A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Beth Rigby saying that Burnham allies are threatening to bring Streeting down if he becomes PM.
Also saying that a cohort of ministers are prepared to act if cabinet will not.

Yeh I bet, they want Burnham. It’s going to be drawn out now bollard is bollarding.

Nuthatch26 · 12/05/2026 11:02

Drawn out will only expose infighting and factions. That would be far more damaging for them.
The minister who resigned this morning is a protege of Ed Miliband according to James Lyons. Perhaps he's limbering up.

The fracture in the party will hopefully give them pause for thought in trying to shoehorn through contentious legislation. Another run at Assisted suicide, I'm looking at you.

Hallowedturf · 12/05/2026 11:15

A summer of discontent beckons.

Miliband may be Labour’s only immediate solution if enough of them want Starmer out at all costs. The centre/right of Labour would be less frenzied about Miliband (though they’ll hate him and regard him as a loser) than the left would be about Streeting.

Starmer’s hope that by clinging on he’s seen by the public as a resolute, strong figure will disappear the moment he next opens his mouth. He’s just so pathetic and uninspiring.

Upstartled · 12/05/2026 11:28

I think the electorate will see him as squatting in No.10. I don't think he's going to see a bounce for clinging on in there, either.

Milliband has broader appeal to the Labour Party but I don't think that's what voters are after. He may well become symbolic of the further and faster that they never wanted - and I've yet to see anyone in my day to day life say anything complementary about his net zero project.

FatEndoftheWedge · 12/05/2026 12:18

No not millband !!

FatEndoftheWedge · 12/05/2026 12:19

He's chucking money away on concepts that are not proven like carbon capture !

Unrivalled · 12/05/2026 12:35

surely it's obvious that if they do change, it has to stick...I can't understand the resurrection of Ed Milliband's career either, to lurch from one failed leader to another doesn't seem a winner

Unrivalled · 12/05/2026 12:38

interesting on the TRIP live, AC thinks that Yvette C is seriously after the job...

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 12/05/2026 12:41

Labour is absolutely brilliant to watch.

They can’t agree on anything. They hate each other with a passion not found in any other party. Ministers can’t say anything without spewing slogans and soundbites. All of them - loyal or disloyal - are showing that they’re completely useless. Starmer is clearly having some sort of asylum episode in which he thinks he’s Napoleon.

It’s fucking great theatre.

She’d be my pick. I don’t know whether she could keep the party from completely fracturing though. I don’t know how she’s regarded by the left.

This is what I thought happened and then someone posted this.

"Starmer refused to let Cabinet raise leadership challenge, says official

Keir Starmer shut down any talk of the leadership race in Cabinet, refusing to allow ministers to raise the issue — and then declined to hold one‑to‑one follow‑ups afterwards, according to a government official.

While Pat McFadden insisted no one challenged the PM in the room, a government official, sceptical of Starmer, told POLITICO: “Keir said in Cabinet that he won’t discuss the elections or his leadership, and that he will only speak to cabinet ministers about that individually. Then after the meeting he declined to see cabinet ministers individually.”"

Apparently he just read out a pre-prepared spiel about closer ties with Europe and the leadership questions weren't mentioned at all.

So they could truthfully say he wasn't challenged, when technically there was no space to achieve that.

Unrivalled · 12/05/2026 12:48

yes it's a put up or shut up moment isn't it, he's calling their bluff. Seeing who wants to play Brutus.

I keep entertaining a lovely daydream where Yvette gets in and they unpick school VAT, amongst other things, two more children leaving from younger DC class primarily due to VAT pushing the costs beyond affordability...one more DC with SEN will be trying to access additional support in the state sector.

Yep it’s not surprising. But doesn’t make those 6 cabinet members any happier.

BBC saying that the Cabinet meeting was essentially a “come and have a go if you think you’re hard enough” aimed at Wes Streeting. If Downing Street are still gunning for WS doesn’t this disprove the theory that the previous briefing against him was nothing to do with KS and all the brainchild of Morgan McSweeny?

Nuthatch26 · 12/05/2026 13:05

Burnham was due to speak at an event in London this afternoon.
His name has now been dropped from the speakers list.

Sarahconnor1 · 12/05/2026 13:07

Someone made the point on the news earlier that Labour has become so factionalised if there is a new leader they will probably be toppled before the next GE. The left of the party don't want streeting and I suspect much of the red wall don't want the party to veer too left.

No more pyschodrama.

justasking111 · 12/05/2026 13:07

It's insane who's he going to put into the cabinet, his cleaner, the cat 🙄
