I like hot weather, but this is too much unless you are in a villa somewhere with tiled floors and a pool! The next three days are going to be between 32 and 35 degrees.

I’m a hot weather enthusiast too, but it’s also very humid which is tiring. I slept well and am being ruthless with a rolling programme of curtain closures to keep the house from heating too much more.
I’d still pick this over low single figures or sub zero as that really does make me feel terrible, but this isn’t great either.

What's their take now ?

I may be wrong, but my feeling is that in MN land, no one regrets their vote (adds to list of reasons why we know MN is not real life).

I don't really see them these days not because of Brexit but because we moved not long after. It is never mentioned on the rare occasion we speak.

I would too, plus would prefer it to the endless pissing rain! But still, everyone in the red zone needs to be a bit careful. I am doing the same with blind and curtain closings.

I’m in red tomorrow and Thursday and right on the cusp today. I’m supposed to be at the gym later. Gym ow er will advise as the day goes on if it gets too hot for safety and will cancel the class if it’s too high. If he doesn’t, I’ll see how I feel.

Peter Murrell has been sentenced to five years and three months in jail after he admitted embezzling more than £400,000 from the Scottish National party while he was its chief executive.

There's no way Nicola didn't know....but then again, there's a lot that she still doesn't know.

There is an interesting parallel and timing with Donaldson and the Putney pusher ...

I have some very, very left wing friends, who voted leave. They thought the resulting ill effects would make the scales fall from the eyes of the proles, who would then turn against the establishment.

Which I suppose they did. But not in the expected direction.

Ah the Lexit faction. If I recall Mick Lynch the transport union boss was a big fan BC it would mean something about no capitalists. The quiet bit was probably a protection from EU workers driving down wages but he likely knew he couldn't say that. Then there was Corbyn who said his enthusiasm for remaining in the EU was 7 to 7 1/2 out of 10 but who'd previously slammed the EU as a threat to proper socialism. ( Source for ref https://www.channel4.com/news/factcheck/factcheck-corbyns-changing-brexit-stance)

You can see echoes of that with his chum Zarah Sultana in Your Party vowing to stay out of the hated capitalist enterprise that is the EU

I have been pondering why the right (and I don't include the far right in this) are so pleased Starmer has gone. It seems to me that one of two things will happen:

Burnham or a.n. other takes over and manages to turn things around for Labour, increasing their chances of winning the next election and the fight being Labour v Reform.

Burnham or a.n. other takes over and manages to mess things up even more for Labour, resulting in a Reform win at the next GE, especially if it comes sooner than 2029.

I can't see any advantage in any of this for the Tories. So why are they so pleased that Starmer has gone? Now there is a risk for the Tories that Labour could improve its polling.

I don’t think you understand how depressing Keir was. We also remember how awful he was during Covid. Calling for more stringent restrictions than Whitty and Vallance. His hypocrisy over Durham. Then we have the farm inheritance tax etc etc. I feel a weight lifted.

DuncinToffee · 23/06/2026 11:13

The DM is already advising people how to protect their money from Burnham and msm seems in a frenzy about who might be the next chancellor.

Lexit! That is the phrase.

I am certain Corbyn voted Leave. If he had confirmed that, it might have made a difference to how the Red Wall voted in 2019.

Fair enough. I felt the same when Johnson went. Hopefully what happened after that won't be repeated with Starmer's departure, though.

It’s not a party political point. I just don’t think Andy Burnham will be as tone deaf. He won’t be lecturing us to death.

pointythings · 23/06/2026 11:31

I am on the edge of the red warning zone, definitely using the curtains method. Fortunately my living room is north facing so it's all bearable so far.

Imagine siding with Farage, Johnson, Gove et al, to keep your principles 'pure'.

There's no way I could stomach that.

We have forgotten none of that. What we remember is the accurate version. He wanted quicker and harder restrictions, which the experience of other countries shows would have resulted in fewer deaths and shorter lockdowns. How you can say he was worse than what we had when they’ve been shown to have caused tens of thousands of deaths by their incompetence is mind blowing. Hypocrisy over Durham? Please explain? You can’t mean a legal meal while working rather than driving unnecessarily to Durham, moving about while there and then driving to check if your eyesight is good enough to drive? Can you? Can you? Surely not. You’re too intelligent for that, surely?
I know (and understand) your feelings on inheritance tax for farms, but also disagree - the exemption hasn’t been in place all that long in any case.

I have to be honest, Covid to me is like Brexit for others. It's happened. Get over it.

Tireless rehashing of the arguments around lockdowns or not isn't going to shift anyones opinons.

DS’s mental health was badly affected by all the restrictions as it was. Something changed forever. He is a ‘young person’ and detests KS. It’s personal. There’s not a single thing he has done that benefits my family.

Yes, all very well, but lessons to be learnt...

I think the thing some people may have forgotten is who was PM during Covid, and for the purposes of this thread, who was not.

Just for any new readers, Keir Starmer was leader of the opposition during Covid, and had no ability to influence government policy. Like the rest of us, he could not make the rules, only obey them.

It’s not rehashing arguments. It’s sadness at the life taken from young people and the abuse perpetrated against vulnerable children trapped with abusers.

Boris Johnson was just as bad but mainly because of his chaotic handling of the situation.

He wasn’t in power during Covid. It’s highly unlikely the IHT on farms will change.

And this is the fault of Keir Starmer how, exactly ?

If you want to hate everyone who called for firmer lockdowns. then you can add me to your hit list. I have zero problems saying I think we should have gone harder and faster.
