Thanks @Dozymoo42 @TeaAndStrumpets and @TodayIsatrickyone i think he wants to live in an entirely artificial world with no plants, animals, or dirt. They have plastic grass and ripped up all plants around their house to put gravel down. He regularly sprays weedkiller and has killed some of my wildflowers as well. It's a shame he doesn't see the value in nature because it's so vital for our mental health. We are animals after all.

@Dozymoo42 your dh sounds lovely sorting you out a place to sit! People really need to look where they're going though.

Have a lovely holiday @TodayIsatrickyone !

Dozymoo42 · 04/07/2026 14:10

Honestly @TeaAndStrumpets it was a real eye opener, I was always brought up to be kind and help people who were through no fault of their own at a disadvantage to me and in turn I brought my children up in that way. Unfortunately not everyone thinks the same sadly! But yes DH was my hero by hook or by crook he was getting me there he said unless I physically could not get out of the bed. 🥰

Oh bless him, absolute champion!

JewelleryCat · 04/07/2026 15:46

That’s awful @bedfrog what a horrible neighbour. Keeping feeding and watching the birds. Birds are lovely and I may have mentioned it to you before, I can’t remember but the Merlin app is very good for identifying birds in your area. I just use it in the garden and it’s amazing what it picks up

MewithME · 04/07/2026 21:03

Evening everyone.

@TodayIsatrickyone I vote for "TodayIswhatitis" if you're feeling zen or "TodayIWillbemostly...." If you ever watched The Fast Show in honour Jesse 😀 Have a wonderful holiday. I've started looking forward to mine now. Not long to go.

@bedfrog I really hate where we've got to in the world. That is just something that would never have happened years ago. It's just an insane thing to do and way to behave. For your own good I would just not answer the door to him in future and not engage if you can manage it. How dare he!

@martha79 hope you managed to see the exhibition. Sounds great. We stumbled on a little one today which was fun. Our nearby town is very pretty. We had lunch out and a little wander about. Had an ice cream by the river. It's like being on holiday. I love that I can go there in less than 10 mins. Always been a special place. Maybe I'll move there one day but I am with @TeaAndStrumpets that I can't bear the thought of moving! Hope it goes smoothly for both of you when the time comes.

@MewithME we live in a new development and I've been slowly enticing birds and bugs back into this area for a bit of nature, it was a barren wasteland when we moved in. I never even considered that someone would prefer NO birds or wildlife where they live. It's creepy and eerie not to hear them! People have really lost it haven't they? Rudeness and aggression seem to just be deemed acceptable these days.

Your town sounds lovely, I am so envious! We live around nothing much really. I've got it in my head now that I want to move somewhere far away from the plastic grass brigade ASAP😂 moving is so stressful though, isn't it?

Thanks @JewelleryCat I love the merlin app and use it quite a lot! Thanks for the support as well (to everyone)

MewithME · 04/07/2026 21:23

Ah not actually my town but it's just as quick to go to the nice little town next to our town from where I live! 😊. Yes, there's a real disconnection from nature and it's not good for any of us. Glad they're introducing a natural history GCSE... At least it's being recognised that this is happening!

I have awful next door neighbours who are also plastic grass brigade people. I think there's a connection. People who are selfish and self centred seem to be disconnected from nature and the environment. I've stopped speaking to them because I'm so pissed off with them.

OP posts:
bedfrog · 05/07/2026 00:06

Yes I think you must be right @MewithME . I wonder if you are a nature person you can more readily accept you can't control everything that happens and that nature will inevitably do what it wants as it's much bigger and more important than humans or anything human-made.
I am so worried they will sabotage my precious plants for revenge or something now. Dh thinks I'm catastrophising!!!
Sorry you have the same issue. I wish we could all get along and be reasonable. I thought I was a perfect neighbour (we don't have parties or play music and are really boring, and I'm always in to take in parcels) but I suppose there's always something to complain about!

TeaAndStrumpets · 05/07/2026 09:08

Morning all!

Cooler today, although we're back to 30° later in the week. Sounds quite nice! I don't miss the really high temperatures though, it was too much of a good thing.

Today I'm going to check some storage boxes for moths. They've returned this year but not so many, so constant vigilance is needed! All my woollens are in bin bags in the back of the car, so hopefully any hidden moths will have been destroyed by the heat. Last year I spent a lot of time washing and freezing in batches, and binned several jumpers where I found any moth evidence.

Update! 2 boxes full of jumpers scarves etc were lurking on a high shelf. They've gone into the car now as well. A week at 30° outside temperature should sort them out, then I'll go through and have another cull. How many jumpers does anyone need? I'm so used to living in a freezing house!

JewelleryCat · 05/07/2026 09:27

You sound a lovely neighbour @bedfrog more people should be like you. I don’t like taking parcels in unless I knew them really well or were friendly with them lol

@TeaAndStrumpets which weather website do you use? I look at 3 and they all give me different temperatures for my area but either Wednesday or Thursday will be the hottest for me. The house hasn’t even cooled down yet and when I try to open the door, the breeze doesn’t come in plus bugs. Luckily, pest control are coming this week

I use the met office one because BBC is quite hit and miss.

