You don't think there'll be a contest?
I'm not saying you're wrong but I think the optics of that are very poor

Why?

There can’t be a contest if nobody else stands.

A Labour party MP can stand but they need the backing and support of over 80 MPs. That's the rules.

TemperanceWest · 22/06/2026 21:43

I have been pondering why the right (and I don't include the far right in this) are so pleased Starmer has gone. It seems to me that one of two things will happen:

Burnham or a.n. other takes over and manages to turn things around for Labour, increasing their chances of winning the next election and the fight being Labour v Reform.

Burnham or a.n. other takes over and manages to mess things up even more for Labour, resulting in a Reform win at the next GE, especially if it comes sooner than 2029.

I can't see any advantage in any of this for the Tories. So why are they so pleased that Starmer has gone? Now there is a risk for the Tories that Labour could improve its polling.

Some people, and it's not a lot, maybe 50,000 in England, still pine for the Conservative Party pre Boris Johnson as leader. He implemented the 'night of the long knives' policy in order to get his dud Brexit oven ready done deal.

Raven08 · 22/06/2026 22:04

It seems all "done and dusted" if AB stands unopposed.
I don't care which party it is, thats undemocratic.
Begs the question why have members and an executive?
I'm probably in a minority, but none of this sits well with me.

placemats · 22/06/2026 22:12

Fair enough. Do you think there should be a general election now?

If nobody else stands there is nothing to be done. But that approach didn't end well for Brown or Sunak. Although Brown might have been OK if he had called a GE earlier.

BIossomtoes · 22/06/2026 22:21

It was never going to end well for Sunak and Blair got out in the nick of time.

Brown needed to join other world leaders in sorting out the banking collapse. Thank goodness he stayed. Couldn't have seen lazy Etonian arse Cameron doing that - George was high on the sniff.

@TemperanceWest
I've always thought that labour would have won if GB had called a GE. Blair was so toxic by then and there was a (brief) honeymoon period

Agree, but I think the very fact of having an election then would have been quite dangerous to the economy etc at a time of considerable difficulty. So in a sense Brown was putting country before politics. Which hurt him in the end.

Yes, I agree
I think history will judge him kindly

I really hope so. Brown is a very decent man.

What is the weather like with everyone? It is too warm to sleep yet here. 22 degrees but feels like 27 🥵

BIossomtoes · 22/06/2026 23:33

I agree. Highly intelligent, highly competent and compassionate, probably the best chancellor we’ve ever had.

I feel wretched

BIossomtoes · 22/06/2026 23:38

Really hot here. Hence still up and about.

TemperanceWest · 22/06/2026 23:42

I like hot weather, but this is too much unless you are in a villa somewhere with tiled floors and a pool! The next three days are going to be between 32 and 35 degrees.

placemats · 22/06/2026 23:53

Rain, thunder and lightning has stopped play in France v Iraq.

Recommend a watch of tonight's edition of Newsnight. Victoria Atkins was clearly the embarrassing lightweight.

Peaked at 22 here, today. About 3 seconds of sunshine. Not disappointed, though my washing was still damp at tea time.
