Cancelled holiday due to lack of internet

Rainingcatsandog · 27/06/2026 14:19

We were due to go to the Highlands today for a week. The holiday company informed us that the internet isn't working due to a general issue on the area and they don't know when it will be fixed. I was offered £75 off or the chance to change the date .I took the latter.
I'm now feeling annoyed as I think we should have been offered a full refund.
Does anyone know my rights?

How do you all figure out where you're going? Like, when we go on holiday and then think of things to do or pick up brochures for days out, or looking for somewhere to eat...how do you plan your days without access to websites/reviews/train times/maps etcetc
Baffled

Same way as people did pre 2010

Life was set up for no internet in those days so the comparison is ridiculous.
I am 50 so spent more than half of my life with no internet but I would not go on holiday if there was no wifi or 4/5G

sweatymessi · 28/06/2026 12:01

Also, saying "I managed without it, so everyone else should" doesn't really follow. Not everyone is you. HTH

MNs really struggles with this concept 😆

Jade9114 · 28/06/2026 12:03

You cancelled a holiday because of no internet - has the world gone mad!!!! We literally go on a cruise

sweatymessi · 28/06/2026 12:04

hahabahbag · 28/06/2026 11:46

Why do you need internet? I don’t watch tv etc on holiday - that’s for boring home life times in winter. I think they were good to even tell you

Well @hahabahbagdoesn't need it so why do you? 🙄

LittleSoo · 28/06/2026 12:05

I would move the dates too. I don't need internet for entertainment, but I do need it to keep in touch with the cat sitter. If something happened they need to be able to contact me.

They really do 🤣

Its like they cannot fathom that anyone might gasp choose differently to them or that people are not all the same

I dont like cruises so therefore neither should you! has the world gone mad??

sweatymessi · 28/06/2026 12:07

@riversofjoyI mean don’t they have friends, colleagues, family who like different things so they can at least imagine such a scenario? 🤔

LondonLass2026 · 27/06/2026 14:29

We went glamping last year and there was precisely zero Internet, and we got on just fine! What's the problem?

They aren't you?

Its sort of fascinating how you can get adulthood and not realise that people might be different to you

Alltheparmesanplease · 28/06/2026 12:09

All those asking why you would need the internet on holiday most definitely use the internet on holiday themselves.

Good old righteous Mumsnet.

Bikenutz · 28/06/2026 12:10

Intrigued that a fairly simple question about consumer rights has generated 10 pages of debate! 😁

Alwayswonderedwhy · 28/06/2026 12:11

We're you supposed to be working while you're away? If not I don't really see the issue. As long as you've got data to use if needed.

@riversofjoyI do think there is a kind of MNs specific arrested development It’s the only explanation when you see some of the replies!

Catdaysofsummer · 28/06/2026 12:14

We live in the Highlands and absolutely need internet - taking the kids out over the summer holidays and most places need to booked online and activities pre booked, usually book closer to time depending on weather. We also research places and check maps, opening hours and availability - the Highlands are no different to anywhere else, its helpful to have internet to function! Weather also not great in places this week, would hate to be without internet on holiday on kids with current thunder and rain, we are a very active and outdoor family who live rurally, play tons of board games etc but enjoy listening to music and watching movies on tv as a family, don't like individual devices with downloads when together, and yes on holiday i like to doom scroll as i have rare time!! Some strange response on here!

If the whole area are off, its going to be a pest and likely affect the phone signal too We couldnt go on holiday and be out of contact as we have wider responsibilities. I would ask if option to cancel, we run a holiday business and if we can't fulfill what was advertised, we would offer a refund. Depends on wording of booking and terms and conditions and now you've accepted the alternative it may affect option for refund. Hope you get a solution you're happy with.

thetemptationofchocolate · 28/06/2026 12:15

I've got a cottage booked for later this year that has no wifi or phone signal. It was cheaper to rent than others in the same area which had wifi (funnily enough, about £75 cheaper!). I thought long & hard before booking but I really loved the place.
I don't spend a huge amount of time online anyway so I'm hoping I will not get withdrawal symptoms! But I can see that for a family with children (especially teens) this prospect would be fairly dreadful.
It must be making life very hard for everyone who lives there just now.

Cruises are phenomenally polluting.

This actually reminds me of those wonderful
Covid threads!

“I was driving today & the roads are packed, don’t people understand there is a pandemic”

”I went to for a dog walk & the park was full of people, why aren’t people taking the pandemic seriously”

numpties!

Frequency · 28/06/2026 12:18

Snugglemonkey · 28/06/2026 11:51

You could, but I don't want to. We like to spend the evening watching something, or listening to the things we feel like and choosing what we fancy at the time. We check out the weather and plan the next day. Dc like an hour on their games after a busy day, while we cook.

It is a holiday. People should be doing what they enjoy.

True, but it sounds like OP has lost her money from the holiday now, and it's unlikely she will get a full refund for the wifi being down, especially as 5G is available and she's been offered a £70 refund, which will more than cover any extra costs incurred from using data.

It seems shortsighted and silly to me to lose £££ and miss your holiday over something there is an easy workaround for.

Fair enough to book a holiday on the basis it has internet, but to cancel when the wifi has a fault and lose your money seems excessive. I love the internet, computers, tech in general, but I'd be taking a long, hard look at my life if I couldn't manage a week without wifi.

the things is, most of the brochures, menus, leaflets are only available online so its not that easy to find info

DorissDaze · 28/06/2026 12:23

I doubt they would offer you a full refund for something out of their control.
It's not as if they are advertising a holiday with full, guaranteed internet, are they?

It would be different if it was something directly related to the accommodation which they could repair etc.

For example if there was snow or a flood, either delaying or preventing your journey, would you expect the holiday accommodation to be refunded?

My take on it is that if you book a holiday somewhere remote, it's quite possible that there may be issues with the internet or power supplies at some point.
If you need to be in constant contact with anyone or for an emergency, it's maybe not sensible to choose very rural destinations.

And being practical, if it is remote, and there is an emergency , you could probably get to a phone in an nearby village quite quickly assuming you have a car.

PintofFizz · 27/06/2026 14:38

Some of us would and do. Wild camping with no heating or running water. Pure bliss.

Shitting in a hole is not my idea of absolute bliss!

OP I’d be a bit cheesed off but not that fussed really as long as I could still get in touch with elderly family members if need be. The thing is mobile signal in the highlands is likely to be shit as well.

LyssaMoon · 28/06/2026 12:33

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

For real?!

I think the fact that you are so scared of being without internet for a week is the reason you NEED to be without the internet for a week!!!!

Omg... Whatever did we do before the internet?! Lol.
