My flat isn't new build (I think they're maybe 50-60 or so years old?) but for example earlier in the week, it was about 20 degrees outside and relatively cool, but inside it was still nearly 29 degrees and it took several days of all the windows being wide open to get rid of all the built up heat inside it. I just looked it up and it has a C energy rating with pretty well-rated wall insulation, double glazing etc...so no wonder they hold the heat in!

My friend has a weather station in his flat and a few weeks ago it was reading 19c outside and 27c inside. 1960s build

EmeraldRoulette · 30/06/2026 20:42

Yeah, when I say "that type of build" I mean just any build that holds in heat to a ridiculous extent and stops air circulating

I had to look into a lot of stuff about building because of soundproofing issues and it's really the luck of the draw to a large extent

JenniferBooth · 30/06/2026 23:14

Im pouring with Sanctuary sweat Off for a cold bath soon and to dunk my head under the water.

PinkHollyhocks · 01/07/2026 07:04

I've sooooo enjoyed the last couple of days in Sussex. Cool nights. Sunny/ cloudy days of 20-23 degrees. It's been fabulous. I've continued to have all the windows open even though it's chilly. It's so refreshing.

the80sweregreat · 01/07/2026 08:40

It’s been nice here since Monday and I was even a little bit cold last night. I know it won’t last though ;(

Lottapianos · 01/07/2026 08:49

I know @PinkHollyhocks , I feel like my nervous system has had a little holiday in the past few days! The relentless heat and sun is so bloody stressful

the80sweregreat · 01/07/2026 08:55

The mega hot weather makes me feel really on edge and it is stressful just dealing with it.

JenniferBooth · 01/07/2026 17:14

Riddle me this. Loads of threads about school kids on here getting heat stroke in classrooms but i havent seen posters scrabbling around making excuses on those threads insisting that those kids must have had underlying health conditions and nor have i seen posts saying that its not the fault of the buildings. In fact ive seen completely the opposite
Yet when it involves overheating social housing its a complete about turn vice versa. So another one to add to the MN hypocrisy list

Still like an oven in here. Ive just remembered,,,,,,,,,,,there used to be a tree on the patch of grass near my bedroom window. The tenant opposite complained about the branches getting in the window so instead of cutting the branches back and then coming back to do that when needed, THEY FELLED THE WHOLE TREE So a source of shading destroyed by Sanctuary Housing Association because they are lazy and tight and couldnt be bothered. Along with the other things they have done to turn this place into a sweatbox

That is so typical of housing associations. Platform would do the same thing. Absolute arseholes

No one questions kids getting heat stroke in hot classrooms and when another mum posts about how hot her kids classroom gets no one tells her that it has nothing to do with it. But thats what ive been told

That is horrific. I have a big old hornbeam tree in my courtyard garden that provides wonderful shade and is a haven for wildlife.
Its the only tree in this cul de sac that hasn't been raised to the ground.
The neighbours are always moaning about it but they can get to fuck.
The tree is staying.

railcardfan · 02/07/2026 07:02

Why are your neighbours complaining about your tree? I'm lucky; on the estate where I live we all have lots of trees in our gardens.

People hate trees these days. They say they block their light and they dont like the leaves falling, they dont like bird droppings or the noise the pigeons make in it. There are so many estates with no trees now.
People want plastic grass and paving everywhere.

Yep, it's ignorance as well; trees lower the surrounding temperature and provide shade, but some of my neighbours just think they're untidy and want them cut down. Most of our neighbours have paved over their gardens or put gravel down.

railcardfan · 02/07/2026 09:28

Wow, that's really sad to hear. Trees provide wonderful shade and keep the temperature lower, as well as looking lovely.

MoonlightMemories · 02/07/2026 15:56

What the heck? Some people have got really strange attitudes towards trees! I of all people ought to hate them because every year various types of them cause me horrific hayfever symptoms for half the year.... I know how important they are for wildlife and the environment, amongst other things, but I wouldn't dare suggest my council goes around felling them all! That would be completely unhinged! 🤣

EmeraldRoulette · 02/07/2026 21:06

Forecast for next week is all over the shop

Most people are saying very hot though

But today was forecast to be 25 in My area

I think officially they have now said it was 28

But when I went out at lunchtime, people were using umbrellas for the sun. That's unusual. I don't know why the figures are so wrong at the moment.

the80sweregreat · 02/07/2026 21:11

I like the parasol umbrellas! However, the thought of more hot dusty heat is depressing:(

EmeraldRoulette · 02/07/2026 21:20

@the80sweregreat oh sure they're nice

But my point is, the forecast is completely wrong. And also I don't think it was 28. It was meant to be 25 and I think it was more like 30.

25 is a nice day and I would still be carrying around a jacket or a cardigan because I'm a weirdo who really feels the cold!

28 is a bit much

Today was really hot.

I don't know - I might have thought maybe my internal thermostat broke because of living in a flat that doesn't let go of heat, but when I saw people using umbrellas, I thought oh it's not just me.

Everyone in the building complains of course, but that's bound to happen in these flats.

the80sweregreat · 02/07/2026 21:23

I thought it was hot today and felt a bit poorly ( had to go out in it briefly )
I jusy hope it doesn’t go back to the horrendous temperatures it was the other week

PerhapsaSillyQuestion · 02/07/2026 21:52

Do we have any ideas what to expect next week ? The highest around me is 33 now.

the80sweregreat · 02/07/2026 21:56

They are being a bit vague around temperatures next week.

Gettingbysomehow · 02/07/2026 23:00

Summer is now over and it will rain until sutumn. I know this becsuse I have just bought three lovely summer dresses and jinxed the weather.

Delatron · 03/07/2026 07:02

Temperatures are vague for next week and different reports say different things. There’s a huge difference between a high of 28/29 and 32/33. In terms of my day once we hit early to mid 30s I have to get up super early to take the dog out. If it’s still around 21/22 degrees at 9ish then that’s ok for the dog.

Also I think the media have been sensationalising things which hasn’t helped. High 20s is hot but not that unusual for summer in the south. Mid 30s is awful and does need the warnings.
