A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Does standing down wipe the slate clean of the £5m allegations? I don’t understand. Is this just a flex to show that he can win elections?

justasking111 · 07/07/2026 17:17

Thè people who hate Kemi will vote Farage
The people who hate Starmer/Burnham will vote Farage. It's a by election a very strange beast.

This is what I don't get. If he's found to have done some financial wrongdoing, then how will a by-election help?

Presumably he wants the by-election to happen before the investigation concludes.
Then if he is found to have done wrong, he'll be suspended, then a recall petition, then another by election. Its mad.
Lowe has said that he won't stand a candidate in the first by-election, but will in the second one.

RockaLock · 07/07/2026 17:36

I think the point of the by-election is that he believes he has done nothing wrong - according to him it was a personal gift, with no strings attached, and not a political donation - and so if he is reelected it sort of proves his point, and shows that the voters in Clacton are not bothered by the allegations, and just care about his politics and are supportive of him.

Good job they're paying for the first one then!

What a fucking waste of time. I think Lowe is sensible with that tactic. Nobody wants Groundhog Day!

Yeah I know.

Reeves has said he can't pay for it I think, just heard something on the radio.

@Nuthatch26 I was actually wondering what the rules are

I feel like it would be much more sensible to have rules for calling a by election in the first place

I was baffled when Theresa May called that random. This seems really pointless.

It will be linked to his disruption strategy and a quick look on social media shows that some people are in favour of it but I remain unsure what point it's making.

be interesting to know what the people of Clacton think - though obviously I've got a while to wait for that!

Nuthatch26 · 07/07/2026 18:02

Both Labour and Reform forcing unnecessary by-elections now. Two for Labour, two for Reform, costing millions.
Kemi can take the high ground. 😇

Unfortunately for the people of Clacton, even if they're forgiving of Farage and his financial dealings, if he's found to have broken the rules then he will have to face the consequences.

It seems like this entire charade is an ego-stroking exercise by him.

I do wish he'd just get out of our politics and stop agitating for trouble.

I agree. There should be a bloody good reason to call a by-election. Both Labour and Reform are doing it for vanity purposes, and making a mockery of our democracy.
Some will buy into the David and Goliath scenario that Farage is trying to create. I wouldn't be surprised if he wins.

Conservatives not standing - DT live feed

Mrs Badenoch said: “We will be standing a candidate in the real by-election, which will follow the standards investigation into Nigel Farage’s fishy finances.“We will not be standing a candidate in the fake by-election that Farage is causing to distract people from what is happening. We need to let that investigation run its course, and I think the reason why Nigel Farage has resigned is because he’s terrified that he’s going to be found to have done something wrong.”

Good on Kemi! I do think it's the sensible move.

Nuthatch26 · 07/07/2026 18:16

Nothing from Labour yet. Lid Dems have also said no.
Could be Nige vs Binface 😂😂

More from Kemi from The Times live feed:-

“We will not be standing a candidate in the fake by-election that Farage is causing to distract people from what is happening.
“The best thing for him to have done would have been to call a press conference and explain what he did with the money, apologise if needs be, and that would have been the end of it. Instead, he has been running away from scrutiny. No one is bigger than parliament. We all have to register our interests.
“We, the Conservative Party, are very focused on uniting the country around sensible policies.”

Haha 😂

I would love to see Binface in parliament. I heard him do a piece on Times Radio. He's quiet posh and very articulate and intelligent. Not sure what I was expecting, but I was impressed by him.

Sounds like he has more going for him than the majority of Labour's motley crew of MPs!

Yep. How about whipping against a privileges committee. Pot kettle bollard.

Pot kettle bollard.

Brilliant.

He’s a former trader.

I think it’s an inspired move.

Farage v Count Binface doesn't seem like an inspired move to me. Farage has misjudged the outcome of his "hissy fit" (courtesy of Kemi) by several country miles.

I can't bear listening to Nigel Farage in the same way. I can't bear listening to Keir Starmer or Donald Trump. (not having a lot a lot with politicians and their voices at the moment).

What exactly did he say that people found so striking? I'm sure there'll be a transcript available at some point, but I can't find it yet.

I'm hearing a lot of points about corruption and the way in which these investigations are weaponised. I can totally believe it, but I'm not sure how calling a by-election solves anything. In fact it doesn't, it's just part of the disruptor playbook.

it will probably end up being a gift to Restore. Matt Goodwin is talking openly about 4D chess. It's the 4D chess that I'm really sick of.

if it was going on and just better hidden in the past, that makes me even more nostalgic for the past frankly!

meanwhile, I continue to be concerned about things like crumbling infrastructure and the general lack of motivation, coupled with complete lack of efficiency, that seems to ripple out from politics into workplaces.

Nope. She's showing Farage up for what he is, and refusing to play his games.
