I have never been Starmer's biggest fan, but I do think he is fundamentally a decent man. I am very sad. It didn't have to be like this.

This totally agree.
@Evenstar my sincere condolences for the loss of your husband, sending much love & strength 💕 xx

DuncinToffee · 22/06/2026 09:39

Me too @Cheguevarahamster

People who listen to "The Long View" are invited to ponder similarities with Edens departure nearly three quarters of a century ago.

I don't know why, but there are certain cadences.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 22/06/2026 09:40

I'm so sorry to hear the news about your husband @Evenstar. My condolences and best wishes. This kind of news does put everything else into perspective. 💐

dapsnotplimsolls · 22/06/2026 09:40

I just caught the last bit - I wasn't expecting him to choke up 😞

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/06/2026 09:40

For fuck’s sake

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/06/2026 09:42

Sorry @Evenstar i hadn’t read back. So sorry to hear about your husband. Take care.

Raven08 · 22/06/2026 09:44

My condolences @Evenstarx

Me neither. I can't imagine what his wife has been put through, all the shit that has been said about her being a beard etc.😡

I wonder if he is relieved in some ways?

Very sensible to have the contest over recess. Let the games begin!

Raven08 · 22/06/2026 09:45

I'm sad to see KS resigning.
I do believe he is a decent man. And he won the GE for labour.
This whole thing leaves a very bad taste in my mouth

placemats · 22/06/2026 09:46

That was a great speech and I had something in my eye at the end. The Cheers and claps were heartwarming.

BestIsWest · 22/06/2026 09:47

That’s made me very sad. He sounded very emotional when talking about his wife.

SpottyAlpaca · 22/06/2026 09:48

I sympathise with Keir. I voted for this government & wanted it to succeed. He did his best in what has become an impossible job.

Yes, he should have been much bolder in using his massive majority to force through change. Yes, he has made mistakes, but many of them have been blown completely out of proportion by a hysterical media which is addicted to constant chaos. He deserves better than being kicked out by panicking MPs who owe their jobs to him. I wish him well.

LittleBowSheep · 22/06/2026 09:48

@EvenstarVery sorry to hear about your husband.

Evenstar · 22/06/2026 09:48

I am sure he is relieved, it will be good for him and his family to have a summer break of some sort with the media focussed on digging dirt on Andy Burnham and anyone else who throws their hat into the ring.

He did, didn't he?

Ditto.

KS is a decent human being, I hope he stays in politics.

@Evenstar So sorry to hear your about your DH. 💐

TemperanceWest · 22/06/2026 09:51

Bloody hell, I feel a lot sadder than I expected to.☹️

LizzieW1969 · 22/06/2026 09:52

I’m so sorry about the loss of your husband, @Evenstar.

Re this morning’s events, I felt such empathy for Keir Starmer today. He’s a fundamentally decent man and I’m really sad that it’s come to this point after only 2 years.

Having said that, there was no option in the end. Let’s hope there’s now an orderly leadership contest with proper debate.

cardibach · 22/06/2026 09:52

Angliangirl · 22/06/2026 09:04

Thank god for this thread.

I hope you dont mind me posting but Starmer is a decent man, who has been unfairly treated. For him to leave after less than two years in office, makes little sense to me.

I completely agree

cardibach · 22/06/2026 09:58

So sorry for your loss @Evenstar

Totally agree with @TemperanceWest and @SpottyAlpaca . I think it shows great resilience that he hasn’t told everyone to fuck off long ago. Hope he has a good summer and can evaluate clearly what he wants to do next.
Burnham is abput to discover that the press don’t really want him to be PM in a very forceful way I suspect. Careful what you wish for and all that.

TheOnlyMrsW · 22/06/2026 10:00

A really good speech, I'm sad to see him go. I like Andy Burnham but cross at the way this has come about.

So sorry for your loss @Evenstar x

Spandauer · 22/06/2026 10:01

What I have never been unable to understand is the view of Starmer by those who profess their dislike of him and of what he has or hasn't done, is that his character is somehow malicious, uncaring, self-serving and elitist. I've been disappointed in most PM's (including Labour) in my lifetime but the only PM who deserves those adjectives is Johnson.

Zonder · 22/06/2026 10:02

I agree with you @Evenstar and I'm sorry for your loss.

BIossomtoes · 22/06/2026 10:07

Excellent speech. I was pleased to see him accept the inevitable in such a dignified way. I was also pleased that his wife was away from the cameras and we didn’t have to watch her pain unlike Samantha Cameron and Akshata Murty.

He did transform the Labour Party and make it electable and all credit to him for achieving that. He couldn’t unite the PLP in power though and that’s essential for a PM no matter how big the majority.
