Will he really be going today?

I agree with you @Zonder and @cardibach

Would this all even be happening if it wasn't for bloody Mandelson?

Mandelson was the straw that broke the camel’s back. My disappointment was almost instantaneous when the free clothes and glasses headlined, accepting those was such a rookie error. Starmer has been a very poor politician domestically and an excellent one internationally, unfortunately that isn’t enough. I don’t think he’s got any option other than resigning today. In an ideal world he’d take over the Foreign Office but I suspect his pride won’t allow that and it wouldn’t surprise me if there was a by-election in Holborn some time soon.

TemperanceWest · 22/06/2026 08:30

I think you might be right about a by-election BIossomtoes.

Oh well. At least he will be spared the drowned rat look.

Agreed - I was so annoyed when the free glasses story broke. This was such an elementary failing of good judgement on his part, and smacked of nothing changing from the previous Tory 'noses in the trough' regime. It only appeared to differ in scale...

Angliangirl · 22/06/2026 09:04

Thank god for this thread.

I hope you dont mind me posting but Starmer is a decent man, who has been unfairly treated. For him to leave after less than two years in office, makes little sense to me.

I agree he would be a good Foreign Secretary but resignation as an MP in a few months is possible.

Evenstar · 22/06/2026 09:16

It has made me feel very sad that it has come to this. My DH passed away last month, he spent many hours canvassing for Labour before the 2024 election, we both folded leaflets and I made cakes for the local headquarters to keep morale up for the canvassers.

Keir Starmer is fundamentally a decent man and DH was very upset when calls for him to resign started over the Mandelson affair, there have been poor choices and too much drift to the right, but we don’t need to return to Tory chaos and constantly changing Prime Minister. I feel sad on behalf of so many people who worked so hard to deliver that victory in 2024.

DuncinToffee · 22/06/2026 09:16

Media is reporting that the podium is out at 10 DS

Let's just get it over with now.

There will be plenty of analysis to come.

There's no doubting Starmer's legacy as Leader of the Labour party.

Can't see him resigning as an MP.

I am so sorry to hear about your husband @Evenstar Flowers

@Evenstar I am so, so sorry to hear about your DH Flowers I hope you have people around you who are giving support and comfort.

rockstarshoes · 22/06/2026 09:22

I’m feeling really sad about this!
Like others I’ve been disappointed by the glasses, the WFA, Mandalson but I still think Starmer was a safe pair of hands.

placemats · 22/06/2026 09:22

Can totally understand the frustration @Evenstar as I took worked hard with leafletting and door knocking. Always proud to have a stake outside the house. Jubilant at the massive victory as well.

So sorry to hear about the loss of your husband 🌹

Notonthestairs · 22/06/2026 09:24

Im really sorry to read the loss of your husband @Evenstar

dapsnotplimsolls · 22/06/2026 09:26

It's a shame but I just don't think he's a very good politician. Mandelson was the final nail in the coffin.

Lord Starmer would tick both boxes ....

@Evenstar I am so, so sorry about your husband. 💐

TemperanceWest · 22/06/2026 09:34

I have never been Starmer's biggest fan, but I do think he is fundamentally a decent man. I am very sad. It didn't have to be like this.

Borntobeamum · 22/06/2026 09:35

He’s just resigned.

Cheguevarahamster · 22/06/2026 09:39

Very good speech. Such a decent man. He got emotional when talking about his wife and kids. I shed a tear. Lets hope that he gets a rest soon and can play five aside football and spend time with his kids.

DuncinToffee · 22/06/2026 09:39

That was a good speech
