In yesterday’s Political Currency they said that apparently Starmer looked into changing the rules on what ex-PMs are entitled to on leaving office - the security, pension, stipend, etc. He wanted to make it that you needed to be in position for 2 years before you got everything. He decided against it in the end but the irony is if he had gone through with it he would have only just qualified for it himself.

As an aside, I didn’t know that it was Thatcher who introduced the stipend after being told that Harold Wilson was effectively broke.

The Cenotaph will be quite a sight in November with 9 ex PMs lined up next to Burnham!

Isn't what ed is proposing black mail ? Can he toy with the nations assets and finances for personal reasons and personal gain? Do want a character like this as chancellor ?

Without speculating too much they thought the wording suggested that the terrorism offences may be separate - ie they found unrelated stuff whilst searching the property.

@CaveMum I read that the suspect had communist literature at his home and also he was not on Prevent’s list.

Obviously there’s no reason why the suspect would be on Prevent’s list unless he had previously aroused suspicion, but as a matter of interest, does Prevent concentrate on right wing extremism or does it treat left and right extremists equally?

Just had a look, they will cover it but it relies on someone making a referral. So the alleged suspect could have gone under the radar.

He’s a well known misogynist, as is his boyfriend, “Sophie Molly” who has also threatened violence against women he doesn’t agree with.

Has anyone seen this? People on benefits - as well as those with disabilities which mean they get water discounts - are exempt from the hosepipe bans

One of the water companies claims that it's to keep things simple, so that those with disabilities needing high water use aren't stopped from using the water they need.

I wonder how many of them actually need a hosepipe...?

You'd have thought individual exemptions would be more suitable, especially since those at high risk are already individually known to the water companies in case of water outages.

Agree 100%. It's been a dire 20 years with a succession of incompetent governments/ministers/prime ministers/chancellors who've completely failed to deal with all the challenges faced by the events you mention. And yes, people have been pushed to their limits. It's why people voted for UKIP/Brexit/Reform as a clear two fingers to the main political parties who've simply not had the interests of the British people at heart. Of course, it's the wrong thing to do, but unless the main parties get their acts together, things will just get worse. And the crowning of Burnham as PM just illustrates how out of the touch the political elite are. Surely out of several hundred MPs, Labour could have found one competent enough to be PM without having to parachute Burnham in. It's a sad state of affairs that Labour couldn't find an MP who was PM material without bringing in an outsider! So now we have a second PM in succession who became PM without recent experience nor a plan to govern - it's starting from ground zero a second time, and we all saw how it failed miserably the first time when Starmer/Reeves took office and hadn't a clue what to do!

It should be difficult to get an exemption, or no fucker is going to bother following them.

The water companies have already said they don’t bother fining in most cases, it’s entirely up to the goodwill of people whether they adhere to the ban, or the spirit of the ban. And people already hate them. So it stands to reason that giving a free pass to some people to put the sprinklers on and fill their hot tubs isn’t going to be conducive to other people doing their bit.

Just benefits to be exempt? The need isn’t there

The Water companies concerned are privately owned, so can do what they wish. Perhaps a good argument for renationalisation so there is consistency in policy across the UK?

There was a thread the other day and lots of people proudly declared they would ignore hosepipe bans.

If it was nationalised, they would double up in the 2 tier nature, and additionally tell us we were the evil ones for actually paying for the water and that's why we're not allowed to use it - so that more worthy people on benefits could..

Most of the expense in the water supply and disposal industry is in sewage treatment. ’Renationalising sewage’ is a bit less catchy though.

We are doomed to repeat the past it seems, or at least for some to argue for its repeat. How short memories must be if they can’t recall the appalling state of the nationalised water and sewage industry.

Thames Water is the most incompetent company I have ever dealt with and there are many. I was told by a call centre person there that my house didn’t exist on their maps which are based on 1970s maps. My house was built in 1885.. and has had water coming out of the taps for many years. Then I was asked if my house was near a ‘canal’ they could see on the map. Its not a canal its the feckin’ River ….Thames😂
Couldn’t barely understand the accent of the call centre people /obviously outsourced to India. I have been asking them for 6 months to send me a bill for the water meter they installed in January they have no record of that…. Sheer utter incompetence /no wonder they are broke. Nationalizing it will make it no better though.

Of course. Labour are strong advocates of two tier policies.

Aparently as we don’t exist they can’t install a meter
But despite not existing we are using water

What dairy? No cows here and no dairy. Two years to prove that a building they said existed didn't actually exist
