Starmer hasn’t achieved anything in his own right. He’s always been a terrible speaker, he’s never even coined a memorable phrase (apart from ones that are memorable because they’re used in ridicule like ‘smash the gangs’), he’s brought no memorable shift in Labour (unlike Blair’s totemic ditching of Clause IV, for example) or stamped his personality on it, and most of all he’s never actually done anything of policy substance.
A strong sign of his policy uselessness and his lawerly caution was in his speech the other day “I can announce that, subject to a public interest test, we will renationalise British Steel” 🙄. He was reading out a memo, not inspiring anyone or setting a clear political direction.
Labour’s win was given to them by the Tories. Neither Starmer nor anyone else in Labour earned it.
And Rayner won’t win any leadership contest. Labour MPs have admitted to themselves that she’s too dim and a liability. ‘Characters’ in parties are much loved until their job matters, then they get dumped.
