My area's next week forecast keeps changing as to which day is going to be the hottest at 31c.

baroqueandblue · 03/07/2026 12:38

Different weather apps saying different things for next week. Highest BBC app goes is 29, but the Met Office app is saying 32 on Monday and 31 on Thursday. Greater London.

Obvs praying the BBC wins!! 🙏

Yeah, BBC weather saying 30°c for us on Wed, Accuweather saying 26°c. I hope Accuweather are right!!

I’m going on Friday. But my app says 28 which is ok.

EmeraldRoulette · 03/07/2026 21:41

I thought today was really hot

I don't know - maybe my brain really is broken from living in this flat. It already seems like it's been an incredibly hot summer and it's only the 3rd of July. If you compare it to last year's heat waves we had breaks in between. It now just looks like it's going to be really hot for the next 10 days and that's only as far as the forecast goes. I know for it to be declared a heat wave it has to go over a certain temperature, but the daytime seems really really hot here in Essex.

the80sweregreat · 03/07/2026 21:48

Essex is a hot county isn’t it and I know my son in his flat is struggling with it all too.
I want see days of rain and moisture

EmeraldRoulette · 03/07/2026 21:57

I had two layers of curtains before

Maybe that was more useful in protecting the flat from heat than I realised?

truth be told I was meant to sort something else out, a lot of flats here have shutters and what not, but I ran out of time because I was planning to sort it in March, and then I went away and then I had various other dramas. It's always a mission to get stuff done in here because I can't do it myself. I can't get on ladders due to vertigo. So it was something that I would've had to have booked in with a local tradesmen and the time just got away from me.

Or maybe the forecast is just totally off - years of experience of living in a hot flat has told me what can and can't be done

there's still an argument about whether or not I need to bother because there will be more than six weeks lead time for that kind of thing.

curtains can't help you with no air movement either.

sorry I realise I'm just chatting out loud but I'm puzzled that there are more people complaining about it. Normally, my WhatsApp group is full of complaints 😂

A lot of people having to plan their day around what time their dog can be walked though.

the80sweregreat · 03/07/2026 22:10

You don’t see that many houses in the Uk with shutters , but I bet it becomes a thing and you’ll see more of them now. I did look into air con, but the cost of running it put me off. I’d love to have it, but we already pay a lot for utilities and I can’t justify the cost.
This may change , but so far I’ll have to grin and bear it I suppose :(

Whyohwhy321 · 04/07/2026 09:03

Hannah Fry talked about this recently. She said its pointless closing the windows and blinds/curtains, as the heat is already in the room and you're simply trapping it inside. External protection is the only way to keep the heat out, so shutters, sails, reflective material etc.

I try to get the temperature down overnight as much as possible by opening up all the doors and windows and then early in the morning, close the doors and windows and cover the outside of my patio doors with my homemade heat shields (foil bubble wrap!). It does work!

I can’t reach upstairs so just go with the curtains closed method and windows open a crack when not in direct sunlight.

That matches with my experiences last week - I had them shut on most of the days then one day I thought no, I want some sunlight exposure today....I didn't really notice much temperature difference between whether they were open or closed. Room position seems to make more difference - the East-facing rooms seem to stay a good several degrees cooler than the West-facing ones, which get most of the sun during the day and it's far more intense then the sun exposure the East-facing rooms get with the sun rise/early morning.

EmeraldRoulette · 04/07/2026 13:06

Thanks everyone that makes lots of sense

I've done all the experiments in my old flat, but not in this one

This morning we had cloud cover which was hugely helpful. It's gone now though.

Whyohwhy321 · 04/07/2026 13:13

Hot hot weather back from Wednesday onwards 🥵

the80sweregreat · 04/07/2026 13:28

Oh for some rain and colder weather.

JenniferBooth · 04/07/2026 19:28

And now i have an ear infection . Like i did last September Did all the right things Called NHS 111 yesterday at 4pm and this morning at 7am Still waiting for my clinician callback. Friend drove me to a walk in centre yesterday only to find it had closed and wasnt operating anymore. The pain is really something else. I did everything right and am no further forward And then they moan when we go to A&E Better shut up now before The Other Site takes my posts out of context again.

KilkennyCats · 04/07/2026 20:44

Pharmacists can prescribe antibiotics now, @JenniferBooth

JenniferBooth · 04/07/2026 20:47

Rituelec · 05/07/2026 00:25

When I was on holiday once the onsite doctor gave be antibiotic eye drops to put in my ear which worked effectively for my ear infection from swimming in the pool because I’d foolishly cleaned my ears before going in so no wax to protect it

Jennifer , hope you’re feeling better now.
Anything ear related is always horrible.
It’s so hot here again too , not really had a lot of let up from it the last few days. Doesn’t help if your feeling ill too.

Thanks its bloody awful. its stayed quite hot here. There has been no let up.

the80sweregreat · 06/07/2026 17:18

No, it feels like it’s been hot forever , but it only started mid June or something. Feels like years. It’s been relentless;(

Lottapianos · 06/07/2026 17:59

Definitely too bloody hot in London, but doesn't feel anywhere near as humid as it did 2 weeks ago. One whole degree cooler tomorrow! 😁 Every little helps.....
