Cancelled holiday due to lack of internet

Rainingcatsandog · 27/06/2026 14:19

We were due to go to the Highlands today for a week. The holiday company informed us that the internet isn't working due to a general issue on the area and they don't know when it will be fixed. I was offered £75 off or the chance to change the date .I took the latter.
I'm now feeling annoyed as I think we should have been offered a full refund.
Does anyone know my rights?

Right, I think the essence of this thread is that “some people don’t understand other people like different things to them” and that’s not gonna change. So I’m kicking myself offline to do some chores now that it’s slightly less hot!

OP, I hope you have a great trip and the internet works on your rearranged dates!

So then what was the point of the comment? the OP clearly doesnt find a place with no running water to be "bliss" on holiday so your comment was therefore completely irrelevant.

Thats like a poster asking about how to cook a roast beef dinner and someone replying "some of us are vegan you know" 🙄

The point of my comment was that I was replying to

"RocketLollyPolly · Yesterday 14:24
I wouldn’t stay anywhere without internet. I know we all did 25 years ago but we previously lived without heating or water and it doesn’t mean we would now."

I quoted her and said that "Some of us would and do." and in fact do when they go camping.

It was just part of the discussion which was clear if you took my comment in context.

Just because you're wild camping it doesn't mean you don't wash in warm water.

Let me guess, you fetch water from the river, heat it over the fire and then pour it over yourself behind a shrub. Thanks but no thanks.

It's not necessarily like that and if you're not a fan of camping you're not a fan.

That's why I said 'some' people.

My response was perfectly adequate! Some people like "going wild", some don't.

I like camping only if there are clean toilets and hot shower available.

I think it was the comment about it being "pure bliss" that people had issue with.

Its clearly not actually bliss if none of us choose to live that way now otherwise you'd find people cancelling their electricity and water supply on the regular if it really is genuinely blissful

DorissDaze · 28/06/2026 14:48

To be fair, @Rainingcatsandog isn't asking for the internet for entertainment.

She mentions a previous 'bad experience'.

I don't know what this means but maybe some emergency?

@Rainingcatsandog for peace of mind you can buy a Garmin device that pairs with your phone even when no signal, to send texts.

If you want to holiday in remote areas it's maybe worth considering investing in more tech for peace of mind.

No one can guarantee internet or mobile phone signals anywhere , anytime, so if it's really important, you can get a back up system.

localnotail · 28/06/2026 14:49

OP, if the place was advertised as having wifi then its perfectly fine for you to cancel if there are no wifi. What if you booked it intending to work? That would be totally unacceptable.

For a short period, for some people, myself included, wild camping can be sheer bliss for some people.

I don't speak for anyone else when I say this and am not intending to detract from other anyone else's enjoyment of running water and electricity.

Hopefully this won't cause issues.

Thats totally fair enough. I just find it mind boggling is all- I cannot think of anything I would viscerally despise more, but we are all different!

rwalker · 28/06/2026 14:56

Is mobile internet still on you can get a prepaid sim

Having the internet on holiday is my idea of hell. Yes, we're all different for sure.

sweatymessi · 28/06/2026 15:00

@PintofFizzwhere do you go in holiday that has zero internet?

What a load of performative wankery going on in this thread. The irony of posters feeling the need to demonstrate how they have transcended the need for online activity by posting comments on an online forum.

The hypocrisy has been quite amusing though 🤣

Choosing to escape from the modern world for a few days holiday doesn't mean you have to live like it all the time.

Yes, and it also doesn't mean the OP is wrong for wanting internet access on holiday. There's nothing unreasonable about that.

There have been plenty of wanky posts in this thread expressing faux horror that the OP dared to want Wi-Fi, while lecturing her that she should be spending her free time going for walks, doing jigsaws, or whatever else they personally approve of.
There's also been a fair bit of moral posturing from people insisting they don't need the internet to enjoy themselves... while making that very point on the internet 🤭

sweatymessi · 28/06/2026 15:21

@PintofFizzI think if you try really hard you can still understand my question, you may surprise yourself!

I never once said the OP was wrong or unreasonable.

My first post was suggesting she referred to the agreement she had with the holiday company.

Pretty sure there's no obligation on them to offer you a discount or the chance to reschedule. Internet isn't a necessity (despite what others might think) & tbh it feels odd that you think it should entitle you to a full refund. You could still have gone, it's not like they simply cancelled your trip.
