An authoritarian state such as Iran does not function by there being a handful of people suppressing and oppressing the vast majority of the populace. The masses huddling in the corner whispering "freedom" to each other.

Nope, as we know, an authoritarian state can function because in those masses, there is an awful lot of people only too willing to pick up the phone and tell the cops they heard their neighbour whisper a banned word.
