A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

@Nuthatch26,”The Labour coalition of WC people, and champagne socialists all voting for the same party has never made sense to me though.”

This for me also. “Never the Twain shall meet”.
It has done more harm than good.

I have listened to Kemi Badenoch's speech

I thought it was excellent

Being honest, I would've left out the comment about haircuts and I would've liked some kind of reply to the gentleman's comment about the war.

The haircut comment may have been to guarantee headlines - if she didn't think she was doing well enough without it, then she would've thought "okay, I'll put that in."

I thought it was brilliant. Generally, I think she has made too much comment on Robert Jenrick but the photocopy of remark here is the sort of thing that works.

not that she cares what I think LOL!

Unrivalled · 13/05/2026 21:49

agreed, also think that London labourites have no understanding that people that used to be solid labour voters don't all work in the public sector anymore and none of their policies have helped them in any tangible ways. Isn't that the thing about good policies, that they help most people and not one or two small groups?

Agree. I see Labour’s failure as embodied in Starmer. It’s not only that he’s a terrible, uninspiring communicator - and an unpleasant man in his blame-throwing sneery way - but what he’s an expression of.

Labour is, and everyone can see it, a middle class project of patronising, sloganeering finger waggers. Very few people feel any affinity with these Islington technocrats.

Labour is obsessed with wonk-driven legislation and fashionable causes. Their attempts at the common touch - remember Reeves’s penny off a pint? - are so obviously contrived that people ignore them. They’re rightly seen as phoney.

Starmer thinks it’s great that we go net-zero, look up to international courts and have digital id. Nobody gives a fuck about those unless they live in Labour north London or on a houseboat.

The most successful governments like Thatcher’s and Blair’s made people feel they were on the voters’ side. They had values and visions (especially Thatcher) that were obvious and down to earth. You can’t make everyone happy but you can carry most with you if they believe you’re sincere, consistent and have goals that all can understand.

Yes exactly this.
Blair was exceptionally talented in this regard, but I don't see anyone of that calibre in the current bunch.
Takes me back to that Times piece I posted yesterday about the Labour factions.

I'm struggling to care who they replace Starmer with. It will be downhill from here.

Agree with you, including your points of criticism.
I like how she kept addressing the Labour MPs, as though she was stepping up to lead them too in Bollard's absence. Very clever.

Is it a good book? Sounds like something I would like.
Kemi seems to attract more hate from women than men. Bizarre.

Particularly on here as more left skewed. I think there’s some bitterness about her success. It makes some feel bad.

Re book, yes I really liked it. Insightful and easy to get through

SapphireCasino · 13/05/2026 22:05

Also the current lot don't seem to have any basic PR skills

Streeting today - he should've smiled and waved and joked with journalists outside number 10. Even just said hello if he couldn't manage a joke.

Polanski - this might seem an odd take but if you look at his statement about not paying council tax, it is very clear

He states the situation, takes responsibility and says that he will rectify it. Short and clear.

Look at what we got when Angela Rayner was found not paying the correct tax

Honestly, at this point, I wonder if I ought to offer PR services to Labour! Do they not have anyone on their team who does even the most basic stuff? I'm not an "expert", but these things are screamingly obvious.

Yes for sure. It’s the sneery hypocrisy that Starmer does, and lack of insight into everyday things.

SapphireCasino · 13/05/2026 22:06

And on another thread, they've provided some figures to show that the immigration figures really have come down and explained why they have come down

I suspect Starmer is keeping that one quiet though -because he's actually not happy about it. He doesn't want to announce it as a positive.

True, hypocrisy is the other big thing. Voters hate, hate, hate hypocrites. And hypocrisy is exactly what the middle class left excels at - it’s practically an entry qualification.

My favourite for now isn’t even a Labour hypocrite though. It’s the Green councillor who’s into flash cars and has recently hired a Lamborghini.

The Mail’s saying Afzal Khan has refused to step down.

SapphireCasino · 13/05/2026 22:40

@DenizenOfAisleOfShame oh I didn't know who the so-called safe seat was

Seems mad to give up a job for that because what can be offered?

Still on the Streeting PR - he also needed a folder or something when he was walking into Downing Street. Would have been a helpful barrier to the cameras.

Yeah, seems incredibly arrogant to suppose you’re so important and so likely to be a winner that you think you can get someone to throw away their career and purpose to let you compete.

SionnachRuadh · 13/05/2026 22:56

I feel we're approaching the point that comes up in every Labour crisis, when Barry Gardiner offers himself as a candidate.

You know the leader is a goner when he's lost Badass Baz.

I must be honest - I didn't know who Barry Gardiner was until I saw him on GB News.

so he's a regular at this is he? Another example of the sort of person Sir Charles Walker was talking about?

Anyone read the Conservatives' Alternative King's Speech?

I got into it after watching Kemi Badenoch's speech twice because it was so good. She rose to the occasion once more, she's a brilliant speaker and she went at them from top to bottom, no stone left unturned, all egos bruised. And it was deserved.

As for her counter-program, it's concrete, not a word salad of values, principles, milestones etc., but a detailed list of the legal changes and reforms she wants to bring.

You can't blame her for lack of vision or ideas.

Alternative King's Speech

Under Labour people in Britain are struggling, we need a new approach.

@inkognitha that's another thing I meant to do, but I don't know where I'm going to get the time (yes I could get off here and read it now)

So, I wonder what Kemi will see on her social media now that she's been retweeted by Nicki Minaj... of all the things she was expecting to happen after that speech, I bet that wasn't one of them.

CandidLurker · Yesterday 06:40

I like to see that Kemi now seems to have lost any fear. Her delivery is brilliant. I liked the bit when she looked at Wes Streeting and said something like “you can stop giving me dirty looks”.

Rusholme has a large Asian population. It’s not a given AB would get in there. In my opinion he definitely would have got in in Denton. must be very frustrating for him!

Kemi’s a natural, isn’t she?

Yes, it looks like another decision that will come back to bite Starmer on the derrière.

What a plank.
