Is this a Dutch auction ?

It's clear that considering the MSMs main goal was to oust Keir Starmer, they clearly didn't think it through (and yes, there is a subtext there). Seems they are wrong footed by having installed someone who seems to get across and isn't afraid to show it.

I can't remember where, but I saw a comment that Burnham has already come in and done more than Starmer ever did, which is to demonstrate he's not afraid to govern. Which indeed what someone who has a 150+ majority should exude.

I know hindsight is 20/20, but even now I am struggling to think of any moments when Starmer convincingly looked like someone who won what may be the biggest landslide of the 21st century

dontcallmelen · 29/06/2026 17:09

It always seemed as though Keir Starmer was permanently holding the Ming vase.

PickAChew · 29/06/2026 17:17

I think that Starmer's majority was largely a vote for a no drama Starmer. It's unfortunate that the main side effect was the lack of fire with which to handle the press and the threat from the right.

I can think of a few moments internationally. Saying no to Trump was one of them. Standing with Macron to support Zelenskyy was another. Unfortunately he was appreciated far less at home than he was abroad.

I mean, it started well before the General Election.

TemperanceWest · 29/06/2026 20:17

The avalanche of anti-Burnham threads has begun. But they are struggling really to find much of real substance to fling at him at the moment. The main one is him being hard left etc. And some frothing about the Number 10 in the North idea.

Btw. We are not supposed to criticise Badenoch for her hateful words. It is racist to do so, some posters have implied.

That's if Farage sticks around.

There's always Lowe.

I do wish MNHQ would zap the anti immigration threads as soon as they start. They’re just an excuse for an outpouring of xenophobic hate. The current one is disgusting.

DuncinToffee · 29/06/2026 20:38

The anti immigration rhetoric is now part of the Brexit thread as well.

You'd think the people most worried about an influx of refugees would be against the creation of more refugees through excessive bombing of various places. But strangely no. Which suggests either they don't really believe immigration isn't the existential threat to the UK they claim it is. Or they do believe it but believe it's a small price to pay for the bombing.

Former Conservative MP Craig Williams has pleaded guilty to cheating at gambling by placing bets on the date of the 2024 general election.

Are they frightened of something? Racism is borne through fear of the unknown.

The situation with the build up of asylum applicants in hotels was a total shit show to be fair. I've never had any issues myself (although randomly we were in a cheap hotel for a wedding and found out some corridors had been put aside for refugees (including women and children). That was ages ago before it became A Thing and I felt a bit bad for them). But long term it's expensive and affects the local economy because the hotel owner can sack half his staff.
Clearing the backlog, and either sending back failed applicants or moving successful applicants on to other housing is going to take a while though. And in the meantime there is going to be constant shit stirring.
It's not helped by the fact there have been some well publicised cases as well. So it's not like all the problems are imaginary. But also people have been imagining things (eg the Epsom riots)
But it's an easy wound to poke at for people that want to cause trouble in the UK or trouble for Labour. So there's going to continue to be a lot of posts.

Hard, because someone "reporting an experience they had" could be the truth and Mumsnet banning people from talking about their concerns could then be construed as a cover up/shutting down concerns. Which makes everything worse. It is surprising that it's always the same posters who have all the stories of stuff that has happened in front of them or in their quiet village or in their busy multicultural city depending on the day.

placemats · 29/06/2026 21:04

The threads descend into them versus us. And not in a good way. The collective "we" is used often and is designed to intimidate and ramp up the fear.

You could also argue that's all Mumsnet is. So if they crack down on that, What's left?

It's interesting that the conversation about white working class boys vibe shifted from lamenting said white populations neglect at the expense of critical race theory and DEI seamlessly into they are all lazy and feckless and low IQ anyway. Literally anything other than taking practical steps to make anything better.

DuncinToffee · 29/06/2026 21:15

That is probably because a lot of the recommendations how to help these children include those things they have lambasted Labour for

Piggywaspushed · 29/06/2026 21:19

I have a lot of opinions about that report and its dodgy use of aggregated data but am not even going to glance at that thread.
