Fuel stations empty and car queues

I live in a town about 10 miles outside of Edinburgh - population about 70,000.

We have several garages and I just usually go to the local Tesco as it's cheap and convenient. It seems we have no fuel at all now. The asda fuel station had a delivery this afternoon and there was a queue of cars waiting to fill up so I am guessing that will run dry again soon.

I did notice the roads seemed quieter when I was out and about and so i did wonder if people were staying home to save their fuel.

Hard to know if there are actually shortages or if everyone is just panicking.

I have to admit I usually just fill mine when it gets empty but I have been going once a week to top it back up to full at the moment.

What's happening in your local area. I've been checking FifeJammers Facebook and it seems other areas are running out too ie Cupar.

All ok north Kent today, no queues, diesel £181.9, I did notice Sainsbury’s car park was very quiet in my opinion for 4pm, roads not noticeably quiet.

isspringaspringing · 01/04/2026 20:06

No issues in my area of London- roads a bit quieter because everyone has seemingly gone on exotic holidays if instagram is to be believed. Filled up the car today- petrol station was quieter than normal. All pumps working.

I cant stop.driving I don't get a choice.

If I want to get my kids to school or get to work.

I cant work from home.
And unless after the holidays they decide to shut the school I will need car to get kids to school.

Of course some people are dependent on driving, but we’ve seen in covid how many could wfh when it came to it. Really irresponsible of businesses not to start allowing this IMO.

Noseyoldcow · 01/04/2026 20:09

I usually buy petrol when my tank is nearly empty, so this thread had me feeling bad for topping up from half a tank. But now I’ve checked the prices, and I’m feeling smug instead. I paid £1.80 a litre for V power petrol yesterday, which was bad enough. But today at the same station the price is £1.85 a litre.

Bookloverforever · 01/04/2026 20:10

No problems for us in Yorkshire… husband filled up about 2am this morning on his way to work and unsurprisingly no queue 🤣

we would normally fill up about now in the month - as along with lots of others it was payday.

I have a free bus pass so have used that a lot over the last few days… I’m off work for the holidays so I have more time . We can normally day to day do without the car. A tank lasts the month , so if we are being more mindful it will last a while.

we could all do without being more mindful about where we drive I suppose

I am in East Anglia. Unfortunately needing diesel which seems a bit more scarce. Apart from Tesco, which often runs out, it’s normally possible to get fuel. It’s just very expensive. The price difference between petrol and diesel is now close to 30p per litre.

I’m also in East Anglia and had to go to three garages to find diesel yesterday. Tescos and Sainsbury’s had no diesel, I got some at a Shell garage but even there several of their diesel pumps were closed so I think I got there just in time.

8misskitty8 · 01/04/2026 20:16

We live in East lothian and the local Tesco has no unleaded at all.
DH had to use the very expensive shell garage nearby. Its prices are always much higher than tesco even before this.
All they had was the premium unleaded left. DH was shocked at the price !

Catcatcatcatcat · 01/04/2026 20:21

Absolutely no problem where I am, south coast.

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/04/2026 20:27

We haven’t changed our buying patterns here but dh said the local Sainsbury’s had issues the other day and he filled up at a more expensive garage. He fills up all the time due to his commute and hasn’t had issues since. He was driving past Morrisons last night so I asked him to take mine instead and fill up as I need fuel for tomorrow. No issues there either.

Dd’s friend’s dad got him filling up their 3 cars the other week all one after the other because the prices were going up. I just ignored it. Yes, fuel may be more expensive. But it just is what it is.

Dawnintheageofaquariams · 01/04/2026 20:28

Yorkshire.
Tesco out of diesel and regular unleaded.
Other supermarkets fine, people just shopping Tesco which was the cheapest.
No major traffic queuing anywhere.

SillyGoose33 · 01/04/2026 20:31

Im in Wales and yesterday Tesco had run out of petrol , Sainsbury's had run out of diesel . Queues were bad. There was also no large bags of pasta in Tesco just the small ones .

It is because big suppliers bulk buy, so Tesco for example will change prices maybe once a week.
Jet/Esso/Shell are often franchisees that will buy daily or every couple of days so much more exposed to changes in the wholesale price.

Octavia64 · 01/04/2026 20:38

Norfolk no issues here.

I changed to an ev a couple of months ago which I am very grateful for as I remember the Grangemouth situation. Quite a lot of electric cars around here aswell.

DeathMetalMum · 01/04/2026 20:39

We have petrol stations with queues here and some people on the local Facebook group asking where has petrol. I filled up fully at Costco yesterday as we are going away for the bank holiday weekend. I wouldn't normally have needed to fill up until the end of next week.

numbandexhausted · 01/04/2026 20:42

I filled up yesterday (cos I was nearly empty not cos I was panic buying) and no queues but I noted how ridiculously expensive it was. Sussex.

LlynTegid · 01/04/2026 20:42

Imagine what it would be like if the schools were not on holiday and those who make half mile journeys in their petrol SUVs were panic buying.

Parker231 · 01/04/2026 20:46

Petrol stations are reporting that their deliveries are exactly the same as normal. No shortages.

3luckystars · 01/04/2026 20:48

There are no shortages. People can’t stock fuel like toilet paper so I’ll give it about 10 days and it will calm down.

People are causing this! It’s really short sighted doing this.

LoyalMember · 01/04/2026 20:51

I'm about 15 miles from Glasgow and I haven't noticed a difference.

Sausagedognamedmash · 01/04/2026 20:52

Definitely shortages in my corner of Devon. The drivers at work are struggling to fill their work vehicles to get to jobs. Diesel specifically seems to be an issue.

carpool · 01/04/2026 20:52

Was on the M40 today - not super busy but not abnormally quiet either. Passed a few petrol stations and didn't see any queues anywhere. Hoping to fill up tomorrow for the weekend so fingers crossed!

Smartiepants79 · 01/04/2026 18:28

Why does topping up cause shortages? I don’t really understand. They’re not suddenly using a whole load more fuel than normal? They’re not stockpiling it. How does it work?

In my area, there are a couple of stations closed completely as they have no fuel. There are others with queues but I think they still have some.

Ironically we're switching to an electric car tomorrow, and there couldn't be a better time!

ifonly4 · 01/04/2026 20:56

I topped up on 6 March as I needed enough to get DH to a specialist hospital a few days later. Our local had a massive queue, so I bypassed and topped up elsewhere- it was 4p cheaper. Since then our local has massively increased its prices at 158.9p for petrol, highest in area, so no queue at all!

I did a slight detour on Sunday, a queue as you would expect at Sainsburys but no worse than normal - and it was 141.9p per litre (apparently now 147.9p)l. North Gloucesteshire.

Unpaidviewer · 01/04/2026 20:57

Getting diesel is very hit or miss here. Its half term and I'm try to find more activities and stuff to do within walking distance or at home. Normally I'd jump in the car and drive for up to 30 mins without giving it a second thought.

Is it necessary to be rude! We can’t all know and understand everything about everything. I’m 100% sure I know stuff about things you don’t. You didn’t even bother to explain the answer to my question. What is the answer clever clogs??
