Excellent speech (link for anyone who missed it). Very good framing of the situation - and yet people say he’s not a good politician… 🤷‍♀️
Very dignified and human. I hope Burnham hears that list of achievements and is ashamed of some of the things he’s said.

@BIossomtoes I don’t think anyone could unite the PLP. Some of them, to quote Frank Turner, seem to be locked inside some kind of 60s battle re-enactment.

Angliangirl · 22/06/2026 10:20

Good riddance Starmer.

Reeves next.

Notonthestairs · 22/06/2026 10:21

Good speech.

There will now be a campaign to insist on a GE.
Neither the Tories nor Reform actually want an election.
The Tories are skint and haven't thrown off the legacy of the last decade.
Reform have the money but simply don't have the quality of candidates to cope with a GE (see last week).

Its simply an attempt to undermine the next leader.

There will need to be a leadership election of some sorts (even if Burham is the only candidate) as LP requires it for a change of leader.

Thank god for this thread.

I hope you dont mind me posting but Starmer is a decent man, who has been unfairly treated. For him to leave after less than two years in office, makes little sense to me.

Obsessed.
How weird.

What I have never been unable to understand is the view of Starmer by those who profess their dislike of him and of what he has or hasn't done, is that his character is somehow malicious, uncaring, self-serving and elitist. I've been disappointed in most PM's (including Labour) in my lifetime but the only PM who deserves those adjectives is Johnson.

I agree, I find the endless character assassination of Prime Ministers insane and disheartening. Most of them have been pretty decent people, even if I’ve not agreed with their politics or with specific policies. I also agree that Johnson has been the only recent PM whose actual character struck me as deeply problematic for the nation and its institutions.

There are a lot of trade offs in leadership though, which it feels like the average adult of all political flavours is finding it harder and harder to accept. Leading in the private sector is much more straightforward and has far less blowback in comparison!

BIossomtoes · 22/06/2026 10:24

Not entirely unexpected. We predicted a visitation.

I know. It is most odd. Perhaps pp needs some therapy.

I raise you Liz Truss!

Agree to an extent - Truss was problematic. As her most recent career development has highlighted.

Time for @TemperanceWest’s gif, methinks.

Nigel Farage has called for an election. He claims that it is “ridiculous to pretend that Andy Burnham has any kind of meaningful mandate to lead the country.”

Oh the irony from the bone idle and work shy MP

Fortunately nobody important will pay attention to that request 😁

placemats · 22/06/2026 10:43

Zack Polanski, not an MP, also presumes Burnham will be leader. His sage advice is "Burnham must be bold or he will be bust."

BIossomtoes · 22/06/2026 10:44

Farage would absolutely shit himself if a GE was called now. Can he seriously not remember what happened on Friday?

pointythings · 22/06/2026 10:46

I am so sorry for your loss, @Evenstar .

Wrt to Starmer, we might as well just give up and let the tabloids on the right run the country for a few years. Maybe if the unfashionable see the fuckups that will result, they'll finally learn.

I hope Burnham adopts a fuck the lot of you approach and uses his majority to do some more radical and left stuff.

No, I'm not angry #lying.

SerendipityJane · 22/06/2026 10:46

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 22/06/2026 10:42

Fortunately nobody important will pay attention to that request 😁

No. But it will infect the news cycle and allow the world of the far right to peddle the story that poor old Nige has been stitched up by an establishment who fears a real man of the people

It helps to repeat the mantra "It's not all about me" when looking at "news". Because most of the time it really isn't. It's for the less fashionable - like the posters on this thread who had to ask a grown up what some words meant.

TemperanceWest · 22/06/2026 10:46

Badenough being her usual utterly graceless self🙄

If we need the Tories so much, why did they do so badly on the local and by-elections?
