Cancelled holiday due to lack of internet

Rainingcatsandog · 27/06/2026 14:19

We were due to go to the Highlands today for a week. The holiday company informed us that the internet isn't working due to a general issue on the area and they don't know when it will be fixed. I was offered £75 off or the chance to change the date .I took the latter.
I'm now feeling annoyed as I think we should have been offered a full refund.
Does anyone know my rights?

Jesus, how did people manage in the pre internet dark ages.

Jesus, how did people manage in pre-electricity dark ages?
See how silly it sounds? Of course you dont (usually) die of it. But it makes life easier and more convenient.

Nope. Why would someone on holiday where they are meant to be enjoying themselves meant to do this with fewer facilities than they have at home?

Because you need those facilities at home for daily life.

Holidays however are supposed to be a nice change.
You cook on a firepit not an oven. You eat out and don't have to shop or cook. You sit on a towel near a pool, not a plush sofa.
You do stuff with the kids/partner/yourself that you don't do at home.

YOU may do. I don't do any of that.

Mind-boggling, I know

Yeah - well thankfully we don’t all have the same rules when it comes to holidays! And we aren’t all in the same situations either. What you mean is that you do these things on your holidays. You do you, and I’ll do me.

That sounds like heaven. I would gladly pay a premium to have no internet. At the moment I have to be reachable at all times due to elderly mum, but other than that I would happily launch my phone off a cliff/into a river

So apart from your mum, why dont you switch off everything else?

I wouldn’t stay anywhere without internet. I know we all did 25 years ago but we previously lived without heating or water and it doesn’t mean we would now.

You lived without water?

ThistleTits · 29/06/2026 00:21

@Rainingcatsandog you holiday your way. If that's spending time on the Internet, that's fine, it's your time to do whatever you choose. I don't think you should be offered a full refund.

basoon · 29/06/2026 08:28

I would buy mobile data or whatever it's called. And go.

I can’t - her carers contact me by WhatsApp and messenger

she's saying people used to live without running water.

happychops · 29/06/2026 09:50

I’m with you OP. We have a certain number of “must haves” when choosing a holiday home either UK or abroad and internet connection is one of those.

I know right?

What they really mean is- they have zero self control and can’t stay off the internet despite lecturing the OP about it! Anyone can turn their WiFi off, you don’t need to pay someone to do it 🤣

It's like alcoholics self-righteously declaring that all pubs should be closed down and nobody should be able to enjoy an occasional pint or glass of wine - just because it's harmful/inadvisable/unmanageable for them personally.

Lilypad789 · 29/06/2026 10:04

The internet would be a deal breaker for us as a family too. It would be miserable snd completely untenable for us for various reasons. Don’t let anyone shame you for it being a non-negotiable for you. I think you should have been offered a refund but I don’t know where you stand legally, sorry. How disappointing, sorry.

SmugglersHaunt · 29/06/2026 13:40

The main reason I dislike my phone is because I can be contacted at any time

Have you got kids, is that why? I was really shocked at the way my stepdaughter and her husband reacted when the internet signal was very poor at their accommodation. When I mentioned it, they said the kids wanted to go home as they couldn't go on the internet unless they used up all their usage allowance. The dad was just about as bad as the first thing he does if they visit for the weekend is etc up his PlayStation in the bedroom.

So turn it off. Or put it 9n Do Not Disturb (if you need to be contactable by select people, you can allow only them to get through).

Ok so as PP have suggested you can turn off everything but WhatsApp and messenger. Noone is forcing you to surf the internet are they? this thread is insane- people are acting like someone is forcing them too check their social media 50 times a day

SheilaFentiman · 29/06/2026 19:15

Outdoor pool? Cooking on a fire pit?

This is Scotland in summer. Will no one think of the midges???

I’m not sure if you (and others) are wilfully misunderstanding. I don’t want to have my phone with me. I don’t care what’s switched on or off - it makes no difference. I want to be able to go out without it if I choose, but am unable to because people need to get hold of me. It’s really not hard to understand

I haven’t said I’m being forced to go on the internet. I just want to be able to go out without my phone but can’t in case the carers need to get hold of me. It’s not a difficult concept to grasp. Please ask someone if you’re struggling.
