Darren who what now?

Apparently Darren Jones may be considering running for leader.

I doubt he could amass 81 letters somehow.

Haha, I felt I should have heard of him so I looked him up. Now I’ve closed the tab I’ve instantly forgotten him again, apart from the tantalising snippet that he’s a vegan who is sometimes vegetarian. So, a vegetarian then,

TemperanceWest · 22/06/2026 18:58

I heard it on LBC and it seems to stem from the Telegraph. So big pinch of 🧂

He’s the 21st century Attlee “An empty taxi pulled up outside Number 10, and out stepped Clement Attlee."

He has a Dutch wife (no, not me) that might upset some people.

👀 you are an Everton supporter as well, are you sure?

dontcallmelen · 22/06/2026 19:08

Is that the Darren who was very good on the media rounds a few weeks ago, if not never heard of him either.

He’s pretty good with the media. I like him aside from that though. He’s clear and direct and doesn’t take much shit.

Yes that's him

Always described as a 'close ally of Starmer'

Saucery · 22/06/2026 19:14

I suppose someone has to stand up and show a bit of token competition.

cardibach · 22/06/2026 19:15

I get t(e feeling (mainly from Threads) that he’s popular with the membership, many of whom do not like the way Burnham has acted. If I was still a member I’d probably vote for him absent a better option (which Burnham isn't]

TemperanceWest · 22/06/2026 19:28

When I saw Burnham joshing with his hecklers at his signing in, I had a little feeling of yeah, maybe he's not that bad. Then I saw this and had a rethink.

And here was me so hoping. Weeps into lacy handkerchief.

ETA. It's the handkerchief I kept from my First Holy Communion.

Shades of 'Blairs babes' x100 there Smile

Will there even be a woman in the cabinet? Yet another male Labour leader and Prime Minister.

My recent posts are for the lurkers who believe everything I post as the gospel truth.

Assuming the membership get a vote, dh will via his union membership. He is very unlikely to vote for Burnham, hopefully there will be someone decent in the competition.

Raven08 · 22/06/2026 19:56

As a half Irish person myself, I suspect the usual anti Irish shit will surface soon enough.
Plenty of anti Catholic feeling around too.
Anti everything that isnt white, protestant male, in fact.
I don't suppose there will be riots in Belfast tonight re: JD

Raven08 · 22/06/2026 19:57

@cardibach
I gave up my membership long ago...
I'd vote for whoever isn't AB tbh

DuncinToffee · 22/06/2026 19:59

I have seen people mention Darren Jones, he seem highly rated but maybe too inexperienced.

To vote for a new leader, membership of the party must be more than six months.

So existing members only. It won't come to that though.

Raven08 · 22/06/2026 20:17

I'm not planing on re joining @placemats

You don't think there'll be a contest?
I'm not saying you're wrong but I think the optics of that are very poor