I hope you get your wasp nest sorted. We had one in the attic once and the odd one did come into the house but were always dead when we found them. I suppose there's no food for them. It was amazing to see the empty nest, it was quite fascinating. We were told they build a new nest every year so once yours are gone they'll go elsewhere in the future.

MewithME · 05/07/2026 09:44

Ah...I've got ants! Luckily have some stuff to get rid of them from last time. What a faff. Ants and moths for @TeaAndStrumpets and @JewelleryCat has pest control coming. It's all a bit much when you're one of us!

It's amazing how much energy clearing up last night used. Had to blitz everything with ant killer and wash everything down so I didn't poison ourselves after 🙈

Feel shattered this morning. Didn't sleep too well. I must change DS sheets but everything else can be ignored today. I'm going to try and rest properly.

Morning all.

@bedfrog I am so sorry your neighbour is such an obnoxious cretin. Some people are just so urgh.
Would a camera covering your garden help allieviate any worries? Eufy do some, cheaper than Ring & no subscription needed. Uses your wifi & an app on your phone.

Ants, wasps & moths what a palaver. I hope you all are now ok for the rest of the summer.

We live on the edge of a village, woods nearby. Lots of trees in gardens & around as well. Constant birdsong in the background which is lovely.
We have an area at the side of the house with small trees & bushes. Sometimes get a hedgehog snuffling around there. So we try to leave that bit alone. Just a tidy up if it starts looking a bit too rustic 😁

@Dozymoo42 Your Dh is an absolute star!

MewithME · 05/07/2026 10:18

Morning @CoffeeBeansGalore ... seeing as you did a brilliant job of being my kind of personal shopper recently 😜... Did you mention a countertop ice maker..I think it was you? I've got bamboozled with choice and ratings. If there's one you can recommend for heatwave 3... Id be grateful. 🌞

@MewithME 🤣🤣🤣

Ours is an Aldi one from 2 (?) years ago. I had a quick look on Amazon before and there were several similar. I will have a good look & pop back later 😊

JewelleryCat · 05/07/2026 10:41

@TeaAndStrumpets I have a wasp phobia so hopefully I’ve got the pest control in early enough and then they can go elsewhere, hopefully not anywhere else in the roof! I’m glad you were told that because that wasn’t my experience in the past, they kept returning to the same place until we got the mortar fixed

I think it was more that they won't move into the same nest but of course loose mortar would tempt them to build nearby! Sounds like you've got a solution.

TeaAndStrumpets · 05/07/2026 11:09

@CoffeeBeansGalore I envy you having hedgehogs! We used to have them in our huge town garden but haven't seen one in decades so assume the changing surroundings being so built up around us has removed a lot of habitat.

I worry about robot lawn mowers reducing the population but hopefully the early problems have been resolved. The babies are so tiny!

Heatwave 3? Now I'm getting worried!

Gosh I would love a personal shopper sometimes.

Now it’s to find things to burn in the chimney while pest control is here so they don’t decide to fly down it! I hate them with a passion

But what sort of staff would you have? I vote for a housekeeper who keeps everything in order, a teetotal cook, a team of gardeners and more housemaids than you can shake a stick at. Most importantly, your old nanny who serves you out of loyalty and tells you sternly to pop into bed while she makes you a nice cup of hot milk. You will give them one half day off per month of course!

martha79 · 05/07/2026 12:03

Afternoon (well, very nearly). Sorry to hear about your horrible neighbour @bedfrog - encounters like that really shake you.

@MewithME I also have ants but can't use anything toxic because of the cats - I spray vinegar around where they've been getting in and it seems to have helped a bit. Also left some bits of banana outside one day and they had a feast on that and don't seem to have bothered with my kitchen so much lately!

Have spent this morning taking a couple of parcels to the drop off locker - I've been doing OK with Vinted sales and also have a load of Oxfam bags to send back to them, but having to do it one or two things at a time. Then taking photos of my bike (bought a few years ago and never really got into it, I hate riding on the road and I can't get out to countryside paths easily - and obviously don't have the energy now) to put up for sale along with some other fitness bits and pieces. I think that might need to be all the activity for today!

We used to use something called Deth Lac (I think) around the nest. Probably banned now!

It's a great time of year to sell a bike with school holidays coming up.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 05/07/2026 12:14

@MewithME okay here goes. Tesco have 2 which I would say are worth it.
The (originally) more expensive one is currently on a clubcard deal and therefore cheaper. The Pro Breeze counter top in grey. £64.99

2nd one Homcom £71.99.

Both are self cleaning. We remove the trays & clean in the sink & then activate the cleaning mode to give it a thorough clean.

2 sizes of ice cubes (bullet shaped) is convenient. The smaller ones slide easily into water bottles.

They will be rattly when dispensing. No avoiding it. But mainly just a hum whilst freezing.

Both free delivery & being a UK retailer guarantee /warranty shouldn't be an issue.

Unfortunately the Aldi one isn't available at the moment. Shame as it's good.
