Guess my age

No this isn't going to be one of those threads where I post a photograph and ask you to say how old you think I look.

I just thought for a bit of fun for anyone who like me has too much time on their hands, I would post a few facts about myself and see if you can guess my age.

I will post odd random facts over the next day, then tell you my age tomorrow.

This is a new user name, in case I have mentioned my age in previous post.

Fact 1) My mother used to wear dresses made of crimplene.

Fact 2) My father used to ride a bike and wore cycle clips to stop his trousets from getting caught in the cycle chain.

Really??!

Oh sorry to the reveal being tomorrow - I have no patience! I will tune back into then!

Another memory - not really a clue, but to show how times have changed. When I was in the sixth form at school, there was a dedicated smoking area where pupils over 16 could go for a cigarette.

Okay, on the basis of that I'm going to change my guess to 90!

NotAWurstToIt · 18/06/2026 20:55

82?

WhatKeptYou · 18/06/2026 20:57

I get where you are coming from but it really was normal at one time.

fivepastmidnight · 18/06/2026 21:02

I recognise a lot of these and I'm 58, I think going from your parents date of birth you must be older or they were older parents when you were born. Gcses came in around about 1985 1986 I think so to have done O levels you must have sat your exams 1984 or earlier. The house prices are thrown me though because you need to live in an expensive area Or you bought a large house.
Aberfan was 66 but how old were you when you remembered it I can remember Elvis dying just about but I was only a young child. I am going to say you are 72 and that your parents were in the 40s when you were born.

Paddingtonridesagain · 18/06/2026 21:08

For those guessing OP's age as late 70s/80s, she cannot be more than around 75 as she was first able to vote at 18. Older people came of age at 71.

Paddingtonridesagain · 18/06/2026 21:09

Apologies for my typo - older people came of age at 21, not 71.

I remember Elvis dying really clearly and I am just a bit younger than you. I was at Brownie camp and lots of the Brownies cried. Except me, because I didn't actually know who he was.

Snoopymayhem · 18/06/2026 21:23

It’s the boots uniform that’s got me
so confused but I’m
upping your age OP to 73 born 1953

honeylulu · 18/06/2026 21:30

I'm going to guess 80, my mums age. As my dad who is 84 can remember ration books but my mum can't! My mum had very young parents born after WW1 but my dad's were born born before so I think that would work.

Though that would have made you over 20 by Aberfan, so I think you must be younger.

75?

I'm trying to remember the name of the oil where two girls were shown side by side, but the girl with the deep tan had a longer, fuller ponytail, a nicer bikini, etc.

Started with a 'B', maybe...It's gone. Can't remember. Berga...?

I recall my Dad laughing at me, and telling me that the stuff would just fry my skin.

Bergasol!!!!

Guess my age

Or you could just wait until you got on the bus!!!!!!

Thank you!

magimedi · 18/06/2026 21:39

I reckon you are the same age as me - born in 1955.

disturbia · 18/06/2026 21:40

75

LaMarschallin · 18/06/2026 21:43

Haven't read all of this but, based on the 1st television info, 79.

Crummles1 · 18/06/2026 21:45

I am getting confused now

My youngest sibling was the last cohort to take O Levels and is 55 - so born 1970/71
Does not remember decimalisation or the 3 day week - obviously!

I am the oldest child and remember all the above, but not the Aberfan disaster of 1966 as I was very young

OP - do you remember the Apollo 11 moon landing? Not live but it being talked about? Did you eat Mars Bars, Milky Ways etc. The winter of 1962/63?

icannotlivelaughloveintheseconditions · 18/06/2026 21:52

The house price is throwing me because I bought my first house in the 1990’s for 28k but I’m guessing yours was earlier and you live in a more affluent area than me.
im saying 76.

Yes, I remember the moon landing. I did eat Mars Bars and Milky Way occasionally. Also black jacks and fruit salad.

My favourite childhood birthday or Christmas presents were a Tressy doll (her hair grows) and Spirograph.

Ooh!
Younger than I thought then.
Dramatically going down from 79 to 63.

Corinthiana · 18/06/2026 22:12

openthefrontdoor · 18/06/2026 19:28

I've got vague memories of it being talked about, but that's all.

I'm 66 and remember it very clearly. The powercuts and the cold days and nights. Shops and schools lit by candle light. Miserable.
So you must be a lot younger, because if you'd lived through that, you'd never forget.

I had those, too! That Spirograph was a proper craze, wasn't it?
