Fuel stations empty and car queues

I live in a town about 10 miles outside of Edinburgh - population about 70,000.

We have several garages and I just usually go to the local Tesco as it's cheap and convenient. It seems we have no fuel at all now. The asda fuel station had a delivery this afternoon and there was a queue of cars waiting to fill up so I am guessing that will run dry again soon.

I did notice the roads seemed quieter when I was out and about and so i did wonder if people were staying home to save their fuel.

Hard to know if there are actually shortages or if everyone is just panicking.

I have to admit I usually just fill mine when it gets empty but I have been going once a week to top it back up to full at the moment.

What's happening in your local area. I've been checking FifeJammers Facebook and it seems other areas are running out too ie Cupar.

I'm in Derby but went to Birmingham yesterday.
Traffic no different to usual but I called in at the Birmingham Costco for petrol and sat in a queue for 45mins, only to discover that the pump was rejecting my membership card.
Spent 20mins in a queue inside the store to get the problem sorted but they said they couldn't authorise me going straight to the front of the petrol queue, so I'd have to join the back of the queue again.
I was, by this time, running late for a meeting, so decided to leave getting my fuel until tomorrow at the Costco here in Derby. Hopefully the queue will be considerably shorter!

I'm in Vancouver, CAN. Gas was $2.14L this morning and $2.04L this evening. It's pretty close to $8.00/g which is what I saw in the LA news today for California, while i think it's averaging $4.00/g across the States per news a few days ago on CNN. Before the war it was about $1.50/L here.

Not too bad for now. What’s insane is globe buying cheap non essential goods from countries like China still when fuel shortages pending. Like shipping cheap party decorations around half the world is ok yet ration fuel and take the bus to work!?

Edited

Absolutely this. Between the amount of moving non-essential stuff around and panic buying possibly starting to creep in, it's no wonder this is happening.

If it's starting to hit Americans in their precious fuel tanks then good - perhaps that will be the wake up call Trump needs.

My local Sainsbury's just completely closed their forecourt. No diesel this morning and now now petrol either.

I think it depends on area, my local Tesco yesterday had all pumps working and no queues. Diesel was £1.83 a litre and petrol £1.53. Last night I walked past an Esso garage, again all pumps working and no queues although more expensive at £1.90 for diesel and petrol £1.70.

It’s people like you changing your behaviour who are causing localised shortages.

If you usually have half a tank in your car and you are now keeping it topped up that creates excess demand. If enough people do it all the local petrol is sitting in people’s tanks not being used instead of being at the petrol station available to buy.

Yes understood but i cycled past Asda yesterday, Diesel 187.9, 60 minutes later on my return trip, it was 190.9 (there had been no new delivery)

Can hardly blame people for topping up when retailers do this.

Traffic is also as mental as ever, so clearly people have the money to drive about doing trips to garden centres etc.

Went late night shopping at Sainsbury's last night and their petrol station was closed. The other one near Sainsbury's was open but busy with some queuing. These are both on a busy main road with lots of passing traffic. Drove home doing a detour to the local out of town petrol station which had every pump operational with no queue, in fact the forecourt was almost empty. I think a lot of people were probably filling up for weekend trips away or like us for trips out with the DGC next week. Once the kids go back to school a tank of petrol lasts us at least 2 weeks.

Out cycling locally this am. North of Manchester. No queues, all pumps working at the 3 garages I passed (not supermarket ones)

Still long queues in our town today. South Lanarkshire

I think we live in the same place. Asda was completely shut today, Tesco had no unleaded but the extortionate Shell on Halbeath road seemed to have both.

I've got 180 miles worth of petrol but will top up whenever I get the chance.

I love FJL too!

PuttingOutFirewithGasoline · 03/04/2026 22:14

@2dogsandabudgie Some counties are only allowing one price change a day and at a set time

Purpl · 03/04/2026 23:35

non problems in kent seems to go up 10p a week and diesel getting close to £2

You do realise that some people fill their car to brim every week of the year? We don't all live in city centres with public transport. A normal habit isn't stockpiling. Like I have 6 arses to wipe and 3 bathrooms in my house. 6 loo rolls might be a years stockpile for some but it's less than a weeks supply for others.

This pissed me off in covid. The superiority of living off one chicken breast a week. You can't do that with four kids.

And normal supply and demand accounts for those of you with 6 arses. The issue is that those with 2 arses who wfh most days and normally just stick £20 in here and there have filled their tanks, instead, increasing the demand faster than it's supplied.

DrySherry · 04/04/2026 07:38

No petrol at my Sainsbury's again last night. Staff said delivery due first thing today. People already queueing.

ifonly4 · 04/04/2026 08:22

I passed two petrol stations yesterday. Only one van at home, the second where all pumps were in use was 8p more - I think it's because it's the first petrol station people hit as they leave our area, and others around town are off the beaten track.

I live in an area where many businesses still operate on Good Friday and close down on Tuesday instead. I did notice that the roads were quieter than normal - mind you we won't be using the car ourselves, so not the only ones using it a bit less.

Pedallleur · 04/04/2026 11:48

Just been out. Passed numerous garages. All pumps working, no queues. Roads actually seemed a bit quieter

MouldyCandy · 04/04/2026 14:36

It's on my local Facebook that seemingly most of the local petrol stations are closed due to no fuel. South East Scotland near Edinburgh. I drive a hybrid but it's a concern.

Scottsquare · 04/04/2026 21:48

No fuel today in Dundee apparently and very little in Dunfermline.
