A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour* *government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Not soppy, its nice and should be celebrated. 😊

Labour trying to cancel these election was a sharp reminder not to take democracy for granted.

I’m no conspiracy theorist, but I still think they had something to do with the southern rail network issues today….

😁

It was SWR, GWR - the lot.

And yes, SWR are utter wank.

Labour might not, but the unions….

Apropos nothing.

A Ukrainian man who is accused of setting fire to the prime minister's house told police he had never heard of Sir Keir Starmer, the Old Bailey has heard.

Ukrainian nationals Roman Lavrynovych, 22, and Petro Pochynok, 35, and Ukrainian-born Romanian national Stanislav Carpiuc, 27, are accused of targeting two properties and a car linked to Sir Keir. They deny the charges.

Lavrynovych allegedly carried out the arson attacks after being recruited online by Russian-speaking Telegram user "El Money" who promised him payment.

Is that still going on? It's been very quiet on the reporting front.

I hadn't considered the unions. Hmmmm!

I've just been to vote. There were school kids, working age and retired. A continuous stream of voters. Now in all my years I've never seen a stream like this of all ages.

I used to work these days for the council was a weeks wages for a days work. Now it's £200 for a days work my council friend told me. I recall how cold it was at 6am setting up and how tired I was by 6pm. Only the money kept me going.

Then we had busy and dead periods. Today it was bouncing along. DH went this morning he said was retirees at 9am.

That sounds positive.

A motivated electorate - motivated to send this lousy government a clear message.

SapphireCasino · 07/05/2026 16:46

@justasking111 a week's wages? Interesting.

About the email to the civil service, I bet everyone sends that before elections.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the turnout figures. That in itself is a good barometer.

The immigration thread elsewhere is going as you might expect; name calling a gogo.

We should just have open borders and all sing kumbaya apparently (although there are also some sane posts so not a total lefty fest)!

WaffleBomb · 07/05/2026 18:01

Just voted. 😁 Feel better for it.

There was a queue outside our polling station! Never seen that before for a local election. Its only a small portakabin on a side road, so usually really quiet.

We’ll be voting later. In the meantime, I’ve just seen an AIBU from someone who hopes the Greens do really well.🤨

The mind boggles. I looked up our green candidate as we haven't had any leaflets etc. She looks like she had her photo taken en route to a cosplay event.
Funny, I haven't heard any Labour supporters banging on about votes for 16 and 17 yo for a while. I wonder why 🤭

I’m not convinced that high turnouts would be bad for Labour. The hysteria that Labour tries always to whip up about ‘fascists’, ‘the neoliberals’, ‘Armageddon for the vulnerable’ and so on might have got some retired council workers, teachers, social science academics and the long-term unemployed up to the polling station from sitting in front of BBC Breakfast and Countdown.

I wonder if the Reform fear will send more people out to vote? Given their predicted % in a GE isn't that high, and I've seen lots of people post on FB against them, I wonder if there's a concerted effort to prevent them winning in some places?

SapphireCasino · 07/05/2026 18:36

I'm just back

I would say it looks like a normal number of people for the time of day

Possibly a bit more faffing because of ID

Not impressed with the staff member looking at videos of her dog and trying to show the other staff members, who were not thrilled.

I think that’s likely. When Labour’s a bust, like now, the Labour faithful demonise everyone else. I suspect there’ll be a lot of tactical voting. It won’t help Labour against the Greens though.

As an aside, I checked a Green leaflet that said they were the only likely contenders in my ward, against Labour. I looked at the actual previous voting figures for my ward. The Greens’ claim was a gobsmacking lie. It doesn’t make any difference because I live in Labour central. But it’s amazing what lies the Greens (and the LibDems) tell in a search for votes.

Pacificsunshine · 07/05/2026 18:49

I voted at 7:20am. I was the only one there. The bowling green which is my polling station looked lovely. My ward is safely Tory. Unusual for London.

All of our local parties have indulged in this kind of nonsense. It drives me mad.

Has a council by council projection, very much errs of the lighter side in terms of Labour losses - around 1200 - but is an interesting starting point nonetheless.

For those areas counting overnight it suggests Labour will lose around 220 councillors, Conservatives around 160, and “others” around 50. On the gain side Reform gain around 380, Greens 40 and LDs 20.

Within those numbers just for the London borough overnight counts. Losers Labour just under 50 councillors, conservative just under 40, others down near 25. Reform gain just over 50, LDs and Greens around 30 gains each.

so a useful yardstick to measure against what actually happens at those overnight counts.

redange · 07/05/2026 19:33

I am guessing Reform will poll '31.1%' Conservative 18% Greens 18% Labour 14% Lib Dems 14% in England..

Positive thinking says Reform to gain 1700 council seats. I voted this morning for my Reform Candidate.

However, looking forward to when the General Election takes place whether in '2027' or 28/29 . We on the right have got to get a grip of the issues surrounding splitting the vote and being counter productive in how we vote. For instance it is nobody on the 'right's' interest for Jacob Rees Mogg, Kemi ,Katy Lam etc to be fighting a Reform Candidate full on. Alternatively in places like Macclesfield according to 'Now-Cast' Labour would hold on with 29% while Reform and the Conservatives would jointly poll 55% Lunacy. In the next few months the right is going to have to assess the situation the country and politics is in and 'grow up' . This, means frank discussions about who stands where and likelihood of wining the seat.
