Observer reporting that Starmer is expected to resign on Monday. Sad but inevitable.

Expected by whom?

I think when one ahs read the parliamentary report into bullying in the labour party and the treatment of Diane Abbott , one realises that Keir Starmer is just as capable of 'tactics' and positioning and conniving as the rest of them.

I think seeing Burnham as a backstabber and Keir as some kind of wounded pure soul is probably naive.

I'm the rare find on MN of a Corbynite - Starmer did an awful lot of politicking to remove him (many people say rightly so : notwithstanding , tactics were deployed). Perhaps no one cares much about that because 'But Corbyn'.

I know that there's a line of thought that the constant changing of PMs under the Tories (and now potentially under Labour was destabilising) and obviously it isn't great. But just as bad IMO is the constant reshuffles every five seconds when the PM wants to freshen things up. It means ministers have just got the hang of their briefs when they're moved on and nothing gets the attention it needs. In a sense Burnham replacing Starmer but not sacking the entire cabinet would be less destabilising than one PM for four years and constant reshuffles.

Will certain posters think we're disloyal fangirls if/when another name appears on our thread titles? 🤔

Only the truly dim.

Oh a lurker predicted we will all become unthinkingly loyal Burnham fans. 🙄

If and when we do have a Burnham thread, could we consider The King in the North Arises? It is a bit tongue in cheek (Google it and Walder Frey if you are not a Game of Thrones fan!), but sort of apt as the press will try to slaughter AB no doubt.

Excellent. They will lose easily if true.

Maybe Yusuf should put his money where his ugly mouth is and stand?

Guardian and others now also reporting that Starmer will be announcing his resignation tomorrow.

He has made some big mistakes, but I can't help feeling a bit sorry for him.

I don't see that he has much choice really.

I don't like what Burnham has done and I really don't think he's going to achieve anything more. The press are still going to hate him just because he's Labour.

In my opinion this whole thing has just been a waste of time and a boost for Burnham's ego. Very Tory.

They can't lurk very hard. Cardi and raven at the very least don't seem to profess to be Burnhamites! Grin

Zonder · 21/06/2026 10:30

I've been very disappointed in this labour government and some of the decisions they've made which have impacted the poor and vulnerable in society. However I'm always more disappointed in the MSM and how they have completely ignored any good the government have made. Starmer has been a steady hand and we needed that after the chaos of the Tories.
I liked AB but not how he has behaved lately. I just hope he gives Starmer a cabinet position but I suspect he won't as he will want to pretend he is a new broom.

Piggywaspushed · 21/06/2026 10:31

I think it may drive some on MN wild with rage when they eventually realise that Burnham is well liked amongst ordinary people (see : Makerfield). I man, obviously, we'll see what happens there once he is in charge. But there may be some envy there that Labour have found someone with charisma.

Hence their busy-ness in informing everyone that Burnham is somewhere to the left of Pol Pot.

You can add me to that list! I don't like what he's done one bit and think he has put his ego first as @LittleBowSheep says.

I think their intense hate for Starmer has completely clouded their judgement.

It will be very interesting to see Burnham v Badenoch at PMQs.

But we don't welcome rabid racists on our thread, which I feel is a strong point in our favour.😊

It's a great article that is sympathetic to Starmer and his excellent achievements, primarily getting Labour into power - Burnham wouldn't be in the position he is now without that legacy.

Streeting should stay on the back benches and let the smooth transition take it's natural course. Deals 'my arse', as Jim Royale would say.

Yes it is a really good article. It’s all very sad, I’ve always liked Starmer.

That’s hilarious. He’s the Blairiest of Blairites - at least that’s what his previous government actions tell us. (And no, I’m not a fan and can’t see me ever being unless he’s undergone a massive change as mayor)
