Cancelled holiday due to lack of internet

Rainingcatsandog · 27/06/2026 14:19

We were due to go to the Highlands today for a week. The holiday company informed us that the internet isn't working due to a general issue on the area and they don't know when it will be fixed. I was offered £75 off or the chance to change the date .I took the latter.
I'm now feeling annoyed as I think we should have been offered a full refund.
Does anyone know my rights?

I haven’t said I’m being forced to go on the internet. I just want to be able to go out without my phone but can’t in case the carers need to get hold of me. It’s not a difficult concept to grasp. Please ask someone if you’re struggling.

Sure but you can keep your carers phone number active so they can contact you without being online 24/7. Why is being on the internet necessary? I don’t get this at all

People are saying they hope the internet isn’t working and we are simply saying you don’t have to be online is all. I don’t see what’s so impossible about that 🤷🏻‍♀️

It’s hardly intrusive to have a phone in your bag or pocket and not take it out unless it rings, surely?

Do you struggle with comprehension? I said ‘I want to be able to go out without my phone’

Without your phone you wouldn’t be able to leave the house then. Surely carrying the phone is less of an inconvenience? (But has zero to do with the subject of the thread)
Edit: and you have that option. Smash the phone. Never leave the house. Phone carrying problem solved.

What a horrible thing to say to a poster whose mother is very frail, when what she would clearly like is that her mum was well and she could relax without worrying about an emergency.

SheilaFentiman · 29/06/2026 22:52

This thread has got and stayed way off topic and I’m out.

Good grief - I’ve expressed that I would rather be without my phone when I go out, but I’m currently unable to do that as I need to be contactable, hence I need to keep my phone with me. That’s all. Do you all work for the mobile phone marketing board or something?

No, it wasn’t horrible. I completely understand because I’ve been there. What I didn’t do was moan that I had to carry a tiny device with me rather than stay in the house all the time. Especially when poeple were talking about other uses of the technology that phones have. This thread isn’t about phone calls, it’s about internet use. Whether t(e OP needs internet or not is irrelevant to the question if being contactable in the situation here.

no, I just don’t understand why you would moan about something that makes your life easier in a difficult situation. Especially on a thread about internet use. Your problem isn’t internet related.

As someone with businesses, staff, contracts to run… not everyone can spend any amount of time not being in contact with the world!

OP: are you suited to holidays in remote / rural areas?

Loving the patronising by someone who hasn’t bothered to RTFT or the OP’s updates and seen that they have stayed here before. Confused

Do you read before you post? I’ve already said mum’s carers communicate with me and one another via WhatsApp and messenger. That’s via the internet. I just want - for once - to not have to have my phone with me and be contactable every moment of the day.

You don’t understand why I’m ‘moaning’ (about a perfectly understandable opinion). I don’t understand why you feel the need to berate someone for expressing that opinion. It’s bizarre.

Both WhatsApp and messenger also operate on mobile data.

Yes, but the discussion is about whether WiFi is essential.

I get it . Doomscrolling is a hobby like all the others. I would say out of all the thinks people do to relax - eat, drink, smoke , gym it’s the one that most unsociable and least benefits from being away from home.

What is it about then? If it’s not essential why didn’t you just go on holiday without it? You were asking if you were unreasonable to want a complete refund for a holiday because it wasn’t available.
Don’t bother answering. I’m out.

Some of us would and do. Wild camping with no heating or running water. Pure bliss.

This is my idea of punishment 😂

Could totally manage a couple of weeks without internet, though. I know how to read.

I think you are making a few assumptions here. There are other activities which people can use the internet for, and everyone is not in the same position in life. Yes for some people, they work long hours, and weekends are a rush of chores and activities and a holiday is a time to slow down and reconnect- but this isn’t everyone’s life. It’s certainly not mine.
