Fuel stations empty and car queues

I live in a town about 10 miles outside of Edinburgh - population about 70,000.

We have several garages and I just usually go to the local Tesco as it's cheap and convenient. It seems we have no fuel at all now. The asda fuel station had a delivery this afternoon and there was a queue of cars waiting to fill up so I am guessing that will run dry again soon.

I did notice the roads seemed quieter when I was out and about and so i did wonder if people were staying home to save their fuel.

Hard to know if there are actually shortages or if everyone is just panicking.

I have to admit I usually just fill mine when it gets empty but I have been going once a week to top it back up to full at the moment.

What's happening in your local area. I've been checking FifeJammers Facebook and it seems other areas are running out too ie Cupar.

Haven't had an issue this week- and have been to the fuel station twice as have done 500miles.
Once in Hertfordshire and once in the Midlands... Also will need fuel as doing the same journeys next week as well....

Honestly, what is the point in topping up? If the supply gets really tight then what are you going to do after that tank runs out?

Edited

well if I keep seeing the garage where I normally fill up being empty then I will stop doing drives that are not necessary ie taking the dog to the beach/park in another town for variety. I'll just keep it for essentials like getting him to the groomers or vets or for myself going to dentist or doctors.

Hopefully it is just a blip but I'm keeping an eye on it.

Well I’m in the midlands, I’ve been out several times this week, roads are just as busy as ever and no queues at any petrol station I passed

I am in the West Midlands and it was horrendous here yesterday. I work in a community team of Nurses and fuel was all sold out locally.

It’s people like you changing your behaviour who are causing localised shortages.

If you usually have half a tank in your car and you are now keeping it topped up that creates excess demand. If enough people do it all the local petrol is sitting in people’s tanks not being used instead of being at the petrol station available to buy.

yes I understand but if I hadn't then I'd be needing to fill up soon and all the garages in my town seem to be empty/closed so.....

Not panicking/topping up only works if everybody else does the same and clearly they are not.

That’s cos the Scots have been panic buying. No petrol shortages in Greater London.

Cheersmedears123 · 01/04/2026 18:45

Roads are busy here and petrol stations seem to be business as usual. Although I paid nearly £2 per litre yesterday which wasn’t enjoyable.

Just me, nobody else in Scotland. Okay then. I doubt my extra £10 per week has caused it. If everybody is doing it (which it appears they are) then yes it could well be causing it.

That's why I was trying to work out if there are real shortages or it is just because people have changed buying patterns.

No issues here at all - Ribble Valley/East Lancs and I have passed 3 petrol stations on the way to drop my child off at school every day this week. Husband has just filled up somewhere different, apart from saying don't panic when you look at the bank account he didn't remark on any queues.

However, having lived through the refinery blockades at the turn of the century then that was busy, you could waste a big chunk of your evening queueing! That was exacerbated by panic buying so clearly some of us haven't learned from that.

but they have 'the precious' and we don't.

Arcadia · 01/04/2026 18:48

Starting a thread with this name is irresponsible as will cause more panic buying 🤦‍♀️

Thanks for posting - so other areas are being affected too.

Not very good if you need your car for work which you obviously do.

I hope you manage to get some soon.

Chorley, Lancashire ASDA run out of diesel last week and today, roads as busy as usual.

Twiglets1 · 01/04/2026 18:49

No problems where I am (Berkshire in the South East of England).

swingingbytheseat · 01/04/2026 18:51

No problems here - Wales

Sassylovesbooks · 01/04/2026 18:52

I live on the South Coast, we haven't seen any fuel shortages or queuing.

ShakyBake · 01/04/2026 18:52

As a result of this post I thought I'd pop out and fill up and something extraordinary happened. The nozzle locked and the trigger would not release, I ran into the shop screaming as I had visions of an explosion. The forecourt manager rushed out and turned the emergency stop lever and said 'sorry about that' and I was in tears. The meter was showing £87 and I said I only wanted £15. To cut a long story short I didn't have to pay anything but all the people in the queue had to leave and drove right pass me as if to blame me

Do you mind sharing where you are in the country?

Near Cambridge

that was blocking the supplies tho. No one is blocking them but the refineries will have to turn up the taps. Diesel comes from abroad I think eg Netherlands. The media love it. DM will be gloating in creating issues where there are none. People will be posting stuff on tiktok how their children will go hungry or will be late for judo as daddy/mummy had to queue for petrol

MrsAvocet · 01/04/2026 18:53

I've just been visiting family in the Highlands and there didn't seem to be any shortage there. I nearly passed out thanks to how much it cost to fill up for the return journey though! Over 185p a litre for diesel and I saw 190p on the motorway.
My DS in Lancashire said he had to try several garages before he could get diesel last weekend, but it was Sunday evening which I imagine is possibly the worst time as lots of people filling up prior to the start of the working week and maybe fuel deliveries haven't been made yet?

LumpyandBumps · 01/04/2026 18:53

I am in East Anglia. Unfortunately needing diesel which seems a bit more scarce. Apart from Tesco, which often runs out, it’s normally possible to get fuel. It’s just very expensive. The price difference between petrol and diesel is now close to 30p per litre.

Silverbirchleaf · 01/04/2026 18:53

Filled up about 4pm. No queues . Kent.

Imisscoffee2021 · 01/04/2026 18:55

I'm near Falkirk and same here, there were loads of social media posts about shortages and people were panic buying I think, filling up their tanks all at once. My local petrol stations have had times they've run out in last few days.

yes I think everyone here can remember Grangemouth problems about 20 years ago now when oil tankers where being blocked from leaving and getting to garages. Can't even remember what it was about. Just remember husbands car being empty and he had to take my 2 seater convertible to site (he was an engineer) with equipment and poles sticking out of the roof.

Thankfully now I have a very sensible low usage car!!

Probably people stocking up for their travelling over the Easter weekend. It will be fine, providing people stop being idiots.
