Cancelled holiday due to lack of internet

We were due to go to the Highlands today for a week. The holiday company informed us that the internet isn't working due to a general issue on the area and they don't know when it will be fixed. I was offered £75 off or the chance to change the date .I took the latter.
I'm now feeling annoyed as I think we should have been offered a full refund.
Does anyone know my rights?

They didn't have to offer you anything unless it's specifically listed in the ad and even then £75 is more than adequate. It's not their fault its down.

Rainingcatsandog · 27/06/2026 14:44

We had a week earlier in the year with no internet or phone signal. We enjoyed the peace but it did make things quite difficult at times which is why we don't want that again.

Interesting problem.
i wouldn’t purposefully book anywhere without wifi, it’s so useful for looking at the weather forecast (I’m specifically thinking for uk breaks where the forecast changes hourly), tide times, local restaurants, maps, all the sorts of stuff that’s useful if you’re visiting a new place for the first time.
Obviously all of that information will be possible to source without the internet but convenience is key on holiday for me.
We often stay somewhere in Cornwall where there’s no wifi, we all have unlimited data so not an issue, we use the house as a base, somewhere to sleep and shower and spend most of the day out and about.
But I do like to have the internet, it has a lot of perks!

Cockerpoomom · 27/06/2026 14:44

My Dad wouldn't go either if he couldn't watch his YouTube videos or search eBay on a night but he's disabled so doesn't go out much. He will be left mostly at the holiday accommodation if we went on holiday like he is at home, he wouldn't be very happy if he had no internet.
So on that basis I do understand why you would want a refund.

Astonished that some people regard doom scrolling as a vital part of their family holiday.

Who mentioned that doom scrolling is vital?

Holidays fall under consumer rights, but as you've accepted the change of date instead of asking for a refund, you don't have any rights. Check your terms and conditions and ask for a refund minus any cancellation fees.

KateSixer · 27/06/2026 14:45

Madness.

The phone signal would have been enough even if you only find it once or twice a day.

You'd have to look at the agreement you signed when you booked the holiday.

This. I doubt you would be entitled to a full refund but it's worth checking if you're that bothered.

No it isn't as we have found from experience

Some also wouldn’t. Or some like a bit of both.

That's why I said 'some'.

I know. But I counter balancing the argument.

No, different location.

If there is a mobile signal you should be able to get the internet on your phone and then hot spot for other devices?

MyDeftDuck · 27/06/2026 14:52

They offered to switch the dates which would mean the venue would possibly mean the venue would be stood empty for your first choice had you accepted an alternate date 🤷‍♀️. Why demand a full refund? You’ll be expecting a free holiday next!

Jellycatspyjamas · 27/06/2026 14:52

The highlands can be hit or miss for phone signal, I would have cancelled too.

Canonlythinkofthisone · 27/06/2026 14:55

How do you all figure out where you're going? Like, when we go on holiday and then think of things to do or pick up brochures for days out, or looking for somewhere to eat...how do you plan your days without access to websites/reviews/train times/maps etcetc
Baffled.

Look it's obviously a matter of personal choice so it's up to you of course.

It's possible that you have special reasons that require you to be immediately contactable. But if so that wasn't clear in your OP and everyone has jumped to the possibly totally unjustified conclusion that you can't live without social media!

But you did ask so I assumed you had some initial doubt?

UhOhRatPoo · 27/06/2026 14:56

Rainingcatsandog · 27/06/2026 14:51

No, different location.

In that case I’d be finding out if the phone signal was adequate before arguing that the accommodation would not have been fit for purpose.

Stegosaur · 27/06/2026 14:56

I would have asked which phone companies have decent service in the area, and if your phone will work then I would have gone on the holiday and used the £75 to buy more data if needed. If it turns out your phone company doesn't cover the area I would have changed the dates if internet is vital for you on a holiday.

Same way as people did pre 2010

I find it quite depressing that you would cancel your holiday because of lack of internet. And I say that as someone who spends way too much time on line- including now on a beautiful sunny afternoon. Surely holidays should be about connecting with each other, enjoying nature, maybe doing some new activities, seeing new sights, treating yourselves to lovely food and drink, not doom scrolling or updating your socials. You definitely shouldn’t get a full refund . Many people would pay to get a proper digital detox!

This is ridiculous. the judgement about using the internet on some of these posts from people who are actively spending their Saturday scoffing at strangers posts ON THE INTERNET

Pay to have a digital detox? They can’t just switch off their own devices?

Holidays without WiFi would be so inconvenient now.. looking up opening times of local attractions, recommendations for sightseeing, restaurant reviews and bookings, checking what the weather will be like etc.. and yes entertaining yourself by streaming films, social media etc if you so desire.

Miranda65 · 27/06/2026 15:00

It was your choice, OP, because of a very minor change. I think the company have been more than generous with you.

This! And if you know where you're going, I think most of us would research stuff this in advance, surely? Plus, if you absolutely have to check something, just use data for 5 minutes. It is perfectly possible to manage without the Internet.
