Fuel stations empty and car queues

I live in a town about 10 miles outside of Edinburgh - population about 70,000.

We have several garages and I just usually go to the local Tesco as it's cheap and convenient. It seems we have no fuel at all now. The asda fuel station had a delivery this afternoon and there was a queue of cars waiting to fill up so I am guessing that will run dry again soon.

I did notice the roads seemed quieter when I was out and about and so i did wonder if people were staying home to save their fuel.

Hard to know if there are actually shortages or if everyone is just panicking.

I have to admit I usually just fill mine when it gets empty but I have been going once a week to top it back up to full at the moment.

What's happening in your local area. I've been checking FifeJammers Facebook and it seems other areas are running out too ie Cupar.

Well I’m in the midlands, I’ve been out several times this week, roads are just as busy as ever and no queues at any petrol station I passed

Toilet rolls didn't run out everywhere straight away. Little snowballs turn into big ones if you roll them long enough.

It is because big suppliers bulk buy, so Tesco for example will change prices maybe once a week.
Jet/Esso/Shell are often franchisees that will buy daily or every couple of days so much more exposed to changes in the wholesale price.

I work at a supermarket and we set our prices by checking what other garages are charging, that’s why prices vary in different areas. One store might be a few pence cheaper than another one a few miles away depending on the competition in the area.

Completely normal in the Midlands today - expensive but no queues and no shortages

There are no shortages. People can’t stock fuel like toilet paper so I’ll give it about 10 days and it will calm down.

People are causing this! It’s really short sighted doing this.

Yes if the average driver keeps the car half full and is now filling up its creating the shortage.

There is no shortage in my area nor the two others I’ve been in over the past week. Prices are high but vary quite a lot (enough to go a mile or two out of the way in some cases). I’ve not seen queues either.

I agree - give it a week and the queues will die down where they exist as all those tanks will still be mostly full and it will be back to people refuelling on normal schedules. It was the same in previous crises.

No issues here, Greater London

i think it’s a rural thing. My mum is in the countryside and is having issues

HappyTalkingAndLaughing · 01/04/2026 21:09

East Midlands. Filled up today as l'm away for Easter. Queues no worse than any other Bank Holidays weekend preparations. No diesel... but my Tesco often hasn't any anyway

Thanks for posting everyone. Seems to be affecting central Scotland then more than other areas. Perhaps because we can still remember the Grangemouth blockades 20 years ago.

A few people scattered elsewhere have reported problems but most of you are saying it is all fine. Hopefully it stays that way.

Anyone heading to central Scotland this weekend keep your tank filled up as you approach.

I'm over in Glasgow and just felt like I was taken, lifted upside down and robbed blind - quarter tank of petrol - £28! It is ridiculous! £2.099 per litre! Mental times ahead I think!

We live in East lothian and the local Tesco has no unleaded at all.
DH had to use the very expensive shell garage nearby. Its prices are always much higher than tesco even before this.
All they had was the premium unleaded left. DH was shocked at the price !

North Yorkshire - no queues, no shortages. Everyone carrying on as normal.

Buggabootwo · 01/04/2026 21:15

South Oxfordshire here. Tesco was out but the garage about 500 yards away was full, had very short queues and was 6p per litre more. I passed another about 4 miles away that had all pumps working and no queues and 7p higher than Tesco. it looks like people are more price sensitive than usual rather than shortages.

Bluesecretarybird · 01/04/2026 21:21

I’m in Edinburgh, it’s been fine so far. Prices are going up as expected but I’ve not noticed any queues or shortages.

WomanintheAttic · 01/04/2026 21:21

Costco petrol station as usual was rammed. Did notice price at 191 per litre on a busy dual carriageway but historically that garage has always had the highest prices around.

Meteorite87 · 01/04/2026 21:22

I'm in the north of Kent and the only change is fuel prices going up.

Moonlightfrog · 01/04/2026 21:24

I keep seeing reports of local garages being out of fuel but I haven’t had any issues. I have been driving less due to fuel prices, filled up last week and probably won’t need to fill up again for another week. The prices here are crazy and I just can’t afford to go out unless I really need too.

You're really not living up to your username here.

In my area, there are a couple of stations closed completely as they have no fuel. There are others with queues but I think they still have some.

Ironically we're switching to an electric car tomorrow, and there couldn't be a better time!

Imagine if govts had really embraced EVs, which they could’ve easily done. Even decades ago. Wouldn’t be held as geopolitical hostages impacting our economy now.

Rainbow1901 · 01/04/2026 21:25

I refilled yesterday and usually do so every 4-6 weeks depending on how many school runs/GCs activities I'm needed for. No queues but ouch at prices!!

LarsenBiceshelf · 01/04/2026 21:26

The local supermarket constantly has a bit of a queue (more than normal) but the expensive Shell station down the road has barely anyone in it. If people are panic buying, they're not desperate enough to pay through the nose yet!

LancashireButterPie · 01/04/2026 21:28

There's been a few issues in North Wales. I guess if you live rurally you might need to ensure your car has adequate fuel in the tank.
Also the kids are off school, people on holiday in Snowdonia might be topping up before a long drive home.

Heyitsmeeee · 01/04/2026 21:29

I'm Birmingham and our local morrisons and Sainsbury's have been closed the last 2 days as out of both diesel and petrol. Managed to fill up elsewhere paying 1.79 for diesel 😩

😁

Smug EV owner.

Smug small petrol owner with full tank to last a week. Not going to tell where I am. All fine here

Londonrach1 · 01/04/2026 21:36

Midlands here...lots of fuel, no queues but the price is getting silly.

aWeeCornishPastie · 01/04/2026 21:38

@roseymoiraand you are rude.

TheNameWasOnceChosen · 01/04/2026 21:38

I popped past Tescos today to get some fuel. A couple of the pumps were out of order but plenty weren't. Cost me 65£ to fill up (I was on 30 miles left). I think that's 10£ more than normal.

I'm in North London.

LVhandbagsatdawn · 01/04/2026 21:39

I was in Exeter this morning, big Tesco's had no diesel according to the sign out the front (I wasn't going for fuel so didn't investigate) but the local more expensive petrol stations seemed to have stock.

arguable the technology was there and its still not solved. range, charging issues, cost all blight the market
