A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour* *government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

1700 Seats overall the the UK...

Oooh

I know.
I had a chat with the man there and he said it was around 40% busier than normal. He said he had to keep pushing the boxes of votes down to compact them, which he's never had to do before at a local election.
No idea if this is a good or bad sign for Labour here, but my gut says bad.

https://www.pollcheck.co.uk/locals-2026

Has a council by council projection, very much errs of the lighter side in terms of Labour losses - around 1200 - but is an interesting starting point nonetheless.

For those areas counting overnight it suggests Labour will lose around 220 councillors, Conservatives around 160, and “others” around 50. On the gain side Reform gain around 380, Greens 40 and LDs 20.

Within those numbers just for the London borough overnight counts. Losers Labour just under 50 councillors, conservative just under 40, others down near 25. Reform gain just over 50, LDs and Greens around 30 gains each.

so a useful yardstick to measure against what actually happens at those overnight counts.

This is great, thank you @boys3. I'll keep that tab open for the results.

@redange The poll posted above shows huge gains for Reform. I think they'll do well here too.

Oh, that's interesting

Apropos nothing, I remember when councils used to do important stuff like clear drains.

Never thought I'd end up being nostalgic for those days.... such basic things....

DancingFerret · 07/05/2026 19:57

Well, they were queuing out of the door; apparently it’s been busy all day, which is unusual for this area. Judging by the conversations going on in the queue, we should remain a Conservative stronghold.

Unbelievably, the one thing which Lancs still seems to do outside our front door (I have a weird situation where my house is Sefton, but the road in front of the house is Lancs) is clear drains. Potholes, they're shite at though! (Reform council in Lancs.)

Interesting. Thanks for sharing, I was curious if it was just my ward looking at a higher turnout. It was 34% here last time, will be interesting to see the figures tomorrow.
If turnout is up significantly, the polling will be off.

NoWordForFluffy · 07/05/2026 20:32

Our polling station wasn't busy. There were a few people, but not enough to suggest a bumper turn out.

WaffleBomb · 07/05/2026 20:37

How was your dinner out @NoWordForFluffy? Hope you enjoyed it :-)

It was lovely, thank you! We do love Hickory's, though it's not bloody cheap. 😩 Always busy though. 🤷‍♀️

Glad it was nice. I don't mind paying more if the food is really good. I get annoyed when I pay a lot for something that I could have made better myself.
I don't know Hickory's but will store it in my memory bank for the next time I'm in your neck of the woods.

@NoWordForFluffy oh well maybe if we go that way, they'll start cleaning the drains again!

Glad you enjoyed your meal

I had American style waffles at a brunch yesterday. Gorgeous. Flipping huge though - is that what you were eating when you chose your username @WaffleBomb

I had those waffles last time we went to Hickory's. They're amazing!

@WaffleBomb, there's quite a few in the NW, potentially relatively near to you as well.

SapphireCasino · 07/05/2026 21:10

@NoWordForFluffy oh I wasn't at the same restaurant as you

I've actually never been to your part of the world

This was just a place in Essex and it was a work brunch and somebody, with very good taste, chose waffles from the menu to give to the private function people. I think some others would've preferred pancakes.

Now I'm waffling on about how great it was to have waffles... but I don't usually see them on menus here - I don't eat out much - I used to make a point of having them when I visited the US regularly. So they made me feel nostalgic 🥰

Just googled, yes there are quite a few around NW. Will keep it in mind.

I bloody lurve waffles, but thats not how I chose this name Sapphire. Kemi likes to us the term waffle-bomb to describe Labour drivel. 😁
I'm not keen on this name though, so might change again soon. I'm so used to my old name!

@NoWordForFluffy sorry I'm tired!

maybe American waffles are making a comeback here... posters with TDS will probably boycott them.

@WaffleBomb I didn't know Kemi had said that

Interrupting our morning Cheerios with a waffle bomb....

Well, Hickory's is an American-style restaurant, so probably more likely than some to have American waffles on the menu!

I just remembered that I took a photo of my food last time (inc waffles!).

Let’s hope some common sense prevails. Quite like NHS, and do need state pension to survive retirement if I ever get there.

Labour are scoring lots of own goals, Reform leader dodged questioning on current local government record.

For me in locals, I tend to go for effective councillors rather than by party.

We didn't have a choice to vote for any existing councillors, as they all fucked off, so it was a punt into the unknown. So, fingers crossed, eh?! 😬
