What’s the strangest reason someone has got cross with you on MN?

When I was new to MN I used a way of phrasing something that is very common in my local dialect. To the point that I still can’t figure out what was wrong with how I phrased it. However rather than answering my thread there was just a pile on about my typing.

Another time someone became very angry that I said I worked at a school with a farm. I did at the time. But they were so angry that I might have “outed” my self. I’ve never put anything on here that I would be embarrassed people in my life finding out so I don’t know why they were so worried for me!

Only on Mumsnet would people be frothing that you didn’t give a house away for free… absolute batshittery!

I know right? even for performative "kindness" thats absolutely batshit.

youalright · 29/05/2026 08:31

I was told i was wrong for helping a young suicidal relative and that she was just attention seeking

Simonjt · 29/05/2026 08:31

I, a sikh, gave my son a centuries old traditional sikh hairstyle. The poster sent me several abuses PMs saying I was disgusting for putting my sons hair in a bun and for suggesting the OP of the thread I was on could put their daughters hair in a bun. The poster then decided my son must be imaginery, but also randomly decided I had multiple children that I purchased from a cousin in India (I would like to visit India one day, fairly certain I won’t be buying children from a cousin who doesn’t exist).

They then started a thread on reddit saying my son was imaginery and wrote some fairly strong anti-sikh comments. When others pointed this out they edited their post and pretended their anti-sikh comments weren’t about sikhism at all and they were the innocent party. Oh they also said I had a hord of cats that I abuse, I mean I do have a cat who feels they are a victim of abuse when I’m late with dreamies.

It was all very bizarre.

BlindSpotForCats · 29/05/2026 08:32

I remember a poster being told that she should give a house she inherited to the sitting tenant as it would be the kind thing to do @fancypantstoday instead of selling it. So that peak batshittery is definitely about.

Chemenger · 29/05/2026 08:32

I have had many accusations of lying because I used to be involved with university recruitment and selection. Apparently I had no idea how the selection process in my own department, which I oversaw, worked. In the end I found the Higher Education section so hostile to academics that I pretty much stopped posting there.
Another very angry woman, who knew everything about engineering work placements because her husband was an engineer, kept telling me I was wrong about those too, even though I was an engineering lecturer for three decades.

Devilsmommy · 29/05/2026 08:35

Got called an evil psychopath because I hoover up spiders🤣🤣🤣

Ah yes, it wasnt that thread, I actually remember that one!

It was on another more recent thread about landlords being the scum of the earth and I said I had inherited my nan's home and rented it out to a single mum on benefits - what was wrong with that? and I got told there were more kind and ethical options I could have picked such as giving it away.

Yeah, not doing that thanks!

CryptoFascist · 29/05/2026 08:37

Not cross exactly but someone got weird when (in context, I swear!) I posted that my BMI was 22. They kept posting implying that I was fat and that my DH might think I was fat. I got the impression they were a competitive MN thinny who was horrified that anyone would admit to having a BMI of more than 19.

YouPromisedToStopPosting · 29/05/2026 08:37

I posted my view on an “is it ok to wear PJs to the supermarket” type thread. I was perfectly polite and my response was in line with the prevailing opinion on the thread.

One particular poster targeted my posts in an increasingly unhinged manner. I decided that continuing to engage probably wasn’t that good for her so said that I would bow out of the thread.

She continued to make nasty comments designed to pull me back in and when that didn’t work started PMing me nasty comments.

It was years ago now but still remains the oddest exchange I’ve ever had. So much rage, about pyjamas.

BeardySchnauzer · 29/05/2026 08:38

It’s amazing how some threads get derailed because one person picks on another persons answer and decides they are the devil incarnate and need to be hounded

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 29/05/2026 08:38

Apparently I was not paying tax because I asked a question about my spare room. Bizzarre

BlindSpotForCats · 29/05/2026 08:39

The Landlord threads become insane. I'm the scum of the earth according to many on MN because not only am I a Landlord, I privately educate my child. Sometimes I do wonder why I stay. I flounced after the episode where I got attacked for enjoying a particular dish but the lure of it keeps bringing me back.

Littledidsheknow · 29/05/2026 08:41

All the rage directed at me has probably been justified, but I do recall the homeless man and “you should give yourself house away” threads!

Been a while since I’ve seen such entertaining unhingedness on here!

