I am frantically ordering a big blackout sheet for my sky light. May look at getting another air con unit and more fans.

I’m so worried as my parents are coming to look after my dog in mid July when we go away abroad, they are in their 70s. I do have a dog walker coming every day but they won’t be able to do anything if it’s this hot again. And I would spend the whole holiday worrying- probably need to not go. I’ll be so upset - instead of being on holiday by a pool I’ll be in a dark room with my dog!

I have blackout curtains in my bedroom and dark curtains (including floral blackout) in the other bedrooms. I’m light sensitive anyway but I feel they’ve been a good investment with this heat. You can get blackout blinds too.

Exactly how I feel! I’ve spent the past two weeks in a state of tears, anxiety and frankly not wanting to carry on. People don’t realise the stress mentally and physically when you haven’t felt cool or comfortable for weeks on end. I also feel desperation and rage at what we have all done to the planet.

Ah, lovely. I know how you feel. And to look at the forecast is soul destroying. Try to relax just a little in these few days. We’re all here for you and in this together.

Trying to hold it together but honestly yesterday despite the air conditioning, I thought I was about to keel over in my spin class (I’m the instructor so have to be there). I think what also happens is “residual “ heat as in it takes days, sometimes a week or more to get it out of my system as it were.

the80sweregreat · 28/06/2026 11:41

Yes. We can all support each other here. Avoid the ‘ it’s only summer , 1976 .. not climate change , blah blah people online and come here instead. We can’t do anything much about it, but those who love it hot can start their own thread !
I don’t mind the odd warm day , if it’s nice with a breeze and bearable , but last week was an endurance test and it affects your life so much.
Some people can’t appreciate how unhappy it can make you feel.

It's fresher here today thank goodness. But I'm worried about the next heatwave; upstairs becomes uninhabitable. Our coolest room is a small east- facing room off the kitchen, which has a table & chairs in it. I want to move those, get a sofa to go in there so we can use it as a sitting room. And I've just ordered a blow up mattress to use in there. So i feel a bit more in control of the situation.

Been using a cheap blow up bed in my garage conversion with its more modern insulation that seems to keep it cooler in summer. It’s the only way I’ll be able to get some sleep right now.

I’ve ordered blackout blinds now for the kitchen glass doors. Also thinking about another air con unit for the kitchen. The dog loves to hang out in there and it’s like in oven with the sun on it.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 28/06/2026 11:44

I do agree. I’m also at home a lot and it’s so stifling. But then I wouldn’t want to leave my little cat to suffer unless I could be on hand to offer wet food and water- the foood goes off so fast - and wet treats throughout the day. So I can’t go out for air con (the new going out for pizza?!) throughout the day.

I looked at the forecast yesterday and almost threw myself out the window in despair.

the80sweregreat · 28/06/2026 11:50

I think this coming week where i am looks manageable so far. I know it changes. I just hope it burns itself out and July may be alright. You have to hope for the best , but it’s not easy.

Delatron · 28/06/2026 11:57

I may have to come off social media - my feed on facebook is constantly about how the next heatwave is coming mid July and it’s gonna be worse. It’s causing me huge anxiety and I’m worried about my holiday and my dog!

BurntBroccoli · 28/06/2026 12:07

Such a lovely breeze today - I’ve opened every window in the house to try and get all the horrible humid stale air out.

Think I might even do the hoovering today as feeling more energetic! Already washed the bedding and cushion covers.

That's good what has affected me most is not being able to sleep.

You need blinds on the outside really as blackout curtains trap the very hot air between the glass and the material. The heat rises and escapes into the room.

Me too ! We go away later in July but I'm worried about being left vulnerable in places I can't control like planes and airports / hotels where you don't know how good the air con will be and leaving my cat.i normally don't go away in July /August usually may and Oct to avoid any heat aboard but we have been dancing around 18 year old end of exams etc.

Agree stop the sun hitting the glass on the outside.

Same and plan to do as much as possible before the next one

SqueakyFromme · 28/06/2026 12:17

@ConstantlyFuriosa I keep the licky lix in the fridge I’m hoping it cools my kitty down a little bit

Argh!! Can I stick the blackout blinds on the outside? We are moving house soon so just need a temporary method for the next heatwave- especially if my parents are here with my dog.

Same. Several summers I have logged out, usually following a mental breakdown over the heat and the inevitable tranquilisers prescribed for one week just to get me some sleep and back on as even a keel as possible after weeks and weeks of discomfort and lack of sleep. The facebook hype and indeed vitriol to anyone who dares express dislike of summer and heat gets too much. And as a sufferer of reverse sad, July is effectively my January- endless and with terrible weather!

Delatron · 28/06/2026 12:41

I’m guessing my algorithm is now feeding me every weather horror prediction.

the80sweregreat · 28/06/2026 12:42

To add insult to injury, July and august have 31 days as well. The full maximum of days to taut us with !

Delatron · 28/06/2026 12:56

I’m reporting ‘not interested’ to every weather post that keeps coming up on my facebook feed. And the reason I’ve given is ‘disturbing!’

If they do have some mistaken belief that drip feeding us will stop or lessen the cries for air con then they are being very naive

PinkHollyhocks · 28/06/2026 13:43

My AC died yesterday after barely a week's use😫😭😭😭😭😭 Luckily Amazon have been great concerning a refund. However, there are no portable AC units to be found anywhere. So now I'm in a state of panic wrt the next looming heatwave.

JenniferBooth · 28/06/2026 13:49

And now we have the stench of weed if we have the windows open Fucking shithole

ScaredButUnavoidable · 28/06/2026 13:58

I’m near the midlands and we had about 30 seconds earlier of light rain earlier - it was heaven! I was in a nearby park when it happened and I was so happy! I just closed my eyes, lay on the grass and enjoyed it.

I’m now back home in front of all my fans again feeling miserable.
