs rather than the government.
I think most people simply don't realise how many slices upon slices the government take.
