Cancelled holiday due to lack of internet

Rainingcatsandog · 27/06/2026 14:19

We were due to go to the Highlands today for a week. The holiday company informed us that the internet isn't working due to a general issue on the area and they don't know when it will be fixed. I was offered £75 off or the chance to change the date .I took the latter.
I'm now feeling annoyed as I think we should have been offered a full refund.
Does anyone know my rights?

Your’e not very good at this @PintofFizz😆😆

That's because I'm not an AI bot like you MeatyMessi 😴

OP, if the place was advertised as having wifi then its perfectly fine for you to cancel if there are no wifi. What if you booked it intending to work? That would be totally unacceptable.

Would you say the same if there was a power outage for a week, owing to a storm for example?

Insurance policies don't tend to cover 'acts of God'.

Because a lot of us do a lot of stuff with the Internet

Film on in the evening
Keeping an eye of spending
Checking information
Checking traffic
Seeing what attractions are around
Keeping an eye on home if you have ring or blink or other cameras
Relatives keeping in touch
Emergency information

And more

Just because some of us like to stay connected doesn't make us evil, or stupid, or lacking in any way.

I wonder how we managed to go on holiday pre internet!

Pelsall116 · 28/06/2026 17:55

Personally I wouldn't want to go anywhere where there was no internet access, especially if it was a remote location. No, I don't spend my time scrolling, but I do have various emails from time to time that I need to attend to and need to be able to nip on

Are you a bit hard of wondering? How can anyone not understand how we managed without a thing before that thing was invented?

Allonthesametrain · 28/06/2026 18:14

Did you used to enjoy holidays before the internet?

Jo7890123 · 28/06/2026 18:46

I don't think you're legally entitled to a refund, because internet isn't regarded as an essential feature of all holidays. The only way you could be definitely entitled to one, would be if you'd said when you booked, that access to the internet was a vital feature, and that your booking was conditional on it being available. But even then, you might well have had to take them to court to actually retrieve the money.
And of course, you could have Internet, but very slow or unreliable, so you'd need to specify the quality as well if its that important...could be worth checking maps of mobile reception and picking a place for a holiday based on that, so you have a back up plan, if its that important.

Did you used to enjoy holidays before the internet?

Did you used to enjoy life in general before the Internet? Because it looks like you're enjoying it more now that the Internet is available, and you're choosing to use it now to engage with others.

I used to enjoy life just fine when you had to find a phone box in the street when you needed to call somebody when you weren't at home; but that doesn't mean I would be happy with that as the standard now... nor indeed would the vast majority of people, considering that phone boxes have all but disappeared in most places, purely because nobody latterly chose to use them anymore.

It's perfectly possible to enjoy things fine well when there are more limited options available as the norm, but then to enjoy them more when more options become available as standard... or indeed sometimes replace older options which they then render obsolete and thus are no longer available or as useful/reliable as they were before.

I’m impressed by the number of people who wouldn’t check in with their work emails at all for a week, or can guarantee there won’t be any work emergency that requires their involvement while they’re away. It would be a dealbreaker for me I’m afraid, just due to the nature of my job.

SmugglersHaunt · 28/06/2026 19:48

That sounds like heaven. I would gladly pay a premium to have no internet. At the moment I have to be reachable at all times due to elderly mum, but other than that I would happily launch my phone off a cliff/into a river

frecklejuice · 28/06/2026 19:48

munchins · 27/06/2026 15:32

Wow! I wouldn’t cancel. Our summer cottage in Finland doesn’t have electricity, water closet or hot water. Only cold water comes. Dc got their phones in the start of secondary so they were used to have no phones there. Now they are teens and are ok to leave their phones home because they can’t charge them there. Two weeks off line a year. I have battery packs so can charge my phone if we need to look or book something.

And this shows how we are all different and how we probably should t judge each other. Your summer cottage in Finland and the wild camping someone mentioned above sounds like my idea of hell and isn’t what if class as a holiday!

I have two teens who wouldn’t be impressed at being cut off from everyone for a week, husband needs to be co at table for work and we all like a bit of Netflix/disney +/kindle etc in the evenings. That doesn’t mean we don’t do anything during the day just that the internet is a big part of how we all relax.

All of these holier than thou people on here who think the internet is the devil and we should all be playing scrabble in the evenings make me laugh!

frecklejuice · 28/06/2026 19:49

Also all the people saying that they would pay to go away and have no internet, you know you can switch off your devices? Just because it’s there doesn’t mean you have to use it!

SaltyKettleChip · 27/06/2026 14:30

A holiday for me (uk cottage break type) means watching copious amounts on Netflix after long walks; playing my Nintendo Switch, reading my Kindle, playing podcasts and music. No Internet would be a deal breaker for me too and I’m shocked by the people who think it isn’t a big deal.

But the non internet options : terrestrial TV, radio, books and real games are just as good?

That's the stupidest reason for cancelling a holiday I've ever seen in my life.

GeorgiePorge · 28/06/2026 20:18

@SheilaFentimanoff topic, but Landmark trust are slowing installing WiFi into their buildings where infrastructure allows. New restorations are also fitted with WiFi. You can see on their website which properties have WiFi or good 5g.

choccytime · 28/06/2026 20:21

We've booked a cottage on the Isle of Skye next week I really hope there's no internet !

I know right?

What they really mean is- they have zero self control and can’t stay off the internet despite lecturing the OP about it! Anyone can turn their WiFi off, you don’t need to pay someone to do it 🤣

Shinyhappyapple · 28/06/2026 20:27

RocketLollyPolly · 27/06/2026 14:24

I wouldn’t stay anywhere without internet. I know we all did 25 years ago but we previously lived without heating or water and it doesn’t mean we would now.

I’m with you. When we go away we spend quite a bit of time relaxing in our holiday accommodation (the main reason we rarely stay in a hotel) and for us relaxing means access to the internet.

Shinyhappyapple · 28/06/2026 20:28

Peony1985 · 28/06/2026 19:54

Nope. Why would someone on holiday where they are meant to be enjoying themselves meant to do this with fewer facilities than they have at home?

And I will !

Tabarnak · 28/06/2026 20:33

Is there 4 or 5g?

£75 buys a lot of extra data.

Tabarnak · 28/06/2026 20:35

OP: are you suited to holidays in remote / rural areas?

riversofjoy · 28/06/2026 20:38

See? No need to hope it doesn’t exist after all. You don’t have to use it! 🤣
