Bluesky isn't banned for minors in Australia because the company itself has introduced restrictions for minors. If X and others did this, governments wouldn't need to legislate.
That might explain why the government can't give an answer yet. If Bluesky voluntarily introduce more (there are already some) age-related restrictions that meet government requirements there will be no need to ban it.
But it might be best to ban it anyway to shut the conspiracy theorists up.
As of 10 December 2025, Bluesky will introduce age assurance checks for users in Australia. This is in response to the Australian Government's social media age restrictions.
New users will be asked to complete an age check through Kids Web Services (KWS)External link.
Australian users under 16 will not be able to create a new Bluesky account. Australian users aged 16 and 17 will still be able to use Bluesky, but adult content will be inaccessible, and features like direct messaging will be disabled. Australian users aged 18 and over will have full access to Bluesky.