MegMortimer · 29/05/2026 08:43

I once said I liked Charlotte Tilbury mascara on a H&B thread about mascara. Someone responded to my post, raging that EVERYONE knew that CT was useless!

Isn’t it odd that those same posters don’t give their own homes away. We had a holiday home in the UK, it couldn’t legally be used as a permanent dwelling and we had a limit of how many nights per year it could be occupied. I explained this clearly and in great deal, but someone still couldn’t understand that a building that can only be occupied for 250 days a year isn’t suitable as a permanent home. Apparently renting it for free to children in care for a good chunk of those days made me a selfish bastard.

Biffsboys · 29/05/2026 08:43

A few people got cross at me because I done my 18year olds washing and ironing .

Yep, thats what irritates me the most about it- you know damn well they wouldnt ever be giving away their house but it's so easy to be generous with someone else's money isnt it? 🙄

Stardancerintheskye · 29/05/2026 08:47

I was badly bullied as a child by both other kids and teachers

Some idiot on here told me to get in touch with the bullies and ask why they did what they did

I dont think so,but this op doubled down and insisted I did

Thankfully, others stood up for me and she backed off

Another time,(I cant remember if it was the same thread) I wrote about a work colleague who was a bully at school-she was so bad, some of my other colleagues who'd been at school with her, where forced to leave the school and one had to move house to get away from her

Bully was finding out that school was a different place to the work place and people wouldn't put up with her behaviour

I stood up to her (and so did some of my colleagues) not in a bullying way (I've never bullied anyone in my life) but more 'your not cosying up to the headmaster anymore, your at work and need to behave yourself or get into trouble'

Well, that set someone off and apparently I was the bully for sticking up to this coward (when the penny dropped you cant walk up to people, belt them around the head/start nasty rumours/boss people/your boss around and start screaming when they refuse to follow your orders and then expect a cozy chat in the office with a manager with a hot chocolate) and this person followed me around mumsnet, picking apart every post I wrote until I ruined her fun and changed my username

I often wonder if it was either her (unlikely) or one of her parents,as they'd taken it very personally

AlgaeDreams · 29/05/2026 08:48

Someone told me that I was a rude and that I clearly frighten other posters.
Said 'pister' was author @JD Kirk after I was obsessing over something Neish🤣 He came on (legend), had a chat and said to another poster, tongue in cheek, something along the lines of - not algae... She frightens me...

And hence my scary persona was outed! I'm terrible!

Love you @JD Kirk. I'm sat outside your house right now... I know you live in the East Midlands 🤣 Cooeee!

I'm the fat vegan too.

I was once on a dinnner thread and said I was making a particular ethnic dish which was a family staple when I was growing up. One poster got really upset with me about 'cultural appropriation' and attacked me over the entire thread, to the point I had private messages from other posters saying WTF??!!.

She didn't ask me if I were from that culture (Im not, not that it matters, I'm allowed to enjoy the food) - just attacked me for having the utter nerve to enjoy and make a particular dish.

Now I really want to know and have the recipe for that dish. Please share. 😊
I love ethnic food (I’m from an ethnic minority so if your deranged responder sees this, she can calm the hell down).

Got called an evil psychopath because I hoover up spiders🤣🤣🤣

LOL I remember that thread, also how it's 'cruel' to put those big hairy spiders outside in winter because they'd die - they really don't, they find nice little nooks around one's property to lodge (upturned plant pots, I'm looking at you)! A lot of folk on that thread were angry at 'cruelty' to arachnids!

YouRemindMeOfAYoungerMe · 29/05/2026 07:27

I got told off on a weight loss thread, when I said I’d like to find a vegan version of whatever diet was being recommended. I was told in no uncertain terms by one poster that there was NO WAY a vegan could be remotely overweight, as they are all thin and probably undernourished. Ummmm… I was that fat vegan! Hmm

I’ve had people rage at me for being vegan on here numerous times and it’s not like I was one of those annoying vegans who act all superior! Oh and I’ve definitely had overweight periods as a vegan too.

CrocsNotDocs · 29/05/2026 08:51

I wrote a lighthearted OP about my DH caring for my cat solo for a few days and whinging that the cat didn’t show any gratitude, despite his attempts to win him over.

Cue poster stating that my DH was controlling and she feared for my children.

I ill advisedly uses the phrase pram nazi and it did not go well.

I can see the righteous indignation in my mind😂
