Badenoch has been giving a speech

https://bsky.app/profile/peterwalker99.bsky.social/post/3mpg72urnis24

Asked about likening Bridget Phillipson’s policy of imposing VAT on private schools to the Gestapo, Badenoch says she sticks by her words as both “put ideology before the welfare of children”. I mean, that’s one criticism of the Gestapo, I suppose.

"The government will repeal the Vagrancy Act on Monday 29 June 2026, ending nearly two centuries of legislation that has criminalised rough sleeping and begging"

Great news - we need more comms around these good policies.
Surely no party can object to this one - after all folk are only homeless due to small boats 👀

Interesting (aka abhorrently oblivious) take.

This should then apply to the 2 child benefit cap?

Fans of Dennis Wheatley (I know, I know) will know that when you start summoning dark forces, if they cannot strike at the intended target (because the target has Christopher Lee as the duc de Richleau 😎) they return to wreak their demonic design upon the person who summoned them.

If you see black magic as a metaphor for the forces of populism. it works quite well.

It's hard to recommend DW. Certain in his black magic books (all I have read) the coyness over sex is more than made up for with lashings of unabashed racism.

Wheatley was a terrible writer, but I do love 'The Devil Rides Out because of Christopher Lee.

He wasn't wrong about the dangers of black magic though. Although the less fashionable lack the imagination to see why. I love it when people parade their stupidity as somehow rational. It certainly gets noted in the old memory banks.

Ah - so I have a full set of his black magic books (as far as I know) - early editions. These were inherited and, as book buyer guy, ignored them, are now in eye watering storage along with many other collections.

I hate to bin books and charity shops are reluctant to take books at the minute. But maybe they will not be useful anywhere then. I own to never reading one, though planned to, I don’t think I will now - my parents hadn’t touched them for decades I know - they also fortunately were never racist though had a bit of the BE belief in them at times.

I prefer, and do read, the golden age crime fiction they collected - though that too can have its issues - then again I find books interesting in just naturally reflecting the time of writing and am not a fan actually of updating this - quandary when transferred to another medium though I think eg/ film or tv.

Anyway, thank you for the heads up on DW.

That film scared the shit out of me when I first saw it, about age 12.

I am sensing some buyer's remorse setting in amongst the anti-Starmer folk now that their euphoria over his ousting has faded. They are busy shouting about Burnham being far-left etc.

We may be the same age ..

There used to be a double bill of horror films on BBC2 Saturday nights. I remember they had a 1930s version of "The Mummy" and then a 1960s version (with the much missed aforementioned Mr. Lee). DM noted how in the later one you ended up feeling sorry for the Mummy.

I probably was exposed to all sorts of things that people would clutch their pearls at. Starting with DMs catholic taste in books at about 10 a week from the library and the ones she would buy as well.

Returning to modern day horrors, I think the right are reaping the rewards of trying to make politics personal. Polling may be showing that the less politically engaged (i.e the majority) feel that having achieved their goal of ousting Starmer, they have done their job. As ever, time will tell

Given the news that Penelope Keith has passed, I recall that DM had a yellow covered book about self sufficiency (she had a lot of greenie views, hence being a natural Liberal) long before "The Good Life" hit our screens. DF made it clear that no animals would be kept 😀

dontcallmelen · 29/06/2026 11:43

Oh sad news about Penelope Keith, loved her character Margo “Don’t swear Jerry & don’t bleed in the sink I’ve just cleaned it” RIP a vert talented actor.

placemats · 29/06/2026 11:59

"Oh Jerry!" Sad news indeed about Penelope Keith.

Christopher Lee had an interesting life before he became an actor.

There are plenty of clips of him being interviewed in a constellation of languages. And he knew Tolkien. And he read MR James ...

Badenoch called Milliband a 'villain' and 'Nigerian dictator'

How long beofre that will get repeated alongside the Gestapo comment

She also said to 'stop worrying about hurty words' which should mean no more reporting from lurkers, no?

PickAChew · 29/06/2026 12:20

Is she quite all right? She's behaving like a gobby 12 year old.

I wonder how a white politician would have been received if they had said that ?

Maybe Reform have a point after all ?

TemperanceWest · 29/06/2026 12:25

Burnham managed not to stoop to her level in his speech and called for an end to that sort of twattery.

Best drop the Katie Hopkins act, Badenoch.

@SerendipityJane I loved those double bills!

I think she spends too much time online TBH. I know that's ironic given we are all communicating with each other online right now. But it's the sort of thing that comes across better on Twitter than real life. And actually, while engaging with the online sphere is important, not everyone (or even most people) are on Twitter.

I think in some ways there was more of this leaning back in the day - rather than it being a modern on trend idea.

My Dad had Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring from when it came out - amongst other similar environmental books - he was originally a science teacher and had a big interest in it all. He also wouldn’t use unnatural pesticides on his garden nor randomly, naybe connected, didn’t want my mum to use the pill either (didn’t matter ultimately as I was adopted).

So some green views but a staunch Tory - my ma once voted green though when she was sick of the Tories - she liked their environmental stuff.

They were born 1931/33 if that has any bearing on approach.

I’m not actually sure she is - she seems quite incoherent with some of her ‘hurty’ words, but overall I’m really not sure of Tory ideology any more or policy views - maybe that’s on me.

MsJinks · 29/06/2026 12:41

And of course RIP Penelope Keith - loved The Good Life and To The Manor Born - heard her as well on quite a few R4 dramas/series on sounds - always recognisable and always so good.

Christopher Lee - long time since I recalled him - my parents loved him and the horrors on tv - which I occasionally got to see too. I love he liked MR James and metal - and the rest but I like both the former myself lol.

So nice to be able to remember nice, well rounded, very talented people simply for who they are, or were.

BIossomtoes · 29/06/2026 12:45

So sad to see Penelope Keith’s left us. I thought she was younger than 86. I hope there’s a Harrods delivery in heaven.

Evenstar · 29/06/2026 12:52

I loved Margo’s outfits on The Good Life, I bought a wonderful maxi dress to go to a gig last year and said to DH that I felt very “Margo”.

She was a great actress and I agree brought out the vulnerable side of characters that seemed snobbish and difficult.

DuncinToffee · 29/06/2026 13:04

I haven't watched Burnham's speech yet but it sounds like he is serious about devolution?
