Preston Davey - whole life term for murderer and 25 years for the partner.
Let’s hope and pray yet again things change so no more poor babies and children die.

Were the baby’s injuries inflicted on the day he died? Because I’m struggling to understand how they could have been hidden if not. He had two hospital admissions in the weeks leading up to his death and was looked after by Varley’s mother on the morning he died. How is it possible that those injuries went undetected? Surely there was extensive external damage?

Ok, that is fair enough, but the vast majority of gay men wouldn"t abuse a baby in their care?

Men. Gay, straight, bi, in a dress, whatever.

The vast, vast majority of violent and sexual offenders are male. Natal male. Men.

Its just the data.

This crime was abhorrent. It was perpetrated by males. Anything else is rhetoric and is a shameful divergence from the terrible tragedy that poor beautiful baby suffered in his short life.

Lougle · 18/06/2026 22:50

There are multiple layers to this. Firstly, Varley only qualified as a teacher in 2021. So within 2 years of qualifying, he had a pastoral role and was head of year, with safeguarding responsibilities. This is typical of men in teaching - it is well known that men progress higher and faster than women.

The fact that he was a teacher with significant responsibility gave Varley credibility in the adoption process.

The two men had only known each other 3 years at the point that they started the adoption assessment process, and had only bought their home in the year before they started the process.

I would say that isn't a very stable base to start an adoption on.

By 2023 he was taking a year off to torment Preston. That's quite a career trajectory. NQT, promotion, sabbatical all in 3 years.

Ohdearnotthisagain · 18/06/2026 23:36

I cried when I first read about this. It’s almost unbearable to think about. That poor baby.

I too hope both men live long and terribly unhappy lives in prison.

maudelovesharold · 19/06/2026 00:17

I can’t understand why the Judge and all news reports are using the term ‘sexual abuse’ as a kind of blanket euphemism for what the two degenerates did to Preston. Sexual abuse of any kind is horrific, but it diminishes the horror to not face up to the reality that the baby was orally and anally raped. Why aren’t they stating that fact? It needs some sort of shock tactic to try and shake up the system which allowed this to happen. There must be more robust safeguarding measures put in place to supervise potential adopters, not just leave them to it, and unless the full depths of some people’s depravity is exposed, the danger is that concerns will continue to be swept under the carpet again and again. The foster parents knew something was going badly wrong and should have been listened to, as Preston’s only real parents.

Afaik it was “only” oral

Afaik it was “only” oral

Pathologists from the Home Office discovered approximately 40 internal and external injuries on the toddler’s body. This included internal bleeding and injuries around the bladder and bottom. During the trial at Preston Crown Court, medical experts testified that these injuries were clinical signs of sexual abuse and were consistent with "forcible penetration" of the child.

BBC report.

@kellymoon44
'Those men were more than likely - severelyabused themselves as children. This hardens people and makes them become cruel.'

That is just not true. I think you mean 'some' people. I grew up in horrific abuse, as did my siblings. None of us has gone on to abuse our own children. Please don't punish people abused in childhood, already coping with so much, by suggesting that they will most likely to go on and abuse.

Well too bad, she does have the right. You’ll have to just get over it. Her child being murder we isn't some kind of fucked up karma, and she does have every right to be devastated.

I never implied karma at all, thats a disgusting comment.

It would not be sad if they were killed in prison.

A call for murder.

kellymoon44 · 18/06/2026 13:54

I've reached a stage where I can understand how those two men got to be like how they are. I grew up in a very abusive home and I did a huge amount of healing and research. Those men were more than likely - severelyabused themselves as children. This hardens people and makes them become cruel.

As a society , we are all failing children. What is making adults be cruel to children? Too much pressure on adults, not enough help. Also people were abused themselves and copy behaviour,

Jamie Varley in this instance said he couldn't cope with looking after the baby. In this case the men were extra disgusting. But it is society that needs to change.

How can we all improve as a society. We need to give more support to parents so they are more able to cope. My aunt was abusive to her son when he was a child. I saw her constantly shout at him and show him no live. When I was older, she told me that she found it too difficult and couldn't cope

What a load of offensive nonsense.

They raped a baby.

No doubt the full extent of the malpractice of social workers and medical professionals will come to light in due course.

And lessons will be learned...

It would not be sad if they were killed in prison.

Not for a long time.

They will not have an easy time, I feel a bit sorry for the prison officers who have to keep them safe.

“Only” that is what killed him. Use your imagination as to how he was asphyxiated.

Just to say, the poster you’re responding to is wrong. The baby had internal injuries consistent with anal penetration also.

It’s inconceivable to me that those injuries weren’t seen by medical staff when the baby was twice admitted to hospital. Or that the baby would be taken to hospital in the first place by the perpetrators. Surely they would have expected the injuries to be seen?

You’d think so, wouldn’t you? Varley even apparently commented on one visit ‘You lot will think we’ve been abusing him, or something…’ No doubt then to be reassured that they weren’t thinking any such thing. If only they had exercised more professional curiosity…

So in nutshell- he found a way to access kids, gain credibility and a way-in to social prestige/cache in adoption or fostering. Then when he was done and had manipulated the system and pulled the wool over the eyes of agencies involved, he didn't need the role as cover any more.

It's sick, deeply sick.

The thing is, even a child on a child protection plan (if they were taken in with the same issues) would not have their nappy checked for injuries caused by sexual violence. They’d be treated for the broken arm and the breathing difficulties.

In this case it was decided none of it was suspicious, so there is no way they’d just do that kind of precautionary check.

Why have you come on to a post about the horrific death of an innocent baby and tried to point score and goad another poster into an argument, are you okay?

This poster does this quite often on threads. Very very strange

Can you describe what a loving, happy family is that will be willing to adopt babies born into abusive households?

Don't get me wrong, a whole life sentence and a 25 year sentence is entirely appropriate for the shocking and horrific way Preston Davey died.

Plenty! He was a lovely happy baby, he'd been taken from his mother at birth and received nothing but love and kindness from his devoted foster parents.

While there is definitely penis privilege in action here, I think it’s also a sign of just how persuasive/credible he was able to be. It would be really interesting to hear what his colleagues thought of him. Did he fool everyone, or just those who could promote him?
