Connor Naismith, the Labour MP for Crewe Nantwich, said Sir Keir Starmer should not use the threat of market uncertainty to maintain the status quo.
The backbencher, who has called on the prime minister to go, told Times Radio: “Any prospective new leader would have to set out how the choices they would make could reassure the markets, etc. But the point that I would just very quickly make is that I think if that is your central argument for remaining in post, then you’ve lost the argument.
"We can’t just rely on, ‘we can’t change because the markets will go into turmoil’. That is not good enough, I’m afraid, for my constituents.”
